MOON KNIGHT Cut References To THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's Villainous Gorr The God Butcher

Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater has revealed that there were once plans for the Disney+ series to reference Thor: Love and Thunder villain Gorr the God Butcher, with a couple of different ideas discussed.

Moon Knight ended up being a fun ride and a solid introduction for Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley. While there's currently no word on where the character will appear next, Marvel Studios accomplished what it set out to do by adding a major supernatural character to the expanding MCU.

However, one issue many fans have with the Disney+ series is its lack of connective tissue to the wider world Moon Knight inhabits. We've already heard about scrapped plans for a number of cameos, including the Eternals, but we very nearly got a major reference to Thor: Love and Thunder

Talking to The Direct, Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater confirmed that at various points in time, the series addressed the existence of Gorr the God Butcher either before or after the events of the upcoming movie. "There were different versions of the script where the Gods would sort of talk about, ‘This thing with Gorr the God Butcher just happened, and now we’ve got this new problem.’ And then there were other versions of the script where they sort of talked about, ‘We’re hearing rumors [that] Gods are dying, this is not the right time to get involved.’ Like we tried to have our cake and eat it."

"We knew the general beats of what would happen in Thor: Love and Thunder, so that we wouldn’t be contradicting anything," Slater continued. "But we had versions of the story that sort of teased Gorr’s arrival, and [ones] that were sort of taking place in the aftermath of that movie. Ultimately at some point, Marvel just made the creative decision, ‘You know, we don’t necessarily need this.’"

There are arguments for and against a reference like the one Slater talks about here. Moon Knight definitely would have benefitted from a more noteworthy link to the wider MCU, while teasing Thor: Love and Thunder this way would have generated a lot of excitement among fans. On the other hand, Marvel Studios should be able to introduce new characters without relying on Easter Eggs!

Do you think Moon Knight needed a few more nods to the world it takes place in?
