BOX OFFICE: DESPICABLE ME 2 Dominates; THE LONE RANGER Saddles Up For Disappointment

Despicable Me 2 has taken the box office by storm, but The Lone Ranger has indeed put itself on course to be one of the most high profile big budget flops of 2013. Read on for the latest numbers for both of the holiday weekend's big releases.

As expected, Despicable Me 2 has dominated the North American box office this weekend with an expected five-day total of at least $140.5 million. Considering it cost only $76 million to produce, you can pretty much guarantee a third instalment will soon be announced, especially as the animated movie took $94.4 million through Friday in 45 international territories. It's now well on its way to grossing $300 million worldwide by the close of business today. It's broken record in many of those locations, often only being beaten by The Avengers and Iron Man 3 for all-time highest openings. Meanwhile, Disney won't be celebrating this weekend as The Lone Ranger has continued to disappoint, taking only $10.6 million on Friday and a paltry $10.5 million yesterday. That puts it on track for a five-day holiday total of $48.5 million; hardly the result the studio wanted for a big budget tentpole starring Johnny Depp. However, the actor is a big draw overseas and it's possible that his popularity may end up helping it. However, for now, it seems as if The Lone Ranger is the third high profile flop of 2013 behind Sony's After Earth and White House Down.

if Lone Ranger ends up with 250 millions worldwide then the sequel is ready to go ... And no doubt it will.

Jerry Blake u are a dumbass. The movie has to make at least $350 million to recuperate from how much Disney spent including advertising. A sequel has to be at least $400 or more.

250 millions wordwide is enough.
You've got yourself that + 150 millions from US and it's done.

I still can't believe they spent $215 million on a western. Why? Oh, Why?

Probably would have been more Unforgiven or True Grit and less Wild Wild West. And if Lone Ranger had been the Star and not Tonto.

With a broken ankle and crutches four inches too small, I managed to drag my ass out of bed to go see the Lone Ranger. It's not something I was looking forward to, but when you're couped up like that - just about anything looks interesting.

It wasn't too bad. I just thought it was much too long. It had a Princess Bride kind of storytelling to it that was charming, and Armie Hammer proved likeable enough. Maybe it was the painkillers, but during a particular scene where a heart is semi-off screen being cut out and eaten by our cannibalistic villain, I had to smirk and wonder - why are people so worried about Disney doing away with violent Marvel characters?

Anyway, I don't think Disney will let the Lone Ranger franchise die. It will probably make less than the last POTC but still enough to produce a sequels. As long as Johny Depp is in for this ...

That's why Disney never won the eventual BoxOffice inspite of PIXAR & Disney animation films blockbuster success, Pirates franchise blockbuster success & MARVEL films massively Blockbuster success!

Cuz mostly their experiment films flop; & they for stupid reason have enormous budget, Prince of Persia, John Carter & Lone Ranger to name a few!

WB atleast makes experimental films work if not hugely successful, hence they're for the last 12-13 year No.1 or No.2 at US & International BoxOffice!

Pacific Rim might not be able to open that big; but given the positive reactions so far; I'm preety sure it'll earn decent in US & will surely earn tons worldwide!
& with Legendary out of WB; sequel is all for WB to earn stuff!
Could be a franchise if people loved it!

You simply dont give a western movie a $250M budget, you dont, you just dont. This could have been somewhat successful if the budget was half of what it was.

Lone Ranger should have been called Tonto. I get Johnny Depp is the bigger name, but why would ANYONE go see a movie called The Lone Ranger when the ads make it clear the Lone Ranger isn't even the most important character? Do I think advertising may have helped? Sure. What would have really helped is a budget that wasn't so insanely high for a movie that seemed to have no scenes to justify the cost. The Lone Ranger should have cost 50 million to make, been a nice simple western and they would have had a franchise.

@JerryBlake
Man POTC 1 costed 140 million$ & earned 300+ US & over 650 WorldWide!
& it was beloved; especially Captain Jack Sparrow!

& now you're saying that 215-250 Million$ LONE RANGER if did 250-300 will guarantee sequel; are u serious?
I mean studio only gets HALF of that film earned at BO worldwide!
Unless it eans 500 Million$; it won't even recove PRODUCTION cost; & marketing cost are still not included!
Plus Johnny Depp is the BIGGEST movie star NOW in MakeUp & Non-US markets!
At the time of Pirates1 he was nobody!

So this is a colossal failure even bigger than JOHN CARTER; cuz that film had NO star!
This one has DEPP, GORE VIRBINSKY & Buckhimer & then HAMMER to a certain degree!

So this is the 1st & last of LONE RANGER & I'm not to happy cuz Im looking forward seeing it just for Depp & HAMMER!

@JonathaNisMagnuM Do you know what the hell you are talking about? It was a Radio show first not TVIt was created by the some guy who created the Green Hornet they are even Related both having the last name Reid. And John Carter was not a shit film it just needed better marketing and should have included Mars in the title.

The Lone Ranger wasnt that bad. I saw it last night, just a lot of scenes needed to be cut out and it was too long. The last twenty minutes is pretty good.

I thought it was strange and off putting for a 'Disney' movie to have a 'whorehouse' and native americans being slaughtered by the military.
