The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Jonathan Hyde and Richard Sammel have joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro's small screen adaptation of his and Chuck Hogan's vampire novel trilogy, The Strain. According to the site, Hyde will play, "Eldritch Palmer, an elderly tycoon who's the third-richest man in the world who has been an invalid since childhood. Though his life-long fight against his frail body, he's developed a relentless drive to attain immortality by any means necessary." Sammel, meanwhile, "will play Thomas Eichorst, a mysterious figure from Professor Abraham Setrakian's past whose re-emergence in New York is not a coincidence." The series has a pilot order (which will be helmed by the Pacific Rim director) but is being eyed for a full 13-episode pickup according to various outlets. What do you think of the cast so far?

I must be out of the loop, cause this is the first I'm hearing about this show...

@DrDoom - Between him and J. J. Abrams, other directors in Hollywood will be out of work within a few years.

Is this the one that makes vampires back into fricking vampires? Because I miss deadly vampires. Not whining ones.

I love this. I trust GDT. FX has a great track record for solid original series (The Shield, Nip Tuck, Justified, The Americans, AHS). Corey Stoll is awesome on House of Cards. Fingers crossed this will meet expectations.

These are viral vampires. Monsters. Freaky as [frick] vampires.

Excellent casting!

Any thoughts as to who should play the Master/Sardu?

I liked the books. But didn't love them. I imagined it would make for a pretty cheesy movie and even cheesier tv show

I like the rest of the cast and I love Corey Stoll but I think he was mis-cast in the show. He doesn't seem to fit the description of Dr. Goodweather at all as far as how he was described in the books. I pictured someone similar in look to Joe Manganiello (not as buff) or Dougray Scott (who's really awesome in Hemlock Grove). I wonder who will play "The Master" and who will play Goodweather's ex-wife and son? I loved the books and am looking forward to see how Guillermo interprets his own co-written books. Reallly excited that this is going to be a series!

Even money says Ron Perlman will play the Master.

@Rex: good call. He's a regular pick for GDT but my own personal pick would be Doug Jones. Although he's probably way too skinny

Love these books! For anyone curious if these ate scary ad shit vamps or twilight-ish, rest assured, they're the mean as hell Salems Lot type, on steroids. While reading the books though, I couldn't help but be reminded of The Reaper vamps from Blade II.
