WANDAVISION: Kevin Feige Says THE MANDALORIAN Helped Make The Decision To Release The Series Weekly

Fans of binge-watching were not pleased when it was announced that the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe shows like WandaVision would be released weekly, and Kevin Feige recently expanded on why that is.

With all nine episodes of WandaVision having been officially released, fans finally have the opportunity to binge the entire series at once. For mega-fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, it was a suspenseful week-to-week release schedule.

The episodic nature of WandaVision helps prepare both fans and casual viewers for what to expect when it comes to the mountains of series ahead of us. This year alone promises to deliver The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If?, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye, with Ironheart, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Secret Invasion, Armor Wars, I am Groot, Wakanda, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special still to come.

Although WandaVision kicked off the new phase of weekly episodic content, Marvel initially considered dropping the entire series at once. Kevin Feige recently spoke with TV Line about this decision, and it sounds like a big factor was the success of The Mandalorian.

"Everybody at Disney+ had decided — and we very much agreed with — the notion of the fun of week to week. And The Mandalorian has certainly proven this: There’s something fun to be able to follow along, to try to guess what happens next. With that said, I think it’ll be another experience — an equally fun experience — to binge them once they’re all available.”

What do you guys think? Do you prefer the weekly wait, or would you like the ability to choose whether or not you binge the series? Be sure to share your thoughts on the matter in the usual spot.

All nine episodes of WandaVision are now available on Disney+, with Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiering this Friday. In the meantime, Marvel super-fans can hear our chat with Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey below!

To be honest, I prefer the weekly release schedule. You're less likely to have things spoiled for you if the series were to drop all at once.

@bcom - ugh, can you imagine the Agatha song if it had dropped day 1? It would've been everywhere

@Dredd97 - Exactly! Social media would've been awash with spoilers of Agnes' true identity on day one. With everyone watching weekly it puts everyone at level pegging. Sure, there will be some viewers that will be an episode or two behind that may have a few things spoiled but not as much as having a whole series spoiled.

Only downside to the weekly format is that it gave fans weeks and weeks to analyze every detail and get mad that their fan theories didnt come true.

And no matter how civilized we believe we are there's something fascinating about watching a pool full of piranha in a feeding frenzy.

Basically: Disney told us we had to.

I have noticed with a lot of STAR series they are staggering the episode release on Disney+ even though all episodes already exist and were available on Hulu etc last year. It's definitely Disney's promo team wanting to advertise each episode of a program over months while also stopping the "We will pay for a month and cancel" mentality.

"With that said, I think it’ll be another experience — an equally fun experience — to binge them once they’re all available." Not really, unless you are willing to avoid the internet for 2 months so you don't have the experience spoiled. It only takes the weekend for Disney to post promo material from the last episode all over the internet and the experience to be ruined for someone. There are less chances of something being spoiled if you have the option to binge. You will only need to avoid the internet for up to a week while enjoying the show at your own pace.

I doubt Fiege or anyone at Marvel made this call. I think this has always been the plan for the Disney release structure as it stretches material further. Release an 8 episode series halfway through a month and you get 3 months of subscriptions.

Disney: You're going to release this show week to week because it makes us more money.
Fiege. ...OK.

Feige to everyone else: We choose week to week release for reasons other than money.

I prefer weekly myself. Binging can be a chore and I tend to retain it all better if I don't sit through it all at once.

Yeah but WandaVision's half hour runtime was a bit brutal week to week but it was a fun binge rewatching. Week to week for hour long shows are nice though

@Luigi - Not something I really usually do, but I needed a copy of WV for my digital files. I came across a copy with all of the episodes spliced together, and beginning and end credits edited out except the first and last. All of the credits scenes included as well. It comes in at a tight 4h36min. I skimmed it for quality and since everything checked out, I'm going to give it a spin in a few days. I still don't think I'll make it all the way through without a break though.

Release it week to week. Drop hints here and there about multiverse and cameos and new phase of Marvel Universe. Act surprised when end product completely goes different way.
I see you Mephisto, so clever to hide behind Kevin Feige 🤓

My biggest issue with WandaVision being week to week was that sometimes given its very little run time it didn't feel worth it. Mandalorian however always tells a nice condense serial each week that builds in the final episodes to come together.

Works much better than dropping everything at once in my opinion. Great thing was seeing the Marvel logo again each week.

I used to think they switched back to the weekly episode drop in order to ensure that people stay subscribed to the service, and don't just subscribe for a month, binge everything, and then cancel.

BUT, I must admit, it IS actually a lot more fun to watch the shows week to week, to get in on the discussions, theories, rumors etc. What was frustrating about WandaVision was how bloody short the episodes are.

In an ideal world, each weekly episode would be about 45-50 minutes of well told and executed story. Waiting a whole week for a 23 minutes episode with 10 minutes of credits [frick]ing sucked ass.
