While the episode synopsis keeps the focus on Alex and Maggie's surprise wedding shower, the return of Helen Slater as Eliza Danvers and the introduction of Maggie's father, played by former 24 star Carlos Bernard, it looks like the bulk of the hour will actually follow J'onn and Kara as they head off to Mars.

Details on their mission remain under wraps, but the promo does reveal that they'll reunite with M'gann and also teases an unexpected reunion between father and son.

Watch the new promo for episode three, titled "Far From The Tree," below:

"Far From the Tree" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, DLV) (HDTV)

CARLOS BERNARD ("24") GUEST STARS; HELEN SLATER RETURNS - Eliza (guest star Helen Slater) throws Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) a wedding shower, which causes Maggie to reach out to her estranged father (guest star Carlos Bernard). Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) joins J'onn (David Harewood) on a personal mission. Dermott Downs directed the episode written by Jessica Queller & Derek Simon (#303). Original airdate 10/23/2017.

As Superman’s cousin, Kara Danvers (aka Supergirl) balances her work as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization whose mission is to keep National City – and the Earth – safe from sinister threats. At the DEO, Kara works for J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, and alongside her sister, Alex, and best friend, Winn Schott. Also in Kara’s life are James Olsen, a photo journalist who moonlights as Guardian, a masked vigilante, Lena Luthor, and Mon-El of Daxam, whose planet was ravaged by Krypton’s destruction. In season three, Kara and team will come up against a new threat in the form of DC Worldkiller, Reign.

Tonight's episode was a great concept poorly executed. Plot holes and weak storytelling ruined a possibly great exploration of Kara's fears. Her resolution of her deepest fears after a brief pep talk from Alex was laughable. I know, because I laughed when it happened!

That was possibly the worst child actor in all of reported history. Made William in arrow seem like Leonardo DiCaprio.

Really didn't care about this episode, the next one looks interesting though!
I love MM and everytime he has to deal with martian stuff!

The ONLY thing they're doing right...is how they're taking their time with Reign.
