Moon Knight has found its big bad!

THR reports that Ethan Hawke (First Reformed, The Magnificent Seven) has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series as the main villain, although we're not sure exactly which character he'll be playing.

In the comics, Marc Spector's arch-nemesis is fellow mercenary and former friend Bushman, so he seems like the most likely candidate. There are several other possibilities, however, including Crossfire, Black Spectre, and Jack Russell. If Marvel wanted to go down more supernatural route, there's Werewolf By Night, or maybe even Dracula.

Oscar Isaac is set to play the titular vigilante, and May Calamawy is also on board in an undisclosed role.

Marvel's Moon Knight has Cairo 678 director Mohamed Diab behind the camera, and we recently found out that the Disney+ series has also enlisted Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, Synchronic) to helm additional episodes. Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy; The Exorcist) will serve as showrunner, and is leading the show's writing team.

Plot details are still under wraps, but the small-screen adaptation is expected to stick pretty close to the basic premise of the comic, with Marc Spector, a highly skilled mercenary who has numerous alter-egos, channelling the power of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu to fight crime in LA.

A recent synopsis stated that "the action-adventure features a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him are distinct characters who appear against a backdrop of Egyptian iconography."

Moon Knight is expected to begin shooting in Budapest this March.

Moon knight must be something special if he's willing to join. He struck me as someone who didn't want any part of the CBM genre. Especially after he hated Logan.

My best guess is either Dracula or Jack Russell. Don't think he fits for Bushman.

“Now we have the problem that they tell us Logan is a great movie... Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is. I went to see Logan cos everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie.’ There’s a difference, but big business doesn’t think there’s a difference. Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it.” ~ Ethan Hawke
