ANDOR Head Writer Tony Gilroy And Star Diego Luna Discuss Not Using The Volume For Latest STAR WARS Series

All of the live-action Star Wars TV shows on Disney+ have utilised The Volume, but that won't be the case in Andor according to Head Writer Tony Gilroy and star Diego Luna. Read on for details...

The Star Wars franchise has always found ways to push the boundaries of technology, but The Volume has been a total game-changer. First utilised on the set of The Mandalorian, it allows Lucasfilm to digitally create backgrounds while shooting is taking place. That means no more green screens for actors, and the footage on video wall even moves along with the camera.

This makes it more than just a simple background, and The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi also used it to create ultra-realistic surroundings for these characters in a Galaxy Far, Far Away (it was utilised by Taika Waititi for Thor: Love and Thunder on the big screen as well).

Thus far, The Volume - which is also known as StageCraft - has been part of every Star Wars TV series on Disney+, but that's going to change with Andor.

"Yep, we’re old-school" Head Writer Tony Gilroy told Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), confirming that they built sets and shot on location for the Rogue One spinoff. "We didn’t use StageCraft at all."

Andor star Diego Luna adds, "As an actor, it’s beautiful. Everything is mechanical. You’re interacting with real stuff." Fiona Shaw, meanwhile, notes: "My character’s house is built from parts of old spaceships. I used to go out and just stare at it. Breathtaking."

Luna does acknowledge that this practical approach has some downsides, though. "In Pitlochry, Scotland, we had to walk for hours up a mountain to set up one shot. Huge effort. Really dangerous to get there. All you can see around you is sky, trees, rivers, lakes. Amazing! Like being on another planet."

It's a little odd to wear this as a badge of honour given how impressive what we've seen in the other Star Wars TV shows has been, but this sounds like a very different type of series.

Andor explores a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved.

It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

The first three episodes of the show premiere on Disney+ on September 21.

Just based on the trailers, it shows. The Volume is neat and was very helpful during Covid I’m sure. The Batman and *some* of the Mandalorian made good use of it. But the Andor trailer looks cinematic, gritty and real compared to whatever Lucasfilm did with Kenobi, which looked like a fan film shot entirely on a sound stage.

I’m so tired of Kathleen Kennedy being in charge here. Simple quality control. Why is it nobody’s job to make sure these shows all at least look similar? Andor looks completely different than Kenobi, for the better.

meaning this show got a bigger budget than most other Star Wars shows if all is built physically and has an increased episode amount.

So I'm asking you Kathy....do you like Diego?

And I’m glad because even tho the technology is amazing, it was not well utilized in Kenobi and Love and Thunder. Everything looked the same and some parts even fake.

They really need to bring back the old school way of building sets and such. CGI should be an enhancement tool, not to replace everything.

Hopefully movies in the future don’t end up with fully CG actors xD
