THE BOYS Star Karl Urban Calls Wolverine Fan-Casts "Flattering," But Feels He's Too Old For The Role

Many fans feel The Boys star Karl Urban would be a great pick to take over as Wolverine in The MCU, but the actor believes Marvel Studios will almost certainly cast younger...

Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings, Dredd) was often fan-cast as Wolverine before he landed the lead role in Prime Video's The Boys, but the actor's layered turn as the ferocious, charismatic Billy Butcher has placed him right at the top of many Logan fans' wish-lists.

This even led to "rumors" that Urban may have met with Marvel Studios about taking over from Hugh Jackman as the iconic mutant berserker in the MCU, but those reports always seemed suspect.

Urban was asked about the Wolverine fan-casts during an interview with The Guardian, and while he calls the support "flattering," he does outline a slight problem with taking the gig.

“Oh really? It’s flattering, but you have to rationally think about it. I’m what, two years younger than Hugh Jackman? [It is closer to four years.] I mean, if I was a studio looking to cast someone as Wolverine, I’d pick someone I’ll get three films out of. You’re not going to get three films out of Karl Urban unless you want a 65-year-old Wolverine.”

It's true that Kevin Feige and co. will most likely cast a younger (and shorter!) actor to play Wolverine, but it would be a mistake to go too young. After all, Logan has been around for a very long time and probably reached adulthood close to 200 years ago, so he should at least look like he's been through the wars (literally) when we meet him in the present-day.

What do you guys think? Is Karl Urban a good pick to play Wolverine in the MCU? Drop us a comment down below.

He's not too old. He's too tall.

@NitPicker - height means nothing people in marvel movies before Infinity war some are to tall and short compare them to comic book character height in comics peter parker is 5/10 and Tom Holland is 5/8 there are others out there that make to tall and to short list to there comic character counter parts in comics they are playing

@dragon316 - @dragon316 - I understand that actors cannot change their height. In the comics, Wolverine is 5'3". I don't expect Marvel/Disney to cast a 5'3" actor as Wolverine. If they can find a 5'3" actor who looks like Wolverine and can portray the character accurately, then that actor should be cast as Wolverine.

Peter Parker is 5'10". Tom Holland is 5'8". That is close enough.

Wolverine is 5'3". Karl Urban is 6'1". That is NOT close enough. I think an actor who between 5'5" and 5'9" is good. I'm not unreasonable.

In the comics Wolverine is known for being short. In the comics Cyclops (6'3") is known for being taller than wolverine.

If Karl Urban (6'1") is cast as Wolverine, then an actor who is cast a Cyclops would have to be at least 7 feet tall. How many actors do you know of who are 7 feet tall and can portray Cyclops accurately?

@NitPicker - Not this sh1t again. Iron Man in the comics is 6’6” and RDJ played him as 6’1”. You don't hear people b1tching about that. It's BEYOND stupid to complain about the looks of an actor compared to the comics as most of the time the MCU isn't even keeping it canon with the comics. As long as the movies are good and the actor kills it who [frick]n cares. Some of you virgins need to go out and smell some grass man, nitpicking like that is ridiculous.

@NitPicker - I’m with you, the choice doesn’t have to be 5’3” but we don’t need another 6 foot + Wolverine.

Ideally he should be short, hairy and muscular but stocky.

Tough casting, compromises will likely be made, but we don’t need another pretty boy. Wolvie is not necessarily Time Magazines sexiest man alive.

Would love someone with a bit of ethnicity to them, maybe a hint of Eskimo, def not a tall caucasian.

@Typhoon20 - Iron Man is 6'6". Tony Stark (without the armor) is 6'1".

Thor is taller than Captain America. Captain America is taller than Tony Stark.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is taller than Chris Evans (Captain America). Chris Evans (Captain America) is taller than Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark). Why would anyone (including me) complain about this?

Why is my sexual status relevant to this discussion? If I could prove to you that I have had sex once in my life, would you seriously consider any of the comments I have posted thus far?

If I could completely explain to you why the comic book writer who created Wolverine chose to have him be 5'3" inches tall, made him 5'3" tall, would you go to his twitter and tell him he is a virgin and a NitPicker.

If I could explain to you why the movies aren't good, would you immediately dismiss me because I was a virgin.

If someone disagrees with you, does that automatically make them a virgin and/or a nitpicker?

@Typhoon20 - I care. If you're a comic fan of Wolverine, you'd care. His height plays into his character, not to mention the codename.

It's like making Daredvil deaf instead of blind, then saying- "he's handicap, who cares???" The details season the story.

@NitPicker - when the xmen movie came out I remember my buddy enjoying Hugh Jackman but was disappointed he wasn’t shorter and I remember asking why and he told me wolverine was short in the comics which I had no idea. My buddy is short maybe 5’5” so for the first time I actually saw someone with a connection on a comic book character based on who they were.

Since then I’ve have hoped that they cast a short actor for wolverine!

@TheFireForce - Excellent comment. I love it.

Today (May 31, 2022) I was told that I am a virgin because I would not like to see Karl Urbane cast as Wolverine. I think Karl Urbane at 6'1" tall is too tall to be cast as a character who is know to be 5'3" tall.

If Chuck Norris was being considered for the role of T'Challa, I would be opposed to it, mainly because Chuck Norris is doesn't have the appropriate skin tone to be cast as T'Challa.

(I'm a little drunk right now, everybody. Please forgive me for any grammatical error and whatnot.)

I highly doubt anyone would call me a virgin because I was in opposition of Chuck Norris being cast as T'Challa.

@Typhoon20 - dude, Tony stark is not 6'6 in the comics. He's an average sized man. He's 6'6+ in the suit. Wolverine being very short is part of his character. He's not just short, he's abnormally short
NitPicker

@MuadDib - It's ridicuolous.

Today (May 31, 2022) I have been called a virgin because I wouldn't want to see Karl Urban cast as Wolverine in a movie.

I think I have good reasons for not wanting to see Karl Urban cast as Wolverine. But, apparently other people (Typhoon20) think I don't have good reasons.

I don't know how being a virgin has any effect on deciding whether or not an actor can portray a character properly in a movie, but I'm sure Typhoon20 will inform us all on how virginity and movie casting is connected.

Before I go any further, I would like to remind everybody that certain people (Typhoon20) think that the only reason anybody would be opposed to Karl Urban being cast as Wolverine is they never had sex with anyone.

Moving on, certain people really seem to place a lot of stock in the sexual escapades of others when it really has no relevance to the subject. For those who don't understand what I'm talking about, read Typhoon20's comment.

Moving on again, from what I can tell, @MaudDib is not one of those people who cares about the sexual status of a person posting a comment on this site. Based on that, I think MaudDib is a reasonable person and is the type of person I would like out with.

Back to the subject at hand, MaudDib has not been accused of being a virgin, nor do I think he should be, but I haven't visited this site in a long time and like I said, he seems like a reasonable, rational person and as far as I know this is the first comment of his that I have read (people sometimes change their user names) but this first* first comment of his seems reasonable/rational. He wasn't accused of being a virgin though.

I was accused of being a virgin though. Isn't that weird?

@Typhoon20 - any thoughts?
@MaudDib - you seem pretty cool.

How old is too old to play Wolverine? Hugh Jackman was perfect in the sense that he didn't age dramatically in his tenure as the immortal Mutant.
AC1
AC1 - 5/31/2022, 10:24 AM
@MasterMix - Hugh was in his early 30s when he was cast (and in my opinion looked a bit older than that at the time) but then over the 17 years he played Logan he aged very well which is very lucky. I'd definitely rather Marvel cast someone on the older side than younger-looking as is often rumoured with the likes of Taron Egerton and Daniel Radcliffe. Someone who looks like they're pushing 40 would be ideal ala Robert Downey Jr when he was cast as Iron Man.

@GhostDog - don’t mean nothing people playing comic characters in movies now and then are to tall and to short tom holland to short play Spider-Man by two inches there are few people who lived past end game who are to tall by few inches compared to comic character height

My fan pick for either Wolverine or Beast is Edgar Ramírez...

I lean more toward beast for him but whoever he plays would have to be played with a spanish accent.

Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 5/31/2022, 11:26 AM
@Forthas - I thinks it's key for Wolverine that his nationality remains as Canadian, so would be against the spanish accent.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/31/2022, 12:23 PM
@Urubrodi - Not sure I follow.

If a Spanish speaking person immigrated to Canada, they would have a Spanish accent and also their nationality would be Canadian!

OR

A person whose nationality is Canadian could be raised in a Spanish speaking country and therefore speak with a Spanish accent.

I don't see a contradiction. Am I missing something?
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 5/31/2022, 12:26 PM
@Forthas - Yes, there are people Canada that speak spanish, but that has never been the case with Wolverine in any sort of adaptation, I guess at least for me I rather they keep close to the comics with him.

@Urubrodi - dude, these are actors. They can do different accents. You think a Spanish guy can't act like he's Canadian? Wtf 😂
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/31/2022, 3:34 PM
@Urubrodi - wanting wolverine short I can understand. But, you really seem to think a Spanish actor can't adopt a Canadian accent and that's so bizarre to me. It's funny but in a "are you being serious" kinda way. Lol, as if only English and American people can fake accents.

Bizarre
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 5/31/2022, 4:31 PM
@KaioKen - Dude the guy was saying that he wanted the actor to keep his Spanish accent... I know an actor can do different accents, pay attention before calling people out on stuff
Blastaar
Blastaar - 6/1/2022, 10:31 AM
@Forthas - He's ALREADY played Skurge The Executioner, and he's TOO tall and TOO old to play Wolverine. There are WAAAAAAAAAAY too many unknown actors out there that need their BIG break, why keep recycling the SAME actors over and over.....? Beast is a "High-brow" & "Intellectual" type, I don't see Karl Urban pulling that off. Not even Nicholas Hoult pulled this off, however Kelsey Grammer was PERFECT as Beast.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/31/2022, 11:01 AM
Probably Tom Hardy is the best fit for the role...but obviously that would be complicated...
