WandaVision introduced us to the MCU's take on Agatha Harkness, with Kathryn Hahn's villainous witch going undercover in Westview as "Agnes" in a bid to steal the Scarlet Witch's powers. Her plan ultimately failed and Agatha was left trapped in the mind of her sitcom counterpart.
We'll return to Westview in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, but should we expect more catchy songs? Hahn has previously suggested that might be the case but Patti LuPone just confirmed that in a surprisingly spoiler-filled chat with The Hollywood Reporter.
"We are a coven led by the great Kathryn Hahn. I am a 450-year-old Sicilian witch and my power is divination," LuPone said after previously revealing she's been cast as Lilia Calderu. Asked if the witches sing, the actress responded, "They do. Our lead singer is Kathryn. I’m singing backup, and the songs have been written by Kristen and Bobby Lopez."
"I said, 'Listen, I don’t harmonize. I’ve always been a soprano. I’ve always been on the top line.' But it’s just been great fun," LuPone continued. "There’s no CGI either. What I am seeing on this show is craft."
It's surprising to see someone working on an MCU project spill the beans like this, though we're guessing the Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, and Grammy Awards multi-time winner either isn't bothered or will soon be getting a call from Marvel Studios!
As enlightening as these comments are, we're still very much in the dark about what to expect from Agatha: Coven of Chaos, though the show featuring musical numbers suggests it will be every bit as offbeat as WandaVision.
The supporting cast will feature a number of familiar faces from that series, including Emma Caulfield Ford (Sarah Proctor), Debra Jo Rupp (Sharon Davis), David Payton (John Collins), David Lengel (Harold Proctor), Asif Ali (Abilash Tandon), Amos Glick (Dennis), Brian Brightman (Sheriff Miller), and Kate Forbes (Evanora Harkness).
New additions include Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Maria Dizzia.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos is currently expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in late 2023 or, more likely, early 2024.
