THOR: RAGNAROK Concept Art Gives The God Of Thunder Two Drastic New Looks For His Time On Sakaar

Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park has shared two very different takes on the God of Thunder in Thor: Ragnarok, revealing how he could have looked after finding himself trapped on Sakaar...

Thor: Ragnarok changed Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder forever, and it doesn't feel like an exaggeration to say that filmmaker Taika Waititi saved the character's franchise with his 2017 release. After all, both Thor and Thor: The Dark World received fairly muted responses, and it was clear something needed to be done to inject some life into the iconic hero.

Part of Thor's transformation involved competing in The Grandmaster's arena, and Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park has shared a couple of alternate takes on the hammer-less hero.

As you can see below, one depicts him as being scruffy and a little beaten up - no great surprise considering he was The Grandmaster's prisoner. The other, meanwhile, gives Thor a completely clean-shaven look which you might expect to see from a competitor in an arena like this one.

They're definitely two extremes, and an interesting contrast to what actually ended up on screen.

A part of me would have really liked to have seen more gladiator stuff in the film.

What's so extreme about the first one? A thick beard? Like how a viking god would look? Hell, I look like that on an average day sitting my ass on the sofa.
Give the Asgardians a more medieval, tip your toes in the God of War territory.
The Marvel art team need to step Out of their comfort zone.

@Fares - Actually Taika gave Thor more beard, unlike Whedon that liked Thor with just bristles.

Taika:

Also, the costume was medieval:

based on this:

In fact, Alan Taylos made the costumes look more medieval, compared to Thor 1.

Brannag did a most cosmic and futurist take combined with a shakespearean look (but really looked plastic and power rangerish:

@LoganMjolnir - Say what you want about The Dark World, it ain't great, but the costumes were on point

@Dredd97 - Exactly, the movie is a mess, but Alan Taloy really really knew what he was doing with the artistic direction, just look at Heimdall:

Brannag:

Taylor:

the one from the top fixes more with a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, while the bottom one even matches in a LOTR movie. And overall it's the same design, but the materials and details made all the difference.

Only thing i loved from Brannag, was that Asgard looked that it was in the space as you approach to the bifrost. And of course, overpowered Thor, which we didn't see until IW.

@LoganMjolnir - Branaugh's Asgard was the best. His costumes looked cheap. Taylor took those, and made them look classier. A shame that Asgard is toast now lol
I loved IW Thor.

@LoganMjolnir - Undoubtedly. I liked where The Dark World and Taika were going and I wanted them to go even further.
But then the Infinity War costume Came in and kind of undid that. It's not exactly horrible, but it's not what I was hoping.
