THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Earns So-So B+ CinemaScore But Takes Aim At $130 Million Opening Weekend

Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest Marvel Studios movie to land a somewhat disappointing CinemaScore, leaving it on par with this past May's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Check it out!

Thor: Love and Thunder's CinemaScore has been revealed, and it points to fans being as unsure of what to make of the Marvel Studios movie as critics (on Rotten Tomatoes, the Thor: Ragnarok sequel sits at 67%).

Taika Waititi's trippy MCU return landed a B+ CinemaScore; for context, the only other B+ MCU movies are 2011's Thor and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Eternals, meanwhile, has the lowest rating with a B. Every Marvel Studios movie has scored A- and above, so Phase 4 has definitely been something of a mixed bag.

Of course, it's worth noting that CinemaScore doesn't really count for much and is only based on a very small number of paying moviegoers. Despite that, it's an undeniably interesting result.

"Too silly to take seriously, there’s still a lot to love about Thor: Love and Thunder, but unlike Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unlikely to be a movie you’ll fall in love with," we said in our review earlier this week. "Marvel Studios may be developing a quantity over quality issue."

In related news, Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to have made $70 million on Friday for an opening weekend of $130 million - $140 million. That's an excellent result, and one that would mean it easily beats Thor: Ragnarok's 2017 haul of $122.7 million. Will word of mouth make a difference? We'll find out over the next few weeks.

Check out the CinemaScore reveal below:

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

@Spawnnn - I guess I understand why people have issues with this movie, it's by no means a modern masterpiece, but it was the most fun I've had watching literally anything from Phase 4 (which isn't necessarily high praise considering ive been very disappointed with all the shows and movies thus far). Nothing made me laugh audibly and the action was so so, and there wasn't much of a point to anything, but it was clear to me this was just meant to be like a party. Just fun escapism. I enjoyed it.

I'd say a B or B- is fair.

@Spawnnn - This is gonna drop 70% next week. There's no buzz about it with normies at all. Marvel's been self sabotaging since Endgame and is only gonna keep doubling down on the dumb "humor" and the pandering identity politics which is what's driving a good portion of people away from the movies.

@Feralwookiee - lol you guys made similar comments about Doctor Strange MOM and it’s almost at a billion dollars.

@TheSuperMex - I don't know who "you guys" is, but I didn't make any predictions about DS2. However Doctor Strange DID plummet 67% in its' second week, so whoever predicted that was right.

I am saying however, that Thor will have a huge drop off in week 2 and probably cap off around $700 million worldwide. Outside of NWH phase 4 has been kind of a mess imo.

@Feralwookiee - I found it funny since NWH is probably the worst movie of phase 4 with Black Widow (just the easy fan service was the point of the movie

@TheHumanSpider2 - Lol I know. It's like discussing "politics"; you're never gonna get anywhere. I just feel this will have a BIG drop off in week 2 and I worry that MCU is kind of stumbling around right now with no real direction.

@Feralwookiee - MoM and Eternals had a bad word of mouth, but the reception for this movie is plain terrible.
You can see it on this very site, which usually gives the MCU a pass.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Idk, Eternals got ripped pretty bad too. I know there were the typical defenders on here, but I couldn't even make it through that one for free. Just a dreadful, boring, soulless, dumb movie that felt like it was shadow directed by Zack Snyder.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/9/2022, 1:08 PM
@Feralwookiee - I wont try to defend Eternals, but while bad, it felt like a director tried to make a movie, L&T feels like an AI wrote it and directed just repeating what worked in Ragnarok, but with no soul, no heart, or anyone caring about it (except Christian Bale, the guy played Gorr like it was Hamlet...which pisses me off even more, because most of his scenes got removed).

@TheSuperMex - Wanda becomes paper thin in that film as a character and yet when compared to this film, MoM looks like high art lol.

@Feralwookiee - Please point out the "pandering identity politics" in Love and Thunder please... people like you are going to hate anything that doesn't have a swastika in the logo at this point.

@Neutronbomb - Right. Because anyone who doesn't 100% agree with radical identity politics is literally a Nazi.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I actually enjoyed Eternals for exactly the reason you mentioned regarding Zhao. If you skip the CGI fights, it’s actually a decent to good experience.

L&T was an absolute conceptual mess. Did we actually see Bale battle (slay) one deity after the opening scene??? Everything felt rushed, cheap, and massively unearned in this (with the exception of the stellar ‘Eternity’ ending sequence) and I am a MCU stalwart.

@Feralwookiee - 100% Agree! I watched every reviewer I could think of make Box Office predictions for this a while ago. Every one of them said this would make $1 Billion easy. They were all sure this would beat Doctor Strange 2. Well, it is down over 20% from Doctor Strange 2, and it will not get anywhere near $1B. Marvel is shooting itself in the foot with this overly jokey, identity politics direction the studio is taking! I am a huge Thor fan, but I have no plans to see this movie. It looks like a comedy sketch.

tubradford - 7/10/2022, 5:01 AM
@Neutronbomb - Swastika?? Don't be so absurd and inflammatory! It's plain to see how Disney/Marvel have leaned in completely into woke identity politics. Look at Buzz Lightyear, the controversies around the movie, and star Chris Evans openly wishing people who disagreed with him to die off like dinosaurs. Did we really need a movie with Jane with Thor's powers and Thor as a buffoon? I didn't.

@tubradford - Yeah. It's pretty shocking how cheap the movie looks too. How can you spend $250 million + on a film and have it look like a tv sitcom? I'm not sure what's going on with the MCU's quality control anymore.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/10/2022, 12:29 PM
@SauronthePower - Characters keep refering him as the "god butcher", and he kills one (1) god in the entire movie...as someone said, "Thor and Gorr killed the same numbers of gods in these movie"
