Zack Snyder Shares New Details On His R-Rated Director's Cut Of REBEL MOON

Netflix debuted a lengthy teaser trailer for Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon on Tuesday, giving us a first real glimpse of some footage from the filmmaker's visually-stunning sci-fi epic.

The first part of the Seven Samurai-inspired space opera is set to premiere this December, but Snyder recently announced plans for a director's cut, and shared a few more details during an interview with Tudum.

Snyder has become known for releasing extended versions of his movies, and the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League was a very different beast to the widely-panned original. With a full hour of additional content, it sounds like he might have similar plans for Rebel Moon.

"The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it. It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version. And with Netflix, we shot scenes just for the director’s cut. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans, like a real discovery that they would not [otherwise] get. I’m really excited about it!"

In addition to plenty of new scenes, the director's cut of Rebel Moon will be R-rated, but it sounds like even the standard version that'll debut on Netflix won't exactly be a family-friendly affair.

“Zack told me, ‘It’s like Star Wars but with violence, sex, and swearing,’” Ed Skrein recalls during a set visit interview with Den of Geek.

Have another look at the trailer below.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The heroes of Rebel Moon are: Kora (Sofia Boutella), an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back; Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium; Tarak (Staz Nair), a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons; Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks; and Milius (E. Duffy), a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World.

Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 22. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will debut on April 19, 2024.

What's the point of making multiple cuts of a movie, which is planned to be a streaming-exclusive from the outset?

Already with the Snyder Cut? Movie's not even out yet.

Yeah, I don't really get this either. Why not just direct the movie you want the first time... he's releasing it in two parts anyway.

This guy has a fetish for directors cuts, they could release the movie in this way from the get go.
It’s not a film for general audiences anyways. So why not release it the way he intended?

If there’s so much material left on the cutting room floor why not use it all and turn it into a series, trilogy or whatever?

I don't like the idea of filming things specifically for a directors cut, however it does make sense why there is one.

Netflix probably want an easily digestible movie without a long runtime, whereas snyder wants to slow mo his slow mo and give us something closer to 3+ hours.

Movie already looks like a slog to get through and this mf wants to extend it further? 😂

look... on one hand, I kind of get the idea of telling a more expansive story to avoid the formulaic bull shit that most movies find themselves in now, partially as a result of the 2.5 hour restraint, but at the same time, if you can't tell your story in 2-2.5 hours, you're probably not the best storyteller to begin with. There's zero reason for him not to have been trim this down, as he's working with Netflix, who's pretty notorious for giving filmmakers leeway, except in casting decisions. He had the opportunity to make his film, and this just sounds like he's admitting that it will be shit before it even comes out so that people buy into his "director's cut."

If that were the case, just make this a mini-series, or a 3.5 hour movie to begin with. If it's already done, then just release it the way you intended to release it the first time.

I was a Snyder fan... but shit like this is proving the anti-Snyder crowd right.

@Demigods - I just don't get it, why not just make this into a series? Would give him all the leeway to tell his story with out time restrictions.

This makes no sense but he did say “he can’t help himself”

Backwards thinking. Movie isn’t even out yet.

I almost made a joke on the last rebel moon article about how I would just wait for the snyder cut before I see the movie. But, that would have been a lie, because I’m still not watching it. Lol. This guy is so full of himself!!!

Clearly the directors cut is just marketing to capitalize on Snyder Cut awareness. It’s dumb that the directors cut isn’t just the normal version since it’s a streaming movie. I’ll just wait for that version

The point of a directors cut is because studios want to release a shorter version to make more money. But this is streaming by a studio that has no qualms with R rated property, wtf is the point of this other than ego or marketing?

Talking about a director's cut prior to the actual movie being released doesn't really say much great about him, it really says he agrees to jobs where he can't do what he wants and then plans on sucking more money out of the studio afterward to get a director's cut released and at the same time riling up a fan base for much about nothing... too bad he isn't good enough of a director to get the first cut of the movie to not only what he wants but also the studio and the public.

Is it almost an extra hour for the whole thing or is he only talking about Part 1? With it being divided into 2 parts already it's likely going to be 4 hours just for the normal cut.
