Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Mehcad Brooks will be departing Supergirl in the first half of the upcoming fifth season. He'll be leaving on his own accord in order to focus on furthering his feature film career and develop a cable series in which he would star in the lead role. He's also in the midst of writing a book.

Brooks has been with the superhero series since its debut in 2015, and his departure now leaves only three original cast members - Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh & David Harewood - as part of the season five cast.

No word yet on how his Jimmy Olsen will be written off, nor is there any information regarding his possible availability for the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover, but showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller are leaving the door open for him to return down the line.

We love Mehcad and we’re sad to see him leave the show as a series regular, but we’re excited for both Mehcad and James Olsen’s future. He’ll always be a part of our Supergirl family and we look forward to James returning to National City at some point to visit his sister and his super friends.

Season three saw Supergirl stop Reign and the other Worldkillers’ threat to humanity and our planet, and in the process, Kara was shocked to find her mother Alura alive and living in a salvaged Argo City that survived the destruction of Krypton. Reconnecting with her past caused Kara to realize that her true home is now here on Earth, where big changes are taking place for her and all of her friends in National City – and also, it appears, for a doppelganger in Russia! Season four promises to be full of surprises, action, adventure and lots of big revelations for Supergirl, Alex, James, J’onn, Lena and Brainy.

Supergirl features:
Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl
Mehcad Brooks as James 'Jimmy' Olsen/Guardian
Chyler Leigh as Alexandra 'Alex' Danvers
Jeremy Jordan as Winslow 'Winn' Schott
David Harewood as J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter
Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor
Jesse Rath as Querl Dox/Brainiac 5
Sam Witwer as Ben Lockwood/Agent Liberty
Nicole Maines as Nia Nal/Dreamer
April Parker Jones as Colonel Haley
David Ajala as Manchester Black
Rhona Mitra as Mercy Graves
Robert Baker as Otis Graves
Erica Durance as Alura Zor-El
Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor

They really didn't know what to do with him once they jumped ship to the CW.

@KingNomarch - yeah him and Melissa didn’t have much chemistry but literally by the end of the first cw episode they threw out that story, then he didn’t get much to do until season 4

The only news about this I dislike is the fact they just made his sister a series regular and I’m not a fan of her

Just started binging Season 4. On episode 8 and both Agent Liberty and Manchester Black are some of the best villains this show has had. Excited for when Lex shows up.

I grew fond of him little by little since S3 and I liked his story in the previous one. I will miss him, hopefully the door remains open for a return down the road just like the possibility is made for Winn now.

My main question is that what will happen now with the Guardian suit? It will just be forgotten or will he maybe pass it down to someone that needs it? I cross fingers that it is Mal Duncan or maybe they can bring back Jim Harper's actor from S1 and set it up. It can also end up just at the DEO.

Godspeed Mehcad. =)

He should’ve been Henry Irons/Steel. And Wynn should’ve been Jimmy Olsen.

@superbigguy32 - Well considering they made him Guardian, they could have just made him Mal Duncan

@superbigguy32 - After the focus on AmerTek in the final 6 and so episodes I really would like to see him being introduced.

@TyrantBossMedia - Me too and I agree, WB has messed up their shared universe so badly. All these unnecessary movies that aren’t connected. We’ve seen solo DC movies before...it’s not that hard to do. Hell, half of us on this site could’ve came up with a better shared universe.

@TyrantBossMedia - They Reign of the Supermen could’ve easily been the 3rd and 4th movies in the Man of Steel. But like many said, they tried to be greedy and catch up with Marvel🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤬
