Marvel Studios' SECRET INVASION Reportedly Has A Jaw-Dropping Budget

Recently, Disney CEO Bob Iger made it known that Disney would be reducing its spending on Marvel Studios projects and the purported budget for Secret Invasion will make you understand why.

Secret Invasion reportedly debuted to extremely low viewership- only 994,00 viewers, the 2nd worst debut for a show outside of Ms. Marvel

However, estimating viewership on a steaming platform is somewhat of a guessing game as the streamers never officially release any statistics. This practice is one of the key issues in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike as the lack of transparency affects the residuals the streamers have to pay to writers and actors.

Still, this report can't be too far off as Disney CEO Bob Iger recently made comments that Marvel may have overextended itself with its foray into television.

Moving forward, Iger stated that the company would reduce its spending on both Marvel and Star Wars projects.

Now, a new report from Forbes reveals that Marvel's Secret Invasion was severely over budget and the final tally came in at $211.6 million.

For context, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a production budget of $250 million while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a budget of $200 million.  There's no box office revenue coming in to offset the cost of Secret Invasion and recent reports indicate that Disney+ is likely to start bleeding international subscribers as it just lost the rights to stream cricket.

Another point of context would be Loki season 1, which premiered to the tune of 2.5 million viewers.

Forbes reports that Secret Invasion was primarily filmed at Pinewood Studios just outside London and that the UK has a tax reimbursement for projects filmed in the country.  However, this reimbursement program requires projects to disclose how much they spent on production, which is how Forbes discovered Secret Invasion's budget.

A likely factor for the ballooned budget was the fact that the show underwent 4 months of extensive reshoots, which lead Samuel L. Jackson previously confirmed.

With declining viewership on Disney+ Marvel projects and recent reports that attendance at the theme parks in Florida and California is slowing down, don't be surprised if we soon get reports that a few previously announced Marvel television and film projects are outright canceled.

In Marvel Studios' new series Secret Invasion, set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

@Taonrey - I think it's become obvious they're money laundering, where has the budget gone? Are people embezzling?

@abd00bie - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting
Also, blockbusters are riddled with bad practices and they throw money at the problems instead of going for the root causes.

Example : we didn't have a script so we made sure we spent a lot on VFX

@Feralwookiee @abd00bie

I'm positive that's the case with Avatar's box office.

Biggest movie ever, but without fans or cultural impact.

@Usernametaken - honestly, the strike might actually save Hollywood with this kind of spending.

@Fogs - Yeah.
I can't really disagree with you on that one.

@Origame - I don't know, I think it's widespread into our culture and society. We're all so greedy and superficials that we made rich and famous people our idols and leaders while our politicians suck at their tits.

Personally I think it has become all very [frick]ed up, and we could easily do better if we changed our mentality and expectations. But I'll probably be alone on this.

@Origame - Well, look at the end of the golden age era of Hollywood. Lots of similitudes with now.

The streaming economic bubble has bursted, but things will get better.

Only sign of that budget i’ve seen is at the end of ep 4, otherwise it’s another case of extremely expensive content that shows no signs of its pricetag

@Cap1 - the de-aging they've used would be expensive

@Cap1 - Any idea how much shows from other studios cost to compare? How much was the budget for House of the Dragon for example? Comparing TV show to movie budget doesnt really mean anything. Secret Invasion has used a lot of effects so far, which really add up.

@GhostDog - the budget for Wandavision was $225 million, which I don’t see it there at all either! I don’t understand why Marvel TV shows are so expensive. Are they paying themselves to use the rights?

GhostDog

DarthOmega

Where did they spend it? Salaries? Other than the de-aging (Which is legitimately impressive) the show looks slightly better than a CW show. Better acting for sure, but I don't see that money on screen.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 7/16/2023, 2:30 AM
@DarthOmega - Considering they've been able to produce shows like Superman & Lois and Stargirl (just to animate the giant robot itself), just to name a few, I really don't think throwing shade at them is valid. At least not to the previous regime that did care about scripted content, not talking about the current one which is actually and literally cheap for the sake of cheap.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 7/16/2023, 1:43 PM
@NinnesMBC - I'm not throwing shade. I even congratulated them on the de-aging VFX. It's actually pretty stunning. But the rest of the show doesn't look anywhere near what the cost would suggest.
FireandBlood

And the show looks like shit. They don’t even have the Skrulls in the makeup.
