FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER: Possible Plot Details May Confirm Isaiah Bradley's Role And More

Some new details relating to the plot of Marvel and Disney+'s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier would seem to confirm that the "black Captain America" Isaiah Bradley will indeed factor into the story...

By MarkCassidy - Feb 20, 2020 08:02 AM EST
We recently found out that Supergirl and Doctor Sleep actor Carl Lumbly had joined the cast of Disney+'s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and while his character wasn't named, the report strongly hinted that he'd be playing Isaiah Bradley.

Now, /Film has weighed in with what they've heard about the show, and if accurate, it confirms Bradley's role while also giving us a much better idea of what to expect when it comes to the overall plot.

According to their sources, the show will deal with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson initially declining the mantle of Captain America, "but ultimately changing his mind after discovering the secret history of the super-soldier program by encountering Bradley, who was actually the “original” Captain America." They go on to clarify that they don't know for certain that Lumbly will play Bradley, but they are sure the character will be introduced in the series.

It's interesting that Falcon refuses to wield the shield after accepting it from Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers: Endgame, but we're sure he'll have his reasons. Bradley's involvement has also led to speculation that his grandson Eli, aka Patriot, may also be introduced. This would potentially set-up another member of The Young Avengers team, but that's all up in the air for the time being.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier also stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/USAgent.

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” The all-new series is directed by Kari Skogland; Malcolm Spellman is the head writer. Debuts on Disney+ this fall.

So what’s the deal with Bradley? I had heard that he got the Super Soldier treatment before Rogers, and I’ve heard that he got it after Rogers in an attempt to recreate it.

It’d be pretty shitty to say that Stanley Tucci’s Erskine was super racist and okay with testing the treatment without black citizen’s knowledge or consent.

@Chewtoy - he came after Steve. He was an attempt to recreate the serum. Erskine had passed away and others wanted to recreate what he did.

@BlackBeltJones - It sounds like they're changing it for the show though; that Bradley proceeded Rogers but was swept under the rug

@tmp3 - I wouldn't mind this I guess, but I also feel like Steve should be the first Cap. It wouldn't bother me that much if they changed it.

@Chewtoy - A Nazi scientist (Zemo) experiments with blacks just as they expirement with Jews. That can be a good explanation. They prefer to risk the life of a black rather than the life of an Aryan

Reminds me of what they did with Hooded Justice, or what happened to Bass Reeves in real life (the black lawman who inspired the very white Lone Ranger). Wonder how far they'll lean into the racial politics of it.

Could make for an interesting set up, especially with the US government wanting us agent as the new Cap.

It's kind of a situation where history is repeating itself as Bradley may have been the first one the government experimented on, but the US rather had a white Cap than a black cap and Sam's against this.

Of course in the end he accepts the mantle after meeting Bradley he remembers what the mantle(Steve) stood for even if there is some disturbing history there

@MyCoolYoung - They're hving USAgent in this one, so I'm guessing it's an attempt to create another super soldier AFTER Steve (which would also make sense, in-universe, when it comes to Erskine and how his whole selection process in TFA was handled)

@Franshu - Erskine was a good man and a man of principle but the government has never been that. They could have easily been doing things behind his back or people could've been trying to recreate what he did to red skull.

In the comics, Bradley CAME AFTER Steve, not before. He is the first BLACK Captain America. Sounds like the show may change this though.

After Erksine took the secrets of the serum with him when he died, hundreds of African -American soldiers were forcibly experimented on to try and recreate the serum by darker factions within the US Military.

Many died as Isaiah was the only one to survive the experimentation long term.

Cap was kept in the dark on all of this and didn't learn until many years later.

This mirrors the actual secret forced chemical experimentation that many black soldiers endured during WWII.

@BlackBeltJones - I really wish Steve Rogers could have seen Isaiah in the mcu. Even though Steve didn't need another reason to be mistrusting of the government, I just really think Chris Evans would have killed it in the moment of discovery.

@MyCoolYoung - You have the perfect excuse to toss Evans a BAG OF MONEY to play Old Man Steve one last time so he can sit and talk with Isaiah. Doubt it happens but it would be cool.

It could be something special. Steve discovering he was not the first and most likely his physical birth into Cap was a by product of forcibly experimenting on black soldiers would hit him hard.

@BlackBeltJones - I dig that better than retconning him into being an earlier attempt into making a Captain America cause it basically makes more sense with what was established about Erskine and the usage of the Super Soldier formula by the US in TFA.
Franshu
Franshu - 2/20/2020, 11:29 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I'd much prefer this, mostly cause it makes sense in-universe regarding how Erskine was portrayed and how his selection process was show to be handled in TFA, imo.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 2/20/2020, 11:43 AM
@Franshu - yea I think having it before could muddy Erskine's legacy, unless its something along the lines of others in the military wanting their own Project Rebirth or hearing whispers of the serum whilst Erskine was still under Nazi employ and so they start their own take on the serum.

Great way to setup Patriot.

We're definitely getting a Young Avengers film sooner rather than later.
