THE WITCHER Author Andrzej Sapkowski Doesn't Appear To Be A Fan Of Netflix's Adaptations; Teases Future Books

It's been a decade since Season of Storms, the last chapter in Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher series of novels, was released. If you're a fan, you'll know that story was set between some of The Last Wish's shorts, with 1999's The Lady of the Lake effectively ending Geralt of Rivia's story.

Following a hit series of video games, the author's work has been adapted for television, with Netflix bringing The Witcher, The Witcher: Blood Origin, and animated series, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, to the small screen.

During a recent appearance at the Taipei International Book Exhibition 2023 (via SFFGazette.com), Sapkowski was asked to share his thoughts on the streaming service's take on his books. While he didn't comment on recent reports that the creative team behind the shows actively mock his work, his opinion on the TV shows is, "I've seen better. I've seen worse."

That's not exactly an enthusiastic endorsement of those projects.

Then again, we're not exactly surprised when the rumoured reason for Henry Cavill leaving the series is that he grew unhappy with how much Netflix has diverged from Sapkowski's work.

The author also revealed whether he intends to continue his book series, confirming that "They are in the plans." However, when it comes to the possibility of Sapkowski telling stories set after the events of The Lady of the Lake, he responded with a solid, "No."

"The story is complete, the saga has been concluded, so if by any chance I write something in The Witcher universe, and I sure have such intention, it would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel."

What are your hopes for The Witcher franchise's future on the page and screen? Let us know in the comments section.

Not surprised, it shits on the source material.

@Kurban - I hate it when movies shit on the source material. I understand some tweaks but a lot of Disney Marvel movies just take the piss.

@marvel72 - eh dc and marvel have so many different sources materials that this fine, this however isnt because there only one story and they couldn't even get that right.

@Kurban - have you played the games?

@BigPhilbowski - Yup. They’re better than the books.

@Kurban - yet you've no problem with the games shitting on the source material. Interesting. Almost as if you don't really have a gripe with them making changes at all. You just wanna whine about the show.

@BigPhilbowski - The games are better than the books. They improve the source material. The show is worse than the books. Therefore, the show shits on it. This is really simple logic.

@Kurban - the games aren't better than the books at all. But regardless of that. You complained that the show shits on the source material. Well so does the games. If anything, the show is more faithful to the source material than the games. So once again, you clearly have no problem with them butchering the source material yet you act like that's your gripe with the show. You're nothing but another troll complaining for the sake of it.

I really like the books and will read more if he writes them.

I liked the TV show well enough to watch both seasons and remain interested.

Then Blood Origin SUCKED, Cavill is gone, & dumbbell Hemsworth is in.

Zero interest now. I won't bother watching any more.

Love that the article leaves out the context that he also isn't a fan of the games and the changes they made. Almost like you're trying to fan the flames of the hate it recieves.

I didn't mind season 1,haven't watched much of season 2.

The show definitely needed more messed up creatures from The Witcher 3 video game.

@Shivermetimbers - Were the games close adaptations of the books?

@QuietStorm - pretty sure video games are sequels to the books

@QuietStorm - no they aren't. They have nothing to do with the books and completely changed main characters and plot points. Technically they're a continuation of the story but they aren't.

Are the books actually any good? I havent read any of them.

First season followed pretty close but last season diverged heavily and this one looks to double down on that.

Bummer because it is an iconic series and they could have had something great if they just followed the source. This is something all streamers could learn from. Wheel of Time and Rings of Power make the same mistake.

Have the books ever concluded the Wild Hunt? I know thanks to Witcher 3 they must still be around after the last book. All that build-up, so I assume there was some pau-off in the books.

Anyway, think he is indifferent to the games as well. Kinda makes me wanna see him write a tv show or game himself, since he does want to write for that world again.

They took something great and buried it in elephant poop.

Sad.

Not surprising. The show came off as fan-fiction often.

People in Hollywood will attach themselves to IPs they hate as long as it boosts their careers in someway (Mindy Kaling).
