Thor: Love and Thunder's CinemaScore has been revealed, and it points to fans being as unsure of what to make of the Marvel Studios movie as critics (on Rotten Tomatoes, the Thor: Ragnarok sequel sits at 67%).
Taika Waititi's trippy MCU return landed a B+ CinemaScore; for context, the only other B+ MCU movies are 2011's Thor and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Eternals, meanwhile, has the lowest rating with a B. Every Marvel Studios movie has scored A- and above, so Phase 4 has definitely been something of a mixed bag.
Of course, it's worth noting that CinemaScore doesn't really count for much and is only based on a very small number of paying moviegoers. Despite that, it's an undeniably interesting result.
"Too silly to take seriously, there’s still a lot to love about Thor: Love and Thunder, but unlike Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unlikely to be a movie you’ll fall in love with," we said in our review earlier this week. "Marvel Studios may be developing a quantity over quality issue."
In related news, Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to have made $70 million on Friday for an opening weekend of $130 million - $140 million. That's an excellent result, and one that would mean it easily beats Thor: Ragnarok's 2017 haul of $122.7 million. Will word of mouth make a difference? We'll find out over the next few weeks.
Check out the CinemaScore reveal below:
The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.
Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.
