Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, 'ThunderCats' characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new 'ThunderCats' will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

Thanks to the eagle eyed guys over at Bleeding Cool we have our first look at the trailer for the upcoming animated series. Head on over to the site for a series of screencaps from the following footage.

Very skeptic about it. Looks like it's been seriously toned down for the kids. If it's like "Last airbender" kinda action, I'll watch.

I also hate that it's in anime style but this show looks okay. I wish they would've made Lion-O look just as old as Cheetara and Tigra and give him the broad chin he had in the original, but oh well. =[ I will give it a shot. When does it start so I can put it in my schedule? Cuz I will forget.

It looks good and looks like what this generation of kids would get into! Its a great way to keep the franchise alive instead of showing them the original, lets be honest, if most of the kids that watch Cartoonnetwork now watched the original, they wouldn't pay it any attention, besides the anime-ish design is whats 'hip' these days for cartoons.

I don't understand why people have such contempt for the anime style when the original show was done in that style, and since American style animation isn't really better. There are very few American animated cartoons that can stand up to those animated in Asia in the anime style. In fact, ALL the great cartoons of 80's(the golden era [ inlcluding American produced ie. G.I. Joe, ghostbusters, TMNT etc]), the one's a lot of us grew up watching, were animated in Japan, in the anime style. In my opinion when done correctly the style is much better than American animation. I think our style tends to be a bit bland with very odd bulky porportions, and it just looks cheaper. Ben10 being a prime example of this(big chest little legs, very little shadow and highlight representation, very generic). Batman and justice league had awesome storylines, but the animation, to me, was never anything standout. I'll admit there are some cartoons that don't do the style justice, mostly dealing with the Yu-gi-oh/pokeman card cartoon revolution, but for the most part cartoons utilizing elements of anime tend to look better. Avatar was probably the best looking cartoon we've produced in over a decade and that was animated in korea with heavy anime elements. Bottom line, anime influenced=better looking cartoon.

I thought it looked pretty awesome...I was a sceptic at first. I watched and loved the Thundercat's when it was first aired and am in my early 30's so I was a bit cautious about a 're-imagining'. However, I think it is faithful enough to the original aesthetically i.e you can still recognise the major characters.

About the anime style issue; I don't think people realise that the original cartoon was animated in Japan and had a japanese aesthetic, it looked nothing like any other american cartoon (except for the ones made in Japan and sold in the US) so I don't understand this criticism. Compare original T'Cats to He-Man to see what I mean.

And as for the comment on it being dumbed down for kids???? Thundercat's was a kids tv show with some ludicrous story lines, have you seen the show recently? Check it out on youtube, it doesn't date too well...
