ARMOR WARS Starts Taking Shape As IRON MAN 2 Star Sam Rockwell Is Rumored To Be In Talks For MCU Return

It appears the long-delayed Armor Wars movie is finally taking shape at Marvel Studios as we have an update on when cameras will begin rolling and news on Iron Man 2 star Sam Rockwell's involvement...

We're kicking off 2024 with a long-awaited Armor Wars update. The project has been in the works for what feels like an eternity, but scooper Daniel Richtman is claiming today that the plan now is for Marvel Studios to find a director in the first quarter of this year.

The idea from there is to get cameras rolling in 2025, presumably putting the movie on track for a 2026/2027 release.

It's also said that Iron Man 2 star Sam Rockwell is in talks to reprise his role as Justin Hammer. We have no details beyond that but have to believe he'd likely be an antagonist given his history with the Armored Avenger (it's worth remembering he was also War Machine's creator).

Rockwell has said on several occasions that he would be open to returning as Hammer and did so as recently as last month in an episode of What If...? There, he played a Variant of the villain who invaded Avengers Tower on Christmas Eve, donning the Hulkbuster armour to battle Happy "The Freak" Hogan.

Asked last year whether he'd like to be part of a project such as Thunderbolts, he responded, "Yeah, definitely. I would be into that. [Thunderbolts] sounds cool...[Hammer's] fun, he's a real Lex Luthor."

We're not anticipating seeing him in that movie, but putting the spotlight on Hammer in Armor Wars makes all the sense in the world after his attempts to usurp Tony Stark back in 2010. When we last saw the Earth-616 version of the character, he was serving time behind bars in the All Hail the King One-Shot.

In November 2022, Armor Wars producer Nate Moore explained why the project became a movie after originally being announced as a Disney+ TV series.

"I mean in that case, there were some great ideas that were coming out for that show, but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show. Kind of conceptually, and from...you know, our Disney+ shows are awesome, and we love them, but the budgets are not the same as the features, that’s no secret."

"And when you’re talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors and, you know, Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors and sort of the legacy of Tony Stark, that became kind of cost prohibitive to do as a show."

"And we realized as a feature, not only can we get into some of the beautiful imagery that is from publishing, and there’s certainly an Armor Wars run, but also there’s ways then to leverage the ideas of that movie and affect other movies down the line."

Yassir Lester is penning Armor Wars' screenplay, with Don Cheadle confirmed to star as War Machine after we learned in Secret Invasion that he's seemingly been held captive by the Skrulls since Captain America: Civil War. Dominique Thorne is also expected to return as Riri Williams after starring in Ironheart

The movie doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.

If true then I dig it!!.

A story of Rhodey dealing with likely the fallout of being taken by the Skrulls and also trying to defend his best friends legacy from Hammer sounds real cool on paper.

I can imagine Justin Hammer as The Benefactor. After the events of Iron Man 2, Hammer disappeared and he became a black market man. The Benefactor. Sharon Carter can get him Stark technology requisitioned by President Ross's government and some very special armor.

Can we just hive the young Avengers characters off from the main MCU as they just ruin pretty much every scene they are in with the childish humour they are blessed with from Disney and the writers?

@Spike101 - If the issue is the writing, then why not wish for better writing for those talented young actors?

@ClintThaHamster - fair point, I’d go for better writing

Armour Wars without Tony Stark

This could be great if they drop Ironheart because she isn't popular, so stop pretending she is.

Add characters like...

War Machine
Crimson Dynamo
Titanium Man
Justin Hammer
Machine Man
Iron Patriot

@marvel72 - I love people pretending that the Iron Man movies were some high point in the MCU, then bash other underwritten characters who are coincidentally not white men. Your cards might be showing buddy.

@UncleHarm1 - The first movie is great, Civil War and the four Avengers movies were good as well.

As for Ironheart no one reads her comic and she wasn't exactly the most the highlight from Wakanda Forever, if anything she's more annoying than Shuri.

This rumor has been around for a while too. At the end of the senate hearing in Iron Man 2, Tony mockingly says most countries are 5 to 10 years away from replicating his tech, Hammer is 20 years away. Throw in the 5-year blip and the movie is right in that 20 years away timeframe.

Armor Wars with no Tony Stark is stupid and will fail as bad as Captain America with no Steve Rogers is going to fail.

And if Josh Wilding keeps harping on Rhodey at least use the Rhodey War Machine armor for your thumbnail, that picture is Stark’s original War Machine armor that he used. Well all the War Machine armors are technically his

I actually wouldn’t mind if they made Hammer the Norman Osborn of the MCU and had him fill in for Norman in any non-spiderman centric stories like Thunderbolts, H.A.M.M.E.R.(I mean like come on do you need it spelled out for you any more than that) and Dark Avengers.

Give him sort of an antihero role in Armor Wars and really let him do some cool heroic shit then have him go heel in future movies

Sam Rockwell deserves better.
He should be getting all the big roles. One of the most underrated and underappreciated actors of all time no doubt.

Armor Wars without Tony is stupid but I love War Machine. Why cant we at least give him his own movie? Why shit it up with Ironheart?

The MCU's decline mirrors the decline of The Walking Dead. And each were finished when they lost their popular cast/characters and popular lead actor.

It's over for the MCU just as it was over for The Walking Dead.
