VisionQuest has finally arrived, and with it comes another big MCU mystery. The premiere establishes that a mystery Client has hired Paladin to capture Vision, and to make sure we're left guessing, their voice is distorted beyond all recognition.
While it's established that Ultron pointed Paladin in Tommy's direction, VisionQuest makes it pretty clear that he's not the mysterious voice. Remember, Ultron has no (or limited) internet access in Vision's mindspace, so he couldn't have hired the bounty hunter in the first place.
In terms of clues, those are few and far between this soon. All we know for sure is that they have a vested interest in Vision being brought to them alive and access to formidable technology capable of breaching Paladin's firewalls.
Could the Client be Wanda Maximoff, seeking out her great love and their son? It doesn't seem overly likely, but she and Billy are definitely among the potential possibilities. Power Broker is far more believable, especially as VisionQuest is confirmed to take place partially in Madripoor.
We also can't discount S.W.O.R.D., the agency that rebuilt Vision in the first place and surely wants its property back. There's even a chance it's a newly created character, or a villain we haven't seen for a while like Raza, Ezekiel Stane, or, dare we say it, Mephisto. The obvious answer is Jocasta, but perhaps that's too obvious?
For now, it would be wise to keep expectations in check, as those Mephisto theories in WandaVision led to some fans being greatly disappointed. Still, it's fun to have a series like VisionQuest that's clearly going to create discussion each week.
In our review, we concluded, "Paul Bettany and James Spader are masterful in VisionQuest, a staggering achievement by Marvel Studios and Terry Matalas that understands its characters, does right by them, and delivers one of the best MCU stories ever told."
In VisionQuest, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponise him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron.
His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnated. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.
VisionQuest stars Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D'Arcy.
The series premieres on Disney+ on October 14.
