HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Comes Under Fire For What Some Fans Deem An Unwatchable, Overly Dark Episode

Sunday's episode of House of the Dragon is proving to be the most divisive chapter yet, but not due to what's happening in Westeros. Instead, fans are complaining the action on screen was too dark to see!

During Game of Thrones' divisive final season, one common complaint among viewers was that it was just too dark to see what was going on. That was frequently the case in battle scenes, with "The Long Night" in some ways ruined by the fact that it was a near-impossible challenge to figure out what was happening on screen.

This past Sunday's episode of House of the Dragon faced similar criticisms, perhaps no great surprise when it too was helmed by "The Long Night" director Miguel Sapochnik!

Fans took to Twitter to share their frustrations, only to be perplexed when HBO's social media accounts defended the scenes. "We appreciate you reaching out about a night scene in ‘House of the Dragon’ Episode 7 appearing dark on your screen," the cable network's account responded when one viewer demanded "a written apology for literally a whole episode of black screen."

"The dimmed lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision," HBO concluded, confirming that the overly dark scenes weren't a result of some sort of technical error.

The episode has been described as unwatchable by some, with others recommending that it's best watched in a dark room with all the drapes closed. Others don't seem to have had the same problem, but it's still surprising HBO didn't take that Game of Thrones feedback on board. This may be the director's creative vision, but that's really not overly helpful when no one can tell what's going on.

Regardless, if you're able to dial up the brightness, it's probably a good idea. We don't anticipate HBO making any changes to the episode following this backlash, though do hope it won't continue to be an issue throughout the remainder of what has otherwise been a very good season.

House of the Dragon continues this Sunday on HBO.

I find it hilarious that Variety (and now Josh who has plaigerized them), is basing their article on a tweet that at the time they published, had exactly two responses.

@thewanderer - I read this tweet yesterday morning and there were a ton of responses saying they couldn't see what was happening to do it being too dark.

@WarMonkey - it does now. At the time Variety posted their article, it had 2 responses. It's only getting any traction at all because 1 of those 2 responses were from HBO Max Help.

@thewanderer - OH, Variety is not a good source of information for those that want info about the real world so I just dismissed the fact they were mentioned here as reporting it without thinking about it. You're right lol

The fact that it was dark didn't bother me....it was the terrible day for night.

@Vision85 - Exactly, I've been waiting for someone to make this distinction. The episode was clearly filmed during the day (in fact I feel like the scene on the beach was one of the early leaks from filming and it was definitely the middle of the day) and simply darkened in editing to make it appear as some weird pseudo-night/perpetual dusk situation. When shows are actually filmed in the dark, they use lighting to light the scene which makes the action clearer. My wife and I were trying to figure out what was going on and it wasn't until we noticed that there were torches lit that we realized it was supposed to be nighttime.

I had no issue seeing the action but it was an uncomfortable experience. It felt like someone turned the brightness down on my tv or when you're watching/reading something on your phone and your device dims before turning off altogether.

@Cu4ttro - As much as they want to frame this as a "creative" choice, I think they either couldn't secure filming rights at night at their location, or realized in editing that the day time setting didn't match the tone of the episode and decided to just lower the brightness of the scenes to make it "night".

Yeah I don't know what to say either.

I remember the complaints from season 8 and, yes it was dark but I could could see pretty well.
It was supposed to be dark with the dead army attacking in pitch black night and only the torches and fires from Winterfell to light the landscape. A second viewing actually made me appreciate the filming aspect of all the action that took place in that episode.

I thought it was just fine. The torches being dimmed was a little unnatural. You would expect some light bleed onto other surfaces but you couldn't see that with the effect they applied.

As far as the Battle of Winterfell goes, it was scary as shit BECAUSE you couldn't see. I've watched a few times after airing and was still as impactful.

Didn't look good on my screen. And I unfortunately can't calibrate my screen.

Shouldn't the baseline quality be serviceable for all screens, with room for improvement on better screens?

That's how 99% of the visual media I watch seems to be made. That's how the past episodes were. So why should this episode be an exception?

Stop buying shitty TVs. If you do buy a shitty tv, don’t cry about your viewing quality.

@WarMonkey - There are smaller TVs people can buy for "cheap" that are still good. Everyone (even the poors) thinks they need a 75" TV. If people cant afford a TV that big that is good enough to watch dark scenes, then they should buy a smaller TV.

@WarMonkey - lmao my guy, I’ve traveled to many combat zones protecting high profile clients. Now I just do celebrities. I’ll say that to anyone’s face. Especially since I’m always armed lol. Lol so yeah people in general, especially poor people don’t scare me.

This reminds me of the Xbox series x vs. Xbox series s argument
Do you design games that work for both consoles, despite handicapping the better console?

Or do you design for the better console and downscale for the weaker.
My LG OLED TV displayed the blacks and contrast levels just fine. It was a noticeable improvement from the long night episode years ago. I can see if I was watching with my Samsung upstairs it'd be a dark grey mess

F everyone saying people should go out and buy a new expensive tv just to watch an episode!!! This director and company made the same decision and got the same reaction as last time. Demanding people buy a new tv or shut-up is a shitty way to treat other people that just wanted to watch a show with dragons.

It was dark because it took place at night. Duh.
But the night for day effect was pretty bad. Big stark shadows on the ground, and you could see the Targaryen white hair were brightly glowing on the top.

I was not bothered by it (though the scenes were clearly shot in day time but made to look dark) and I don't think it was that big of a deal.

These articles just exaggerate everything.

Lol people just love to complain. I have literally no idea what scene people are talking about here, watched it and didn’t notice a thing.
