TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS Toys Offer New Look At Bumblebee's G1-Inspired Design And Battletrap

The first Transformers: Rise of the Beasts toys have been revealed, and as well as showcasing that new Bumblebee design, we also get a decent look at the movie's newly created Terrorcon, Battletrap...

Regardless of how you feel about the Transformers franchise, each time a new movie is released, that means getting hands-on with even more cool toys! The upcoming Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be no exception, of course, and thanks to Screen Rant (via SFFGazette.com), we have a first look at action figures based on Battletrap and Bumblebee's likenesses.

It goes without saying the latter is an icon, and previously appeared in his own 2018 movie (that laid the groundwork for this reboot by shifting gears from Michael Bay's approach to storytelling).

As for Battletrap, David Sobolov (The Flash) will lend his voice to the character who is newly created for Rise of the Beasts. As part of the Terrorcons, he isn't allied with the Autobots or Decepticons, and looks undeniably badass. The movie's G1 aesthetic is definitely appreciated, and we expect more toys from the movie to be revealed very soon.

The official description notes that "The 6.5" action figure for boys and girls can convert from robot to licensed GMC tow truck mode in 30 steps and comes with a mace accessory that attaches to the figure in both modes."

As for Bumblebee, "The 4.5" action figure for boys and girls can convert from robot to licensed Chevrolet Camaro in 23 steps and comes with the Stinger Blaster and arm blade accessories that attach to Bumblebee in both modes."

Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a '90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new breed of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

As for the cast, that's led by Anthony Ramos, with Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Vélez, and Tobe Nwigwe joining him. Peter Cullen will once again lend his voice to Optimus Prime, while Ron Perlman has stepped in to play Optimus Primal, the leader of the Maximals.

We also recently learned that the movie has added Peter Dinklage (Scourge), Liza Koshy (Arcee), John DiMaggio (Stratosphere), David Sobolov (Rhinox/Battletrap), Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Nightbird), Cristo Fernández (Wheeljack), and Tobe Nwigwe (Reek).

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to be released in theatres on June 9, 2023.

Where does this movie fit in with the others? This a direct sequel, starting it's own thing, or Bumblebee sequel?

@TheGrayGhost - From the trailers, toys, promos, and marketing material, it seems the answer is *shrugs*

@TheGrayGhost - Seems like it's its own thing spawning from the Bumblebee movie. Too many contradictions to fit in with the previous Bayverse films.

@TheGrayGhost - Well, it depends on who you ask at Hasbro and Paramount, and when "Bumblebee" came out the story went back and forth a bit. But I think what's been settled on is that "Bumblebee" is a prequel to Bay's movies that serves as something of a soft reboot (taking place in the 80's) and this new movie is a sequel to "BB" (taking place in the 90's) as evidenced by Prime and BB having the same alt modes in this one that they had at the end of "BB" (well, that's until they get to Peru and go all "jungle mode").

While Travis Knight originally intended "BB" to be a reboot, Hasbro ultimately told him not to directly contradict anything major from Bay's movies, which is why he wasn't allowed to use Megatron in the opening battle sequence on Cybertron in "BB" as Megs would have been frozen on Earth at that time. And also Bay is a producer in "BB" and this new one.

@StSteven - Hasbro still wants to hold on to Bays interpretation? Should’ve just been a straight reboot, allowed by Hasbro.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/7/2022, 3:24 PM
@Arthorious - Yeah, for now anyway. I'm guessing that Hasbro has determined that there's still enough love for Bay's movies that the associated toys were worth doubling down on because a couple of years ago they started their "Studio Series" toy line which are nicer, more detailed new molds of the movie characters (I have most of them, including the box set of Devastator from the RotF movie). What's really cool about this line is that they've since used it for ANY movie characters, including a sub-line.for the 1986 animated movie (with all the characters in the proper scale and colors). The nicer toys for the new movie will be in that line. Plus, they're celebrating the 15 year anniversary of the first movie by releasing a box set of the 5 original Autobots (in new paint jobs), and although I haven't heard anything certain yet I'm expecting them to do the same for the Decepticons.

So that's a long, unnecessarily rambling way of saying that Hasbro isn't backing away from Bay's movies any time soon, but the approach that they're taking, while not a reboot per se, allows them to tell stories and introduce new characters (and the associated toys) that given the time periods that they take place in don't directly contradict Bay's movies, but don't reference them either (so far).

For me, what will be interesting will be what they do when their current series of movies catches up to TF1 date-wise. Right now the new movie takes place in the 90s and TF1 was 2007 so they have the time in between to tell more stories, but what then? On the plus side, being as TFs are millions of years old they can theoretically jump around and tell different stories in different time periods, which could be interesting.

Oh, and I almost forgot: for those who want just a straight-up TF-CGI-no-humans-all-on-Cybertron movie, that's coming as well, I believe in 2024. I haven't heard if/how it will fit in with the current movie timeline, BUT if you liked that opening battle sequence from "BB" it's supposed to about 2 hours of that. And who doesn't want to watch that? 😊

Transformers geek here. (Ahem) Actually Battletrap was a G1 Decepticon Duocon who, along with Flywheels (another Duocon) had robot modes that were made up of two different vehicles that through a spring-loaded action would pop up into robot modes when you combined them. G1 Battletrap:

G1 Flywheels:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftfwiki.net%2Fwiki%2FFlywheels&psig=AOvVaw3h-FhX4ULNyGXnWib0ByWS&ust=1670519222016000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA8QjRxqFwoTCKCq3Zj_5_sCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

Hasbro made new versions these two characters a couple of years ago in the "Power of the Primes" and "WFC: Siege" lines, respectively, however the vehicles that Battletrap separated into actually had their own robot modes whereas the Flywheels one did not (and was named "Skytread presumably for copyright reasons). This Battletrap is probably a case of "different character, same name" as the movies have done in the past (looking at you, Demolisher, you big ugly mess).

Transformers is such a fun IP but somehow Michael Bay made it such a tedious franchise. I loved Bumblebee and was hoping the new continuity would spawn from that but I guess Universal again wants to have another all over the place franchise like the Fast and Furious one.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 12/7/2022, 12:50 PM
@SonOfAGif - which I don’t get, why not just start over with zero ties to the previous films? I’m hoping Gunn does something similar with DC.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/7/2022, 3:32 PM
@SonOfAGif - Actually you can blame Hasbro and Paramount, and my replies to TheGrayGhost and Arthorious above is my understanding why they didn't just straight up reboot the franchise and how "Bumblebee" wasn't exactly a reboot, but more of a "don't directly contradict the Bay movies" prequel with this new movie being sequel to that but still fitting within the Bay movie timeline. It makes sense to me, but then again I kinda eat, sleep, and breathe TF stuff (because yes, IT IS such a fun IP), so I can't exactly gauge how convoluted it might be to the GA.
