Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s best-selling sci-fi novel, Klara and the Sun, arrived in theaters last Friday amid overwhelmingly negative reviews (25% on Rotten Tomatoes), and between the critical drubbing and a dismal first week's run at the domestic box office, Sony Pictures has decided to restrict the movie's international rollout.

According to Spanish publication Hobby Consolas (via Collider), Klara and the Sun's planned theatrical release in Spain has been cancelled, and more locations across Europe could follow.

Despite the acclaimed source material and a starry cast featuring Jenna Ortega (Scream), Amy Adams (Man of Steel), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), and Natasha Lyonne (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), the film only managed to take in a reported $701,059 during its first weekend of release in North America. Its current worldwide total is said to be around $1.44 million.

What went wrong? The reviews certainly didn't help, but a recent Deadline report suggests that the project faced an uphill battle from the start.

"We’d heard that the movie sat around for two years with Sony befuddled as to how to release it. We heard rumors about the studio being at odds with Waititi’s 'free jazz' and 'instinctual' auteur stylings on set (those are adjectives used by rival studio executives who adore and have worked with Waititi). Then there were the bloody reviews out of the London Film Festival (The Guardian called Klara and the Sun 'a sentimental mess').

The original ending of the movie described by one source close to the testing was 'a bummer' and more faithful to the book’s ending. Waititi worked with Gabler in reshoots (which occurred in April 2025 with Ortega) to get the ending to a significantly more positive place. We’ve heard myriad reports about the pic’s testing, that the movie with the original ending came in at an 83% positive and, with the revised upbeat ending, went up to 87% positive. Other sources in the know tell us that the test scores were “just fine” and that audiences didn’t buy into the tonality nor did they connect with the characters."

Waititi has helmed several critically acclaimed and very successful films (even the divisive Love and Thunder went on to become the highest-grossing Thor movie), but this definitely represents a career setback. The filmmaker recently revealed that the Star Wars movie he was working on for Disney/Lucasfilm has been shelved.

Have any of you seen Klara and the Sun? Were the critics too harsh, or are you not surprised that the movie is bombing at the box office?

Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro and written and directed by Academy-Award® winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams) and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.

LOL talking about going from Green Lantern supporting role to egotistical and eccentric douchebag director.

Dude had such a hot streak with What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit, but he has completely failed to recapture the magic of those films with his more recent director efforts. This is an M Night Shamalan level falloff.

@MrDandy - hunt for the wilderpeople is an incredible movie, and the breaker uppers is a good time for sure. Haven’t seen some of his other stuff that has been critically praised. I wonder if it’s a matter of poor project selection, him thinking everything needs his “spin” (the Thor movies), or the studios hiring him for his “spin” when it might not be what a project needs. He seems to struggle more with projects that come from existing IP. Personally I’m not a fan of ragnarok either but I admit it had a fresh originality to it that made it stand out from the MCU crowd. I also think he just got hot for a while, and I imagine he probably interviews well, and brings a fun enthusiasm to a project pitch that helps him get projects, so I think studios were eager to put him anywhere they could. If for no other reason, his name had some cache for a while. But I think he kills it when he’s working with an original quirky idea, and I think applying his particular brand of creativity to everything isn’t a good idea.

@MrDandy - What a great run:

- Eagle vs Shark
- Flight of the Conchords
- Boy
- What We Do in the Shadows
- Hunt for the Wilderpeople
- Thor Ragnarok
- JoJo Rabbit
- What We Do in the Shadows TV Show

Basically, everything after his divorce was finalized in 2020 has fallen off.

Someone should look up director output after a first divorce (ex. Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez).

People are sick and tired of the juvenile slapstick that defined James Gunn and Taika Waititi. It is the sign of a poor director that needs to resort to comedy to engage viewers. This should be a glaring sign to Skydance that the James Gunn brand of stupidity in films and TV shows is over and has been for a while. Looking at the success of Lanterns and the Penguin and Batman before it...the character driven and grounded approach always wins.

@Forthas - Both character-driven/grounded and comedic/family drama comic movies can work really well.

I do find Taiki Waititi's films just...too much. Even What We Do in the Shadows and Ragnorok are a tad too unserious. However, they're both still uniquely effective movies and Gunn's Guardians trilogy honest to goodness works- and they are not merely slapstick. As I mentioned they're deliberately family dramas.

Just rewatched every MCU film from Ironman-Deadpool/Wolverine with my 11 year old son (his first time watching most of these!) and so far my son's favorite is Guardians 2 believe it or not. He's naturally a Spider-man fan and Avengers fan like everyone else but Gunn really succeeded with his trilogy just saying.

I have never seen a director go from so humble and full of heart to a snobby twat as quick as he did.

That sucks since I thought the movie looked decent (I haven’t read the book though).

However this and Next Goal Wins makes me think that Taika might need to go back to a movie of the scale of Boy or The Hunt for The Wilderpeople , connect to his roots…

I am a fan of his filmmaker hence I say this as someone who likes his work for the most part but I feel he needs someone to reign him on set even though he has co-writers in almost all his works but we’ll see.

Anyway , Taika is talented and I hope he gets back on his feet creatively after this!!.

Word is his ex-wife was behind a lot of his success. She did a lot of ghost writing for his best early works. Regardless, he's become quite a douche over the years.

Screenings continually prove most audiences don't like negative endings, so more money and time is then spent on changing the endings.

And this has been going on for DECADES. Why they keep allowing these dismal endings to get filmed is mind-boggling.
LenSpiderman
LenSpiderman - 10/30/2026, 2:16 PM
@LSHF - personally I like a bummer ending from time to time, but I’m always reminded of Swordfish where the movie opens with a Tarantino-esque meta dialogue about how formulaic and predictable and unrealistic Hollywood movies are, then the movie proceeds to embody every complaint the dialogue touched on.

@DocSpock - I think you're right. Seems common with most filmmakers. Like most die on the vine after 3-5 decent-good movies. Seems pretty clear that it's hard to continually be a good creator and I think it actually requires a rare breed of person who can process loads of information and emotion on a continuous basis.
