GOTHAM Director Is Working On Making 'Mr. Freeze' A Character In The Show

During an in-depth interview with Hitfix, the director of Fox's Gotham pilot, Danny Cannon, reveals that he's working on "winning" Geoff Johns over to get the icy villain an introduction in a future episode of the show.

Fox's Batman prequel series will introduce quite a few villains from DC Comics canon such as early incarnations of The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman etc, but one character who wouldn't seem to fit in with this more grounded batch of baddies is Mr. Freeze -- still, that's exactly who director Danny Cannon (Judge Dredd is hoping to introduce at some stage! During an interview with Hitfix Cannon is asked what future event would make him want to get back behind the camera again after directing the pilot.

"I have a big pitch with Bruno about the Mr. Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain. If I can win Geoff Johns over and if I can win Bruno over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realized."

Obviously thoughts of a live-action Freeze conjure unwelcome images of Arnold Schwarzenegger being sent to the cooler in Batman And Robin, but there is potential in the character to make a fairly compelling transition from page to screen. Is Gotham the right platform though? Thy are using a young Poison Ivy I guess. There's much more from Cannon at the link below.

Please don't be another Smallville where they introduce literally every major Batman villain before Bruce even becomes Batman.

The main reason I'm not interested in this show is because I just see it as an exercise in yanking fanboy's chains. IF this series were set up as a primer to launch the next 'Batman' phase of the DCCU, I'd give a sh88. In other words, if this were set to be a FINITE, 2 or three season lead-in to BVS or the next Batman solo film, I'd see a point to it.

I'm assuming that with CW's 'The Flash', there WILL be a connection to the DCCU if the upcoming GL/Flash film rumor is true...at least I HOPE so.

What Warner Bros. NEEDS to do at SDCC this year is make a definitive announcement whether or not their numerous TV properties are connected to the DCCU.

Uncertain? I am pretty sure Paul Dini and Bruce Timm defined the crap out of that origin. One of the best cartoon episodes of all-time.

I really want to be excited for this show. I'm like the biggest Batman fan on the planet too and I just don't care about this show happening. I'm actually a little pissed off it's going to exist. Maybe if they somehow tied it to the DCCU I would at the very least be interested but, to me, it's just a Smallville type reimagining. Fingers crossed I guess.

I would have preferred, if they wanted to focus on the GCPD, they could have explored tales from the Gotham police perspective. Make the Batman this shadowy figure that you know is out there but "see" only through his aftermath or brief shadowy cameos.
The way they are doing this is going to obviously mess with the villain mythos. It has always been surmised that because of the Batman's existence AND his dramatic flair that these criminals decided to take their own personas to their costumed levels. That essentially, the Batman CREATED the Gotham "crazies" by just existing. Like Gordon said in Batman Begins, "Escalation".

It's generally assumed that Gotham was ruled by mob bosses before Batman, not the psychopathic villains. Batman's arrival changed all of that.
This show may want to do away with that history with its introduction to all of these villains, and that leaves me very disturbed.

Maybe this show will explore Nora's slow spiral downwards with her disease and Victor's search for a cure BEFORE he became Mr. Freeze.

Dr. Fries would be an excellent addition to the show. So would Hugo Strange. Also a young Tommy Elliot.
TheFox
TheFox - 6/23/2014, 2:35 PM
Well, this is a PREQUEL series about Batman and his villains... so wouldn't it make perfect sense to just introduce Dr. Victor Fries, a research scientist and cryonics engineer with a beautiful wife who's dying of a rare illness? Badda-bing, badda-boom, Mr. Freeze is officially on your show. Just because the villain's concept is weird and sci-fi, it doesn't mean there wasn't a time when he was just a normal guy...

Hell, they could feature Mr. Freeze's origin story in full and it would still work... just figure out a way to keep him ON ICE for thirty years after the accident, like maybe he's in a coma, and voila!

I would like to see this as a finite prologue to the DCCU- or at least skip years between seasons and have it end with the batman as a young vigilante - have a guy that looks like affleck in the finale

None of these villains should exist in any criminal element, Bruce Wayne is a child still, most of them would just be ordinary kids with their parents. To contrive having them in the show as major criminals during their extreme youth is just weak writing, but that's the kind of thing they know the average fanboy gives his cash away to see.

Young Victor Freis should be some teen student at home on a school night.
