Earlier this week, a new look at Creature Commandos was revealed thanks to concept art for the upcoming Max series. Now, we have another significant update about the series and it's not a good one.
According to Bobbypills (via Toonado.com), the animation studio working on the show, DC Studios has decided to push the project's planned 2024 premiere to 2025. As the SAG-AFTRA continues with no clear end in sight, Waller is similarly unlikely to be finished in time for a 2024 debut, so it appears the DCU will kick off later than expected.
Next year will still see the release of Joker: Folie à Deux and The Penguin, though both are "Elseworlds" projects. Still, after a disastrous 2023, it's probably for the best that there's as big a gap as possible between the DCEU's conclusion and the beginning of the DCU.
James Gunn has previously said Creature Commandos was unaffected by the Hollywood strikes so we're not sure what's changed.
In other news, all signs point to The Witcher star Anya Chalotra having joined the animated series as classic Wonder Woman villain Circe. In the comics, she's a longtime enemy of both Diana Prince and the Amazons of Paradise Island.
Among her magical powers, the one she's most frequently used stretching back to mythological times is the ability to transform people into animal hybrids known as the Ani-Men.
With a Themiscyira-set live-action TV series on the way, we'd bet that Circe will also appear there, potentially setting her up as a recurring threat in the DCU (and to whoever replaces Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman seeing as her time as the character appears to be over). Chalotra looks the part, anyway, and that's likely because Gunn plans on using the same actors across film, television, animation, and video games.
Creature Commandos stars Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
The show sees Amanda Waller create a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners. Gunn wrote all of the first season's episodes.
