GOTHAM: Robin Lord Taylor Teases The First Meeting Between 'Penguin' & 'Riddler'

Well, the men who will eventually become those iconic Batman villains anyway. Find out what the breakout star of Gotham had to say about the first time Oswald Cobblepot and Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) have a little chat, which will happen at some point this season.

In the DC Comics and the likes of the animated series and the '60s TV show etc, Batman's villains team up all the time in an effort to take down the Dark Knight once and for all, but obviously we haven't nearly reached the point that we'd begin to see something like that happen on Fox's Gotham... yet. These Bat-baddies are only starting out, and although Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot is taking more and more steps to becoming the master-villain we know as the Penguin, Cory Michael Smith's Ed Nygma hasn't even emerged as an antagonist at the point we're at in this origin story. While speaking to CBR about what's in store for his character, Taylor reveals that at some point in the remaining season 1 episodes, Nygma and Cobblepot will meet, and it'll be "one of the top three things" he's been a part of in the series.

"Edward Nygma and Oswald finally meet, and it is, hands-down, one of the top three things that we've shot in the whole series. It's one of my favorite scenes, and I'm so excited for more. They're both such oddballs and so different, so differently odd. The dynamics between the two of us is just so fun to play and so different. To have two classic villains come together, I think it's one of the first times it's happened so far in the series. That's what I'm looking forward to."

Could this be the catalyst for Nygma to begin having some more villainous thoughts and set him on the road to becoming the Riddler? More from Taylor at the link below.

The show is great IMO!

Though some day I would love to see either a movie or show actually embrace the supernatural world of Batman. The only movie that has come close was Tim Burtons Batman with the Joker etc...... but beyond that the only thing that has really embraced Batman and all it greatness is the Arkham games!

It's still a little over the top for me with the blossoming Batman mythos while Bruce isn't even a teenager.

I love Cobblepot, and think his presence and role make sense. I don't, however, really feel the same about Nygma (I like the character, but his Riddler-ness is a little too thick at times).

I have come to accept Cat...girl, but her being buddies with Lil' Poison Ivy is too much for me.

It's one thing to make Harvey Bullock Gordon's older partner, but a mentally unstable, coin flipping Harvey Dent at this point takes it too far for me.

Still, I have come to enjoy the show more over the last few episodes. Donal Logue as Bullock is great ("You think you were being careful SO FAR?"). I've started to really like this version of Alfred. Even young Bruce and Selina are kind of growing on me. Still hate Fish, but Falcone is a damn interesting character. And Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin is the star of this show anyways.

Part of me does hope that as they progress, especially into Season 2, they concentrate the show on Gordon and Penguin and their positions on opposing sides of the law. Have Bruce and Alfred as supporting characters with their own subplot, but don't bother with the rest of the pre-villains. The parallel rise to power of both Penguin and Gordon either side of the legal system are interesting enough to carry the show without the gimmicky, watered down villain prototypes, while the growth of Bruce from scared and troubled orphan to someone who's ready to go off and train and start becoming Batman is a huge bonus. Those three tangents alone are enough to carry maybe five high quality seasons of TV.

Having said that, it'd be great (based on how things seem to be going) if Riddler and Penguin actually do end up having good chemistry together. Plus, it'd give Penguin an inside man in the GCPD, so that could be advantageous story-wise, while perhaps delaying the need for him to go full-Riddler. If they can tone down the pre-villains in the show and give them an actual purpose to the series, rather than a villain-of-the-week formula or pointless cameo, then this could be a great series.

Though I'm not a quote "fan" of the show, I can at least buy Nygma's habits. Part of his psychosis is his compulsion revolved around riddles. At times we might find it to be on the nose but it's at least accurate to the character, he just can't help it! lol The only real criticism I can give the portrayal here is his lack of superiority. From what I've seen he doesn't seem all that annoyed by his peers (well except that one time in the autopsy room). And as for Penguin, decent given that it's his early career. Might need to take his ruthlessness up a notch

Robin Lord Taylor was good in his small role in Accepted. Despite what you may think of the trailer, it's actually funny. Even if the plot is exactly like Camp Nowhere.

Of course his character is NOTHING like Penguin. Almost the exact opposite, so his growth as an actor is worth mentioning and the recognition. Jonah Hill is in it and he's now a two-time Oscar nominated actor.

@Kyos Selina occasionally partners with Ivy in the comics.

You know, Riddler could be the season 2 big bad. He starts a series of weird murders, using traps that are flawed, even ineffective. Even getting a scape goat when Gordon gets too close, then deciding to lay low until someone (batman) shows up to challenge him
CrimsonFlash
CrimsonFlash - 1/24/2015, 6:28 PM
I'd be down for a show just titled "penguin". He's by far the best part of the show.

But anyway, this meeting will probably be the start of Edwards turn to the Riddler.

Yes or no, would Mr. Freeze be a good villain for the show in the future?

Personally I think it's far too early. Though perhaps just him as regular Victor, working for Boyle, happy being with his wife, maybe just tease her condition.

Yeah, but they're, you know, kids now. The Waynes haven't even been dead for a year. Bruce and Selina being childhood friends... ooooookay, they can have that one. But does the whole thing really gain much by having them know an already deeply messed up small Ivy at this point? That's turning it a little too much into (pre-)high-school Smallville territory for my personal taste.

I just think the show would be better with an even stronger focus on the mob and corruption angles, and with less obvious mythos foreshadowing when Batman is still at least a decade away. Penguin fits great into all that, elemantary school Ivy less so. But that might just be me, and I still enjoy the show more than I thougt I would. :)

@SymbioteJoker yea that probably would be a better idea, like I said in an earlier Gotham post, certain villains like Ra s Al Ghul(even though he's on Arrow I understand) I can only see Batman fighting. My list would be: Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Hugo Strange, Two Face, and sort of tease The Joker until the show ends, then bring Joker over to a potential Batman tv show-should it ever be made.

@Kyos I enjoy the show (probably more than I should actually) and Lord Taylor is the show's highlight IMO. Even thoughI enjoy the guy who plays Bullock. I do wish they would show Selina more, but whatever.

I think they both fit the role great and their ages are perfect both are in their late 20s which by the time Bruce grows up they'll be in their late 30/early 40s. Both Riddler and Penguin always struck me as somewhat older than Batman so to me its a good fit.

I love the show, the only thing I think they misjudged was how quickly the story would progress. I mean we have Penguin and Riddler on track to becoming who they are and Bruce still seems 5+ years away from bein Bats. Seems like in 5 years the villains would have all become well established. I think Bruce should have been like 2-3 years away and this would make more sense timeline wise for me.
Batman89mk
Batman89mk - 1/25/2015, 10:45 AM
Like this show a lot, but I still can not get past how much older the villains are over Bruce. That has been my biggest issue with this show. By time Bruce is old enough to put on the mantel, the villains will be in a senior home. As for the progress of Oswald that has been played out so well. I think after the pilot set up the Wayne's death, it should have jumped to Bruce at about 16 or so getting ready to train.
