WHAT IF? Details Reveal Plans For A "Dark" New Take On Doctor Strange In Marvel Studios' Animated Series

One of the most intriguing parts of the first What If? trailer featured multiple versions of Doctor Strange, and we now have some new details on plans for a "dark" version of the Sorcerer Supreme!

In the first trailer for What If?, we saw Doctor Strange battling what appeared to be an evil version of himself. As the "good" Sorcerer Supreme was seemingly confronted by The Watcher at one point, there's been a lot of speculation that the MCU's Stephen Strange will be part of whatever's going on in the Multiverse in this animated series.

Time will tell on that front, but The Illuminerdi has now shed some light on plans for a "dark" Doctor Strange.

Apparently, "this version of Doctor Strange found magic after the death of his true love which led him down a darker path with dark and dangerous magic in an attempt to change his past."

We're guessing that's Christine Palmer, and after this Strange taps into the darker side of magic, that could quite easily lead to a clash with the big screen Strange we've been acquainted with since 2016. There's clearly still a lot we don't know about What If?, but these tidbits of information only serve to make the Disney+ series all the more intriguing.

We don't know when Marvel Studios will share new footage from What If?, but with Loki establishing the MCU's version of the Multiverse, chances are we'll see something in the coming weeks. Either way, we'd be willing to bet this show ties into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

A synopsis for the show was shared during last year's Disney Investor Day, revealing: "'What If…?' flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways."

"Coming to Disney+ in summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU," it continues, "featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; Ashley Bradley is head writer."

What If? premieres on Disney+ this August.

I wouldn't be surprised if this show is completely seperate from what we're getting in the main MCU timeline or has no mention of it or it's heroes.

@BlackBeltJones - This and Peggy!Cap are the only ones that actually seem good. T'Challa Star-Lord and Killmonger hanging out with Iron Man is whack, and Party Thor sounds lame too.

So maybe Christine Palmer gets into the car crash instead of Strange? Or Strange is still driving but Christine is there too and she dies?

Hmmmmmm. I was thinking the other person in this shot was Wanda, but maybe it's Christine?

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Really with all the What if comics, they really should look at some of them for ideas, would be better than some of the ones they have come up with

@dracula - I agree. Out of all the interesting What ifs? you could go with Peter Parker and they go with making him Hawkeye... I'm reading a What If that is What if Spider-Man kept the black suit and became Venom, it's an awesome idea to explore.
