DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN "Days Away" From Resuming Production; Episode Count Not Finalized

Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio has confirmed that the series is set to resume shooting very soon, but it sounds like the Disney+ revival may no longer run for 18 epsiodes...

When Daredevil: Born Again was first announced at Comic-Con almost two years ago, Kevin Feige revealed that the show would run for an unprecedented (for a Disney+ MCU series, at least) 18 episodes, but a lot has changed since then!

In the midst of a major creative overhaul, it seems quite a few things are still in flux, including the episode count.

A recent rumor claimed that the show would likely run for 9 (possibly 6) episodes before taking a mid-season break, and while this has yet to be confirmed, Vincent D'Onofrio has admitted that nothing has been finalized just yet.

"The amount of episodes keeps fluctuating, so I don't really know the number that we're at right now. But it seems like there are a few shows that could work with more episodes, then some that just need eight or 10 or six. Echo is like five," the Kingpin actor tells ComicBook.com.

"I think this show could definitely work with more episodes, and I know that Charlie is, and I am too, happy to do that. But the number keeps fluctuating. I think you're gonna have to wait for an official announcement, because I don't want to say a number that we're going to do because I'm not even quite sure what it is."

We may not have long to wait for that announcement, because D'Onofrio also confirmed that production is set to resume a "few days" from now after a lengthy strikes-related hiatus.

Shortly after the strikes were resolved, we learned that Marvel execs reviewed some footage from the show while filming was paused, and decided that a "significant creative reboot" was in order. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, along with directors for the remaining episodes, were let go, and Kevin Feige is said to have signed-off on a pretty major course-change.

Last we heard, The Punisher writer Dario Scardapane had come aboard as the project's new showrunner, with Moon Knight helmers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on directing duties.

Born Again will see the Man Without Fear (Charlie Cox) face-off against his old nemesis Wilson Fisk (D'Onofrio), with Jon Bernthal also set to return as Frank Castle. Initially, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll were not going to be a part of the series, but after the revamp, it seems they will reprise their respective roles as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page after all.

The upcoming Disney+ series doesn't have an official release date yet.

Make it the Better Call Saul of the MCU

@WhatIfRickJames - that already exists. It's called she hulk 🤣

No joke, someone legit recommended she hulk to better call Saul. It's like if someone liked Oppenheimer and being like "well if you liked that you'd probably like this random skit from twkuk"

I think we all know pretty well what born again is going to be like, especially with the netflix comparison

With Daredevil being seen as (mostly) canon now, I kinda hope they just make this a season 4 of that show. Including a 13 episode count and the sane writing team.

But that's probably wishful thinking. I do think 18 episodes is too many though, even with a mid-season break. Think 10-13 episodes is a nice amount, so two batches of six like Loki could work I guess

@bkmeijer1 - 18 episodes feels too much like Network TV, which always had too long of seasons and too many filler episodes.

10-13 is the perfect season length for a show.

JDL - 1/18/2024, 5:45 PM
@mountainman - It was 2 sets of 9.

@mountainman - Although I agree 18 in one go can at times feel too much, split into two batches of 9, released a year apart as this was supposed to be according to multiple prior articles shouldn't be an issue (as long as after reshooting etc the end result is good obviously).
mountainman
mountainman - 1/18/2024, 11:23 PM
@Apophis71 - That just feels like 2 seasons of 9 episodes each to me.

@mountainman - Is that a problem ?
mountainman
mountainman - 1/18/2024, 11:56 PM
@JDL - If it’s written like two distinct seasons with individual arcs and conclusions it won’t be. If it’s written like most shows with longer episode count seasons it certainly could be filled with filler episodes.

bkmeijer1 - 1/19/2024, 2:25 AM
@mountainman - that's my worry too. If it's split in two distinct parts, I could see it work though. Kinda like why I already mentioned Loki. Worked there too
mountainman
mountainman - 1/19/2024, 7:29 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah at least they called Loki 2 seasons.

My fear would be a split up 18 episode season with a cliffhanger in between.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/19/2024, 8:16 AM
@mountainman - feels like every show with 10 episodes or less these days ends on a cliffhanger, and it's getting really tiring. I'm hoping that, if Daredevil is split in too, they pull that trick on us
JDL
JDL - 1/19/2024, 4:49 PM
@mountainman - Yeah. An 18 episode season with a cliffhanger in between would be a bad idea.

Actually get someone who knows courtroom lawyer shit (Unlike She-Hulk)

Actually be TV-MA,be violent like the Netflix show (Unlike Echo)

Actually have Daredevil in it for more than 6 minutes (Unlike Moon Knight)

@marvel72 - I can guarantee none of the above will be true.

Ffs, the original version of this show didn't have daredevil in costume until episode 4.
mountainman
mountainman - 1/18/2024, 5:25 PM
@Origame - That was an origin. In almost all origins, the hero doesn’t become their alter ego until well into it, sometimes at the finale.

It made sense in DD S1. It would be a bad idea here.

It would seem silly to issue an episode count until they have completed the editing. These shows can be as long/short as they need to be.

I think 8-10 episodes at 45 minutes each episode, equivalent to about 3 theatrical movies per season or (360-400 minutes) should be the standard.
