MOON KNIGHT Director Mohamed Diab Reveals That The Show Originally Included Two MCU Crossovers

Moon Knight was easily the most standalone of the Disney+ Marvel series so far, but director Mohamed Diab has now revealed that the show was going to include some major MCU connections...

Spoilers for Moon Knight episode 6, "Gods and Monsters," ahead.

A few easy-to-miss Easter Eggs aside, Disney+'s Moon Knight told a self-contained story with no nods to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe whatsoever, but we now know that this wasn't always going to be the case.

During an interview with Variety, director Mohamed Diab revealed that an early draft of the script did contain two MCU crossovers, but they were ultimately cut in order to allow the story to stand on its own.

"I want to tell you the very first scene, there was a crossover, and the very end scene, there was a crossover. But as the story developed and we kept changing the scripts, we felt like, 'We don’t need that.'" Diab said. "It was a collective decision. And then I kept thinking: It’s a rule. There has to be a scene at the end that connects us to the MCU. But I think they decided, 'You know what, the surprise is that there isn’t, and what’s going to make this show unique is it doesn’t need anything else.'"

Diab doesn't reveal what these moments entailed, unfortunately, but it sounds like that post-credits scene featuring Jake Lockley was originally going to connect Marc Spector's adventures to another Marvel Studios franchise. Given the show's ties to Egyptian mythology and the introduction of The Ennead, we'd say Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a pretty safe bet, but there are obviously numerous other possibilities.

In the same interview, Diab says he believes the Moon Knight character is "here to stay," but confirms that there are no current plans for a second season.

What did you guys make of the Moon Knight finale? Do you think it was smart to cut the scenes connecting the show to the MCU? Drop us a comment in the usual spot.

Being so separated from the MCU was one of the best aspects of the show. Cutting the crossover elements was the right decision.

@Waddles - the ancestral plane from black panther was referenced

@Waddles - I think there was the GRC banner on the bus.

But while the show definitley stands on its own.. which is great, it does raise questions. Precisely because of the connected universe its said to be taking place in.

Like does everyone forget the sky was spinning? The big Kaiju fight? Is it just normal at this point that it's not a thread dangling?

Either way I enjoyed it though. Scarlet Scarab was a nice suprise. Really came away liking the actress.

I wouldn't mind if it happened on its own earth.

@Waddles - I think there was a little nod to the Ancestral Plane, but nothing else comes to mind.

@ElvenKingSlayer - yeah but that can't be what he's talking about since she was moved due to having a better idea in hawkeye.

Should’ve had Blade approach Jake at the post cred. Should’ve showed Jake beat up Harrow. I liked the show but wasn’t a fan of blacking out during the brutal parts. I’d say second or third favorite Disney + show.

@Waddles - agree… it was cool in the earlier episodes but would’ve felt like a good payoff to the Jake Easter eggs if they showed him murdering all the bad guys at the end.

@slickrickdesigns @Waddles - I see where you guys are coming from but I can also see why they didn't want to explicitly show it because they wanted to save the actual confirmation of Jake until the stinger at the end. While WE knows he's there and Marc/Steven finally figure out that someone else is there, the GA may still a bit in the. dark and may have not picked up on all the subtle hints throughout the series. Beside, during that fight sequence like Marc/Steven the audience doesn't really have time to stop and process what's going on, we, like Marc/Steven, just see the aftermath of it.

Also, another thing to consider is that we've already see the Marc version of MK be pretty violent and even Mr. Knight in the finale, and if Jake is supposed to SO much more brutal than Marc, the scenes with Jake MK (especially the finale) might have been too brutal to show and still keep the rating that the show had (I mean stuff like a crescent dart in the eye, slitting throats, etc. (basically the kind of fighting that Jake would do vs. Marc)). So in that case, the director may have opted for leaving up to the audience's imagination, which in opinion is better than watering Jake down because then you left wondering how he's any worse than Marc (fighting-wise, not morally).

Anyhow, just my thoughts on why they handled Jake they way they did. Of course to my second point, it makes me wonder if the next MK show/movie will have to be R-rated in order to see the "full Jake" or if they're just going to keep finding ways to not completely show it.

@BO31 - The fight in the finale is most likely going in my top 10 MCU fights, no joke.

@Waddles - She looked although I'm not sure why the avatar for a hippo would have wings, also where was Harrow's costume?

I thought the conclusion was weak and the reveal of Jake only just barely worked. The buildup for what I already kinda expected, and it's in a post credits scene? I think not showing how Harrow was beaten was a weak writing choice.

With this show dealing so much with gods, I would have loved to see a hint towards Gorr at some point

Jake Lockley was Spanish? They would have been smarter to make him Irish.

This show missed the mark for me. He was suited up for all of 15 mins total for the entire show and it just felt weak. The villian was Mr. Coolhand Luke the entire time and his "death" scene was super lame. I thought the lead actor did a good job but overall I would say I will never watch that again and a total miss for me on the MCU front.

I don't think the stand alone did it any justice as someone who has no idea about Moon Knight, wonder if this IS actually in the MCU. My guess is no.

Moon Knight was very disjointed and quite disappointing
I had high hopes for this but I feel that Marvel missed the mark with this one.
