With the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, Stranger Things star David Harbour was one of the first actor's to speak to the press about an upcoming role.
While attending the BoxLunch Holiday Gala, Harbour was asked about the challenges of playing the animated Frakenstein's monster in Creature Commandos and whether he'll also play the character in its live-action DCU appearances.
Said Harbour, "The most interesting thing to me about Frankenstein’s monster in general is that he was created to be this sort of erudite, intellectual, romantic, brilliant person, and he winds up being a monster. I mean, that complexity can make for some pretty ripe comedy and also pathos—that a guy who considers himself one thing, is viewed by others as something very different."
He then went on to share that he loves the ability to move back and forth between live-action and animation.
"That’s the broadest, most mysterious way I can put it, because all I know is the scripts are really good. What we recorded is really great. I’ve seen the art, James is a genius. I think it’s going to be really fun and really exciting, and it opens up a whole new door to the DC Universe of how these characters will occupy the world. I like the concept of a live action and cartoon back and forth."
In terms of how Frankenstein's monster will make the VFX transition from animation to live-action, Harbour stated that he isn't sure if he'll be in a mo-cap suit like the Hulk's Mark Ruffalo or if he'll don prosthetics, like in the ill-fated Hellboy reboot.
"I mean, I don’t know how they do it nowadays. It feels like Mark Ruffalo just puts some dots on his face for the Hulk. But I don’t know how they’ll do it. I’ve worn prosthetics in movies before, I’m definitely down for it. I just love telling great stories that people love. I’m just happy to get back to work."
The animated series will hit Max in 2024 and stars Harbour as Eric Frankenstein/Frankenstein's Monster, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Dr. Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
Steve Agee will also reprise his Peacmaker role of John Economos. Viola Davis is also slated to appear as Amanda Waller.
Additionally, Anya Chalotra who plays Yennefer of Veneberg in The Witcher, is rumored to be portraying Wonder Woman villain, Circe in the project. Keep this casting labeled as a rumor for now as it hasn't been confirmed by Gunn.
Speaking of Gunn, he also set the record straight on the project's release date as it seems the studio animating the TV series thought the show was going to be delayed. Gunn took to X, formerly known as Twitter to state "Yes, Creature Commandos is all set to come out in 2024. There have never been any delays, thank goodness. Any info otherwise is a well-intentioned mistake or misspeaking."
Creature Commandos does not have an exact release date but expect the intriguing animation project to be released at some point in 2024.
