The writing was on the wall when we learned that James Gunn and Peter Safran had taken over as co-heads of the new DCU, and The CW has now officially announced that popular DC Comics-based drama Superman and Lois will finish up after next year's fourth (and final) season.

We had an inking that the series' next season would likely be its last when it was renewed earlier this year, as, despite its popularity, Superman and Lois is significantly more expensive to produce than most other CW shows.

S&L concluding its run marks the end of an era for the Greg Berlanti-produced Arrowverse, or CWverse, that began with Arrow back in 2012.

“Over the last three seasons, Superman & Lois redefined both the superhero genre and family drama as Tyler, Elizabeth and the entire cast effortlessly portrayed these classic characters with new layers of depth and complexity that had never before been explored in the Superman universe,” said Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW. “We are grateful for the years of hard work and graceful storytelling from the show’s writers, producers, actors and crew, as well as our terrific partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions. As Superman embarks on his final flight, the team is leaving us with an absolutely epic 10-episode must-watch-every-minute farewell to one of the most legendary CW families ever.”

“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of season four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created — on and off screen,” added executive producers and co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher. “We’d like to thank our partners at Berlanti Productions, DC, WB and The CW for their endless support and enthusiasm during this journey…and give a very special thank you to all the fans for tuning in. We’re thrilled about what we have in store in our final season, and can’t wait for everyone to watch as Superman, Lois and all our heroes face off against the biggest threat in the show’s history — Lex Luthor.”

Only four of the 12 Season 3 series regulars, Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Bishop and Alex Garfin, are coming back for Season 4.

@supermanrex - Pretty much. What the hell is then the point of that "DC Elseworlds" label that he officiated back in January then? That works perfectly and precisely for shows like this. Heck, for literally everything that was unfairly canceled.

Hello Stargirl while we're at it and I could keep going.

Using Elseworlds for a possible Clayface movie by Mike Flanagan or that rumored Scarecrow flick or for a Keanu-Constantine sequel etc instead of these ones is dumbass.

I watched the first season and some of the second and what I saw I thought was pretty good.

I'll copy paste what I said somewhere else, warning it's kinda long.

One of the few times I can dare myself to say that it was written on the wall. Especially after last week it was reported that even writers that worked on the show were being let go. But honestly this show, like with a multitude of other projects, can and could still exist under their DC Elseworlds label as "Elseworlds tales", that's the point for it and how DC live-action has always sustained itself since forever.

Setting my own pesonal feelings aside of how they backstabbed the fandom by making everyone believe for 2 years it was connected to the main verse that helped them get the show, I feel bad for the reminder of the cast. Especially Alex Garfin and Michael Bishop who was the newcomer as Jon. They were always good as well as the rest of actors that were "let go".

So what was the point in negotiating till the last second months ago to keep the show on by slashing the budget so much that they would let go of half of the entire cast and even the writers (8 down to just 5) if they were gonna do this with the one and only remaining superhero series that actually gives them this little and forgettable pivotal thing that is necessary for TV shows called ratings? Because it's not like all the half-hour acquired Canadian/UK comedies and realities + golf is actually making the network "profitable" as they claimed they would. The new CW President (pfft) said now the show was like "sensitive profitable" for them to keep producing so wtf as all that about?

So either these dipshits of Nexstar lied (it's their MO as greedy suits so not surprised) or Superman & Lois is likely one of the casualties of the SAG-AFTRA ongoing strikes and proof that the warning (which was more like a thread) the studios CEOs gave them last week of how some shows having to end if they didn't reach a deal soon was very serious. Because if so then damn, that's another reason to say "[frick] you" to Zaslav and his WBD regime which is totally fine by me.

Godspeed to everyone and hopefully they use well their slashed budget creatively and sensitively. Bitsie Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin have been killing it as Lois and Clark the last 5/6 years (and the latter since 2016) and they're gonna be very but very hard to top when it comes to playing the parenthood phase of these characters. Matching their chemistry won't be easy at all. They made their mark and it's a very damn good one.

Up up and away!

I'm not overly surprised, unfortunately, that this is happening. I was hoping it would make it to 5 seasons, but I'm just happy that we got a 4th season for them to wrap everything up. Perhaps I'll have to rewatch the first 3 seasons.

Its definitely the end of an era, and it'll be a sad day when the credits roll on the final episode (for me, kind of like when SHIELD and Arrow ended). Hell, this is the last comic book show I think that I watch that debuts on an actual TV channel still. This is the true end of the Arrowverse, and the end of a journey that pre-dates this show to when Tyler's Clark first debuted in Supergirl s2 all those years ago.

Superman & Lois has been one of the best comic book shows, period, and its certainly been the best superhero show of the past few years since it debuted. Best on-screen portrayal of Supes/Clark and his family/allies, too. Season 3 ended on such a high note, can't wait to see the excellence that we have in store for us the rest of this journey.

I was originally hoping for 5 seasons in total, but ill take 4

better for them to get a heads up with time to write a proper end, than to have to jerry rig an ending during production like Black lightning obviously had to do or worst end on a cliffhanger like legends of tomorrow or run out its welcome like flash and supergirl

Now how could it end.

At one point id say go All Star Superman, maybe spend the last few episodes after his death, with the kents trying to figure out what they woudld do now. Maybe end with Jordan taking up the mantle and have a call back to the "Thanks my mom made it for me" scene.

But them having just done Doomsday and them only having 10 more episodes, yeah, doesn't feel like they would have enough time to do All Star Superman justice

id say you would need 12 episodes for the All Star stuff and 2 or 3 episodes of post his death

Could see the season starting off with Clark having disapeared after taking Doomsday to space, they think he is dead and maybe jordan steps up. before Clark returns, but what comes after, who knows.

HeavyMetal4Life - 11/2/2023, 8:13 PM
@dracula - I'd prefer they don't permanently kill him off. I think your last comment is likely what will happen, with Clark disappearing/dying for a few episodes after the Doomsday fight before returning.

@dracula - given its the final season, i could see them doing all star superman and having jordan take over the role at the end. I wonder if they will decide to tease jonathons powers or just leave him powerless for the rest of it.

Sigh….

Given all the cuts this season , this was an inevitability but still sad to see it go regardless.

This show is so close to my heart and revitalized my love for the character and his work so for I give them a big thanks!!.

It’s gonna be a bit until I can deal with next season being the last but I’m glad they atleast get to end it knowing it’s the final one and not having the show run it’s course like some others imo.

I wish we got it for longer and that it wasn’t being cut short but as the saying goes…

It is what iit is so much love to the entire cast & crew of Superman & Lois for giving us such a good show , here’s to a well done & satisfying end!!.

Bummer. Loved this interpretation. I hope these actors are able to reprise their roles at some point. Tyler Hoechlin is one of the best Superman portrayals in all of history of the property. Looking forward to season 4.

Honestly, this show ended for me after season 2. That seemed like a good finale. And i tried to like the new Jonathan but i just cant vibe with him, because to me this show WAS about the boys future and their chemistry navigating being the children of Superman, and without OG Jon its just not the same show for me. They tried, and i had no idea he was that important to the flow of the show, but he was.

I couldnt get through season 3, and likely wont tune in for this. I didnt even come back for the Flash finale, and if bringing Amell back didnt get me to come back, i think my days with the CW verse is already dead.

Who am i kidding, to me this universe ended when Arrow ended with Crisis.

I'm feeling bold right now so I'll just say both Nexstar and WBD/Gunn will regret doing this one day. Cutting off a show like this one after slashing so much of it's budget and not using the Elseworlds avenue to keep active some variety of DC live-action content for those that want something different than just DCU. Mark my words. If DC Comics can have books like World's Finest (and also one for Teen Titans) taking place in the past and other stuff nowadays at the same time as current mainline comics, then so can DCTV with these type of projects.

And I agree that Tyler is the best Superman today. You've got your work cut out for you David Corensweat, break a leg.

Four seasons is the sweet spot for an amount of seasons imo, so I don't mind it at all. Doesn't drag on too much, opportunity to go out on a high note, and even know it is gonna be your last. Good ending to a solid universe
