OBI-WAN KENOBI Director Deborah Chow On Why The Show Reminded Her Of Movies Like JOKER And LOGAN

Well, we bet you never imagined seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi compared to Joker and Logan, right? Find out exactly what director Deborah Chow had to say about that, and her Rogue One inspiration, after the jump...

Obi-Wan Kenobi's story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where the hero faced his greatest defeat - the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

We were on hand for the show's global press conference a little earlier this week, and Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Moses Ingram (Reva), and director Deborah Chow were there to answer questions. The latter explained her approach to the Disney+ series (via SFFGazette.com), sharing an unexpected comparison between Obi-Wan Kenobi and R-Rated comic book movies like Logan and Joker.

"I think I was the most excited about getting the opportunity to do a character-driven story, in a similar way – it's a different tone – but something like Joker or Logan, where you take one character out of a big franchise and then you really have the time and you go a lot deeper with the character," the filmmaker said. "So, that to me seemed really exciting to get to do in Star Wars."

Later, Chow would go on to share how another Star Wars project inspired her approach to this story. While the director has previously helmed episodes of The Mandalorian, it was 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that was key for her here. "One of the [Star Wars projects] that I think is really interesting visually is Rogue One," Chow noted. "And I was really looking a lot at the atmospheric sense in that, and a lot of the visuals in that, which was, you know, pretty awesome."

We'll have more to share with you from this event soon, but it's fair to say "Ben" Kenobi is in safe hands with Chow. The filmmaker would later point out that Obi-Wan Kenobi is a project she's been working on for three years, so to call this series a passion project may be an understatement.

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 27.

Just don’t be a cameofest and spin-off fest. I know it won’t but I want the Vader/Obi-Wan just to be nightmare of Obi-WAN’s.

High bar to set for yourself

Hopefully this isnt another Book of Fett situation

Will Dinn show up to help him in the last 3rd and take over the show (seriously even when they were on screen together he got more focus than Boba)

You know, for me I'm realizing that literally only the Prequel Trilogy has massive replayability factors for me. When I was a kid I would watch the OT like every few years, but that all ended after the Prequel Trilogy. I'm not sure if I've gone back to watch the OT since The Phantom Menace released. In fact, literally everything Star Wars from the animated and live action shows to the A Star Wars Story movies to the Sequel Trilogy, I've only ever watched them once then never had a single desire to revisit them.

Well actually I did watch The Force Awakens a handful of times, but that was more so to search for Easter eggs and clues about Rey. But I'll likely never rewatch the ST ever again.

But the 3 Star Wars movies I have found myself revisiting over the past 20 years or so or however long it's been is the Prequels. U know they are full of flaws, but I find those films easier to watch and get into. I'll randomly rewatch revenge and attack, and I think I've even watched Phantom a few more times since.

I rewatched Revenge just the other day and loved it aside from a few wonky lines and really dated effects in a few shots. So I'm very much looking forward to Obi-Wan Kenobi. If it's good, I'll probably be rewatching this more than anything.

Fast forward three months and I really hope we can’t say….”Because She hoped Kenobi would be as good as Joker and Logan…..but it wasn’t even close.”

But seriously do you think for one fraction of a second that Disney would let a show be as dark and gritty as those two movies?

No way in hell.

@SpaceParanoids - she clearly wasn’t comparing the tone

@Armageddon26 - Even as character development goes Disney hasn't even come close to that level. It's always cookie cutter surface level character development with Disney so don't hold your breath.

Looking towards Rogue One for atmosphere is a great idea. Out of the movies, that's really the only one that managed to capture that Star Wars feel in my opinion.

And now that I think about it, I kinda wanna see Hugh Jackman in Star Wars now. Maybe in a role similar to Liam Neeson's

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but......( And I love star wars )...
All nine are pretty bad movies made for children, and the place they hold on our hearts are based off of our own childhood feelings and experiences with them. Kids playing with toys and making it real and important with imagination. I don't see any star wars product elevating itself above this level, and that is how it should be

@ProfessorWhy - For me, I don't consider them to be bad. I enjoy them, but as someone who didn't grow up with them, I don't find them to be exceptional. They must've been incredible for their time, but I don't think they hold up so well now. If I had to pick though, Rogue One might be my favorite, although it's hard to say.

@Fares - the crappiness appeals to me. For example, I really enjoyed the book of boba Fett because it reminded me of playing with toys.... It could've been more intelligent sure, but I don't come to star wars for that.
Also, rogue one was excellent and my favorite of the Disney star wars products. It was also more intelligent than other SW stuff, but still pretty silly and old fashioned. Well balanced
And imperfect

@ProfessorWhy - Ah I see what you mean. It's just that for me "crappy" and "enjoyable" can't refer to the same thing. If I enjoy it, then the good outweighs the bad, ergo it's good. And good can come in different forms. And no form is inherently better than any ohter. It doesn't all have to be complex and nuanced storytelling. Not that Star Wars can't be that if it wanted to be, but it already got strong points in other aspects specific and innate to it.

Joker, Logan, Rogue One. I like what I'm hearing.
