AHSOKA Season Finale Spoiler Review: Did The Latest STAR WARS Show Stick The Landing?

The season 1 finale of Ahsoka, "The Jedi, The Witch, and the Warlord," is now streaming on Disney+, and while the episode did deliver on thrilling lightsaber action and some intriguing firsts for the galaxy far, far away, a lack of answers and some rather baffling story/character decisions result in an ultimately frustrating viewing experience.

Over the course of 8 episodes, Ahsoka - which, let's be honest here, was basically a live-action fifth season of Star Wars Rebels  - focused on powerful Force-wielder Ahsoka Tano teaming-up with her former Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren in an attempt to prevent the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn from returning from a distant galaxy to (potentially) rebuild the Empire and wage another war. The hope is that by learning Thrawn's whereabouts, they may also reunite with Ezra Bridger, who disappeared in the Rebels series finale.

It's a relatively straightforward story, but showrunner Dave Filoni does, at least to some extent, rely on viewers having a previously-established connection to these characters. If you haven't watched the animated shows (Rebels, in particular), are you really going to care?

This is obviously debatable, and one could argue that the cast do what is required to make their respective characters compelling enough to hook more casual fans in, but this does become a bigger issue when Filoni begins to introduce lore from Rebels and The Clone Wars with literally zero explanation.

Former Jedi Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson) seemingly being confirmed as a representation of one of The Mortis Gods, The Father? For those who haven't watched The Clone Wars, it was just a guy standing on a statue. Ahsoka catching a glimpse of Morai, a convor with a mysterious connection to the Daughter, who has watched over her for many years? If you skipped the animated shows, just an owl taking flight.

A series leaving a few unanswered questions is nothing new, of course, and we're sure at least some of these developments will be explained in season 2, but there is a difference between dangling plot threads and lazy writing, and some pretty head-scratching decisions were made in the finale.

Remember how the entire point of tracking Thrawn down was to stop his return by any means necessary? Well, towards the end of the episode, Ezra is able to infiltrate the Grand Admiral's ship with the aid of a force-push from Sabine, and instead of confronting the villain and doing his best to hinder his escape, he... disguises himself as a Stormtrooper and retreats for a somewhat subdued reunion (why is nobody allowed to hug on this show?) with Hera.

Did he simply figure he was too hopelessly outnumbered to attempt to stop Thrawn on his own? Was his plan always just to hitch a ride home and deal with the returning Imperials down the road? We have no idea, but without any explanation, we can only look at this as a pretty major inconsistency in the narrative.

These problems aside, the finale featured some incredibly exciting action sequences, with Ahsoka, Sabine and Ezra facing a legion of zombified Night Troopers, and possibly the best lightsaber duel of the entire season, with Tano finally taking Elsbeth off the board for good.

Also, right at the end, we got a moment Star Wars fans have been hoping to see for many years: the arrival of Anakin Skywalker as a fully-fledged Force Ghost.

Ahsoka was a highly enjoyable show, for the most part, and an undeniable delight for Star Wars Rebels fans. The finale left a lot to be desired from a story standpoint, but we remain hopeful that a second season will rectify at least some of its issues.

What did you think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments down below.

Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

The series stars Rosario Dawson in the title role, with Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, with Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.

Kevin Kiner was announced as the series' composer.

Ahoska is written by executive producer Dave Filoni, alongside executive producers Favreau, Kennedy, Wilson, and Beck. Gilchrist is co-executive producer. The series’ directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel and Rick Famuyiwa.

What doesn't make sense is you thinking Ezra would take on Thrawn by himself lol.

@rkshuttleworth - so it works have made all the difference with one more green as goose shit jedi by his side? The entire point of their mission was to stop Thrawn at any cost, and Filoni decided it didn't really matter THAT much in the finale

@MarkCassidy - that was not Ezra mission and he made it clear for 3 episodes he just wanted to go home.

@SteveTheGodHater - ya dudes such an imbecile cartoon caricature he didn't mind Sabine's choice to negate what he did at the end of Rebels nor did he care that Thrawn was heading home. Trash writing. Incompetence across the board.

@SteveTheGodHater - So after making the sacrifice to strand Thrawn on Peridia in Rebels to ensure the safety of the galaxy, Ezra decides that he doesn't actually care about any of that and just wants to go home even if it means unleashing potential disaster for everyone he cares about. Interesting. I'm gonna stick with my initial theory that it's crap writing.

Never watched a single episode of Rebels or the Clone Wars, and I thought Ahsoka was great. It really wasn’t difficult to pick up the lore and relationships, unless I completely misread some of the implications. :P

@InfraMan - Im the same. never watched the other shows. I really like Rosario Dawson and did enjoy the show.

@InfraMan - me too. They did a good job, I thought it was great

@ProfessorWhy @InfraMan @Reginator - Yeah I'm with you guys. "The Clone Wars", "Rebels", etc. all came out when I was doing my graduate work and I didn't have a whole lot of time for anything, so I never really watched them, but I know the general plot points and who the main characters were. So I really enjoyed this show and had no problem picking things up, although I'm sure I missed a bunch of little nods to the shows and such.

Overall I felt like (and this may be a debatable point) this looked and felt the most like a "Star Wars" show in the more traditional sense out of all the SW shows so far on D+. Don't get me wrong, I love "The Mandolorian" and that's still my favorite, but that has more of a lone gunman Western kind of feel (which is obviously the intention). This was more like the OG SW movies with the team of lovable characters reuniting after years of being apart, almost like the reunion of the OG SW characters (Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and the droids) that we never got.

@StSteven - I would add that I'm very surprised at how much I enjoyed the supernatural elements. It freshens up star wars and makes the threat more sinister and imposing, while naturally fitting alongside the existing lore and " rules"

@ProfessorWhy - Yeah good point. I enjoyed that as well and I think they handled it very well, as it could have skewed more toward cheesy if the Night Sisters were made to be more like cackling witches ("I'll get you Ahsoka! You and your little droid too!"). Plus it makes sense that in a space as expansive as (now) 2 galaxies there would be more supernatural forces around that just the light and dark sides of the Force (assuming that we're all back to the Force being a supernatural force and not a bunch of shit floating around in your blood stream).

@InfraMan - same thing my 2 brothers and their wives said, they are caught up on everything live action except the cartoons, but now one of my sister in laws is ready to binge clone wars, she says she’s on the starwars grind, and I don’t think her and my brother have watched Andor either, so I told them to check that out. But they said they had no problem following along.

IT definitely set up some interesting threads, but it felt like it needed more time, especially with how Sabine became so powerful in the force in a relatively quick time span.

@ModHaterSLADE - Sabine ultimately was able to help lift one guy. That’s not becoming so powerful with the Force all of a sudden.

ModHaterSLADE - 10/5/2023, 2:33 PM
@DTor91 - Yeah, to go from barely being able to move anything to launch a grown man 50 plus feet with ease. Get real...

bkmeijer1 - 10/5/2023, 2:39 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - I didn't really like it either, but it works well enough for me. The way I see, she just needed to establish some connection to the force in order to basic maneuvers like that.

It's kinda like how you only need to give a boulder the tiniest push for it in order to roll down the mountain. Once it's going, it's going hard
