Despite early estimates that Captain America had opened with $65,800,00 making it open almost $100,000 higher than Thor. Boxofficemojo.com has listed the actual openings for this years comicbook fare as totaling:

Domestic Summary-Thor-------X-Men: F C-----Green Lantern---Captain America
Total Wk________$65,723,338____$55,101,604___$53,174,303______$65,058,524

Total Domestic totals are as follows:

Domestic Summary-Thor-----------------X-Men: F C---------Green Lantern--------Captain America
Total Gross______$180,136,188____$144,210,364__$113,920,209_____$72,810,712*

*still in theaters will go higher

While it is possible that Captain America could do more money in the following weeks to pass Thor domestically. Its one foreign debut was a respectable $2.8 million in Italy. That's up 16 percent from the first Iron Man but way off from Thor's $5.6 million. All other foreign markets are expected to follow the same trend.

Worldwide Summary---Thor--------------X-Men: F C---------Green Lantern--------Captain America
Worldwide Gross_____$446,112,713___$347,210,364__$147,220,209___$75,610,712*
Foreign Gross_______$265,976,525___$203,000,000__$33,300,000**____ $2,800,000**

*still in theaters will go higher
**not yet released in all foreign markets

While money is not the only determining factor for a films success as seen in Rottentomatoes.com user ratings Thor comes in second to X-men F C and maybe third with Captain America in second:

Fresh rating----------------Thor-----------------X-Men: F C----Green Lantern---Captain America
____________________77%____________86%___________26%_____________74%*

* not done being reviewed

This rating puts all but Green Lantern as "Fresh" but, reviews are subjective and lets face it ratings do not pay the bills.

If Captain America can get a decent total overseas, all Marvel films can be considered a success. This leaves Green Lantern as the only disappointment of this years superhero releases for DC.

Thor on the other hand has passed Wolverine($179,883,157) domestically even though Wolvie has a bigger fan base. Making Thor Marvel's #8 film domestically and #3 all time non-sequel release and The biggest superhero movie of 2011.

Look for Cap's weekday totals to be higher than Thor, thanks to school being out. (This is seen already as Thor had a bigger Saturday than Cap, yet fell far more on Sunday (which was a School night.)

After that, the question comes down to weekend holds. Here, Thor should have the advantage... one, because people had to wait until the weekend to be free to see it, and two because there was less box office competition for Thor's second week. 3 films launch against Cap's second, and that will divide up the audience.

Either way, we'll need to see how things unfold before giving the final box office crown to either.

Bodwulf: It all depends. Cap did twice the business in Italy as X-men First Class did, yet X-men was only $63m behind Thor internationally. If Cap kept followed that trend, it would make double X-men's total and bring in $400m in foreign take, dwarfing Thor's gross.

It won't, mind you... I just use that as an example to show how you can't extrapolate too much from one weekend in one territory.

Fine Enough, Thor deserves the success that it had. Cap hasn't had a chance to run it's course so I would wait until August before this is official.

While we're on this fun topic, Transformers 3 has now made over $350 million domestically which is about twice what Thor made here and currently the worldwide gross stands at a little over $880 million and this without any screenings in Japan as of yet. At this point I feel that it's close enough to officially declare that the predicted gross of over 900 million dollars has proven to be accurate.

marvel72
marvel72 - 7/25/2011, 6:16 PM
highest grossing cbm of 2011 (transformers 3 not a cbm if you ask me.)

at the moment

1st thor $446,112,713
2nd x-men first class $347,210,364
3rd green hornet $227,817,206
4th green lantern $147,220,209
5th priest $76,583,348
6th dylan dog dead of night $4,583,062

captain america could quite easily do $500,000,000.

as for the order of the best cbm of the year.

1st thor
2nd x-men first class
3rd green hornet
4th green lantern
5th priest
6th dylan dog

haven't seen captain america or cowboys & aliens yet so my list may change.

X-Men: First Class > Thor, CA:TFA, GL, in 2011. This is an objective opinion.

Man, I disagree completely.

Captain America still has a lot of countries to open - also Green Lantern, that will open in many places only in august.

Thor it's gone and X-Men is still making money.

Let's just wait.

@ Ancar X-men is done making any new real money. Cap on the other hand had an awesome 7 million dollar Monday! Still say Cap beats Thor domestic but falls short in the foreign markets.Thor will be bigger overall, But I may have to eat that crow yet!!!

(to me anyways) an interesting note on Thor...

for the last 2 days even though it currently has less screens then XM:FC and GL, it has been pulling in more money the either of them. I almost wonder if people who are checking out Cap are checking out Thor as well?

I am gonna check Box Office Mojo for the rest of the week and keep checking the daily grosses, continue to see how both Cap and Thor are doing.

Tymminator
Tymminator - 7/26/2011, 5:19 PM
To support above observation...

Title Screens 7/24 Sunday 7/25 Monday
Thor 236 $106,412 $58,223
XM:FC 295 $100,774 $55,040
GL 421 $101,108 $51,566
