WHAT IF...?: 6 Mind-Blowing Moments That Change The MCU And Tease Its Crazy Future - SPOILERS

The second episode of What If...? didn't disappoint, and the introduction of T'Challa as Star-Lord not only had major consequences for his reality, but could soon have an impact on the MCU we know too!

What If...?'s second episode asks the question, "What if...T'Challa became a Star-Lord?"

As you'll likely already know, it does a phenomenal job of answering that with a 30-minute adventure every bit as ambitious and exciting as James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies. This was far from a retelling of the 2014 film, however, and T'Challa's role as Star-Lord had far-reaching ramifications for his reality.

All of that is going to have consequences for this reality (we're anticipating seeing more of this Star-Lord), and perhaps even the one we've become so familiar with since 2008's Iron Man was released. After all, it's easy to imagine some of these characters - Nebula! - being a huge hit if they were to appear in live-action.

The Multiverse promises to be key for the MCU moving forward, and this episode really drives home how crazy things might get from here...

6. One Moment Changes Everything

984913331w31w23122313

We find a young T'Challa in Wakanda wishing his father, T'Chaka, would take down the barrier around their home so they can explore with the wider world. He refuses, so it's no wonder the youngster takes the opportunity to run through that and retrieve his spear.

It's then he's kidnapped by the Ravagers Taserface and Kraglin, but where's Yondu?

In this reality, he sent his underlings to retrieve Ego's kid, and the shield surrounding Wakanda drew those two to the city. As a result, they just assumed it was T'Challa who Ego wanted and this one decision changed, well, everything in this version of the MCU.

As a result, Peter Quill was left on Earth, and Yondu had a new adoptive son he could take on adventures throughout the Galaxy (something T'Challa jumps at the opportunity to explore).

5. A Whole New Star-Lord

984913331w31w23122313332

When we met Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy, nobody really knew who he was and "Star-Lord" felt like more of an ironic title than anything else.

Peter is definitely a good guy, but up until arriving on Morag, he'd seemingly been just another Ravager. T'Challa, on the other hand, has put Yondu's crew on a new path that's seen them become the Robin Hoods of the spaceways, robbing from the rich to give to the poor. He also has a major fan in Kraglin!

This world's Star-Lord has achieved a lot, including being able to turn Thanos to the side of the angels. In just a conversation, he managed to convince the Mad Titan to abandon his plans to commit genocide and recruited him to the Ravagers. That's one heck of an achievement and shows just how much T'Challa's newfound role has changed history.

Of course, Thanos' new outlook is good news for more than just The Avengers...

4. Good News For Drax And Nebula

984913331w31w2312231333233

With Thanos convinced to abandon his mission, Drax's family are never killed as the bartender we meet here talks about his wife and daughter with T'Challa. Korath mentions working for Ronan, but without the Mad Titan backing him, chances are he's not making a point of slaughtering innocents.

As for Nebula, while it looks like Thanos may have started enhancing her, she remains mostly unscathed and is far more humanoid in appearance than her MCU counterpart.

To begin with, she clearly holds a lot of resentment towards her father, but by the time the episode ends, she's managed to forgive him and even saves his life. Something tells us that would have never happened with the Nebula we know, and this femme fatale version is a lot more stable.

As for Rocket, Groot, and Gamora, we don't know what's become of them, but can't help but feel we'll see the latter soon!

3. The Collector's Rise To Power

984913331w31w2312231333

With no Mad Titan to instil fear in the Galaxy at large, The Collector filled the void by enhancing himself and becoming a crime lord in the process.

The likes of Howard the Duck and Cosmo remain part of his collection, but so does Hela's Necrosword, Captain America's shield, Mjolnir, and, perhaps most tragically, Korg's fist. Yes, this Collector killed the "chatty Kronan," though we're a little more intrigued about what he did to Cap and Thor.

Powerful enough to defeat even Hela, this Collector isn't someone to be trifled with, though he ultimately gets what he deserves when T'Challa frees his "collection" and he's overwhelmed by them.

This shows just how much potential the character had, and we wish these ideas had made it into live-action!

2. Return To Wakanda

984913331w31w2312231333233

After learning the truth about Wakanda (it wasn't destroyed as Yondu claimed), T'Challa returns home with his Ravager family. Reunited with his father, mother, and sister, he seems happy to be back on Earth, and it's interesting to think about what he could do for his home planet given the positive impact he had on the Galaxy at large.

The Ravagers also seem to fit right in, with Thanos and Nebula getting to know Okoye and Kraglin happily chatting away with Shuri.

This episode reveals that T'Chaka sent his people into outer space to try and find his son, so it's feasible an alliance between the Wakandans and Ravagers could be huge for this version of the MCU.

Unfortunately, this world's days might be numbered...

1. Ego

984913331w31w231223133

Peter Quill was never abducted from Earth, meaning he led an ordinary life after his mother passed away.

Working in a Dairy Queen and listening to some of his favourite music, things all seem well for Peter until a customer disturbs his dancing. It's Ego, his Celestial father who we know has a history of tracking down his offspring in an effort to find one capable of wielding their cosmic abilities and conquering the universe alongside him.

With no Guardians of the Galaxy to stop him, Ego is now free to manipulate Peter into doing his bidding and as The Watcher warns, that could spell doom for this reality.

We have a feeling Marvel Studios plans to revisit this, but whether that will be in season two or the next nine episodes obviously remains to be seen for now!

Great episode that fully took advantage of the What If concept better than episode one.

@BlackBeltJones - totally agree... but these episodes are too short to really explore these ideas. All we will ever get are superficial exposition of compelling events we'd love to see but they breeze by. Instead we get campy banter and anime level gags and a few quick fights.

This show has great potential, I just don't think we're gonna see it realized with such short episodes.

Honestly, each of these What Ifs deserve their own seasons to really develop the ideas they have beyond anything superficial.

Any comic readers here see that Hickman is leaving the X-men? Along with his own thing in Substack hes going to do the "Next big Marvel thing". I think hes headed for the MCU in some capacity. He teased it by putting Kevin Feige in the pages of X-men #21. I'd be all for it.

@HydraB0b - Avengers? Check. Fantastic Four? Did it. X-Men? Done. What else is there for "Next Big Thing"? Spider-Man. Nick Spencer set the table for Peter Parker to be taken off the table and hopefully this leads to Pete addressing Mephisto and OMD in Hell. I think Hickman might be the only one Marvel trusts to do this.

This was an interesting episode. The comedy was awful for me, but I liked the ideas. There was no real time to explore any of them though. Pacing yet again was an issue. I like this show but I don't love it yet.

So exposition heavy, my chest and bi’s are sore. A little too much Djimon Mustard. And the Collector looked like Kraven the Sabretooth starring Elton John. Taser Face and Kraglin both made me laugh both times, Djimmy Djohn Hachoo was aggravating. Thanos as The Dude is cool but ravaging like some follower? I don’t buy it.

Okay, I'm going to be that guy - there were so many good things about this - fanboy Korath, Ravager Thanos, Bond Girl-esque Nebula, and of course Chadwick. But there was just so much about this episode that made no sense in the context of the MCU which for me, made it a really distracting watch.

1. Why was he called Star-Lord? Star-Lord was a very specific name given to Quill by his mom.
2. 1988 T'Challa's abduction then '20 Years Later' puts this in 2008 so before even the first Iron Man takes place. We have Cap's shield with the collector - even though he'd have still been in the ice. We have the initial Morag raid on behalf of Ronan six years too early - fine okay, the galaxy is a different place. But wasn't Ronan stealing it/in cahoots with Thanos? A Thanos who now is no longer interested in that. The timeline issue caused me the most bother. It seems like the episode should have been set in present MCU but they [frick]ed the timestamp.
3. Would Thanos REALLY be convinced to abandon his lifelong plan that easily?
4.Real Mjolnir or fake with the collector? I question how? Hela's helmet? Would T'Challas presence flying around as space Robin Hood really have altered the entire course of Asgards history?
5. Why did T'Challa seem to have super-speed and strength? He's a regular human without the heart-shaped herb.

I wanted to like it, there were just a few too many things that didn't ring right, although fun. I think Captain Carter, although much more boring, at least made a sort of logical cause and effect sense.

@CLTMAN29 - got the same question with point 1. Although with how Korath addressed him, I kinda felt this was a name imposed on him by other (as in, he's a lord of the stars with the work he's doing).

Point 2 is a good one though, didn't even think of that. Wasn't too bothered by Thanos abandoning his mission though. And as for 4, I was kinda hoping for T'Challa to pick up Mjolnir.

@CLTMAN29 - What if the WHAT IF stories are deeper than we realize? Perhaps the Watcher is turning to a page in a very long story that we find familiar. For example, episode one could’ve been What If… Red Skull learned the Cosmic Cube was more than just a battery? What If… the Super Soldier serum was active throughout the next 2 decades (as evidenced by the doctor’s survival, thus the serum didn’t die with him back then)?

The Watcher could’ve turned to a later page. What If… Bucky never became the Winter Soldier? That one has some serious repercussions. No Stark parent deaths; no T’Chaka death.

Episode 2 could’ve easily, as it was highly intended to show, started with Ego meeting Peter. It also could’ve been called Thanos never adopted Gamora or Collector was worthy. That’s a big one

@CLTMAN29 - For 4., the point is Thanos backing off left a vacuum that the Collector was able to fill. Once that happened, all sorts of other stuff could end up being changed.

Now this was a great episode. Without wanting to go through every familiar story beat, I could really appreciate everything going on. Including the voice acting. And with the way this episode ended, I'm sure we're getting more of Boseman's Star-Lord.

One question though, how did T'Challa end up with the name Star-Lord? Wasn't it Meridith who named Peter that?

I’d say this was a lot better than the first episode and felt like an actual What If story rather than a straight retelling with different characters. That being said, the humor was hit or miss and I’m really not in love with the animation style as much as others seem to be. Seems super stiff at times. Then again I’m not huge into 3D animation to begin with.

I think What If would benefit being a little longer so it doesn’t feel too rushed and maybe each episode having a different animation style to illustrate the different worlds and stuff, idk.

Rest In Peace, Chadwick Boseman. Thank you for bringing the Black Panther to life
