THE ACOLYTE Story Details Confirm It Will Be Set 100 Years Before STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE

New details have been revealed about The Acolyte's High Republic era setting, while we also have some fresh intel on Jon Watts' (Spider-Man: No Way Home) Star Wars series that's codenamed "Grammar Rodeo."

Despite delivering some big hits on Disney+, it still feels like the Star Wars franchise is in a state of flux. It's no secret that a number of movies are in the works, but none of them have confirmed release dates (aside from Rogue Squadron which, quite clearly, isn't going to meet that December 2023 slot).

After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the sequel trilogy in general, disappointed fans, it's fair to say now might be a good time for Lucasfilm to shift its focus to other eras in this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

That will be the case on Disney+, anyway, and one such project is The Acolyte. Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com) has shared new details on the project today, confirming that it's currently in the casting phase. Showrunner Leslye Headland tells the site writing is pretty much done, and confirms that events will take place during the High Republic Era roughly 100 years prior to what we saw in The Phantom Menace.

"A lot of those characters haven’t even been born yet. We’re taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don’t know much about," she explains. "My question when watching The Phantom Menace was always like, ‘Well, how did things get to this point?’ How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?"

The Acolyte is described as a mystery thriller, taking place at a time when the Galaxy appears to be largely at peace and a little more refined than in later movies. "We actually use the term the Renaissance, or the Age of Enlightenment," Headland says. "The Jedi uniforms are gold and white, and it’s almost like they would never get dirty. They would never be out and about. The idea is that they could have these types of uniforms because that’s how little they’re getting into skirmishes."

The site also makes mention of a project codenamed "Grammar Rodeo," revealing that it pays homage to the episode of The Simpsons where Bart and his friends steal a car and run away for a week, using an educational event as cover. This untitled series takes place after Return of the Jedi, and Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts is credited as creator and executive producer.

Joining him is writer Chris Ford (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and a casting notice has gone out for four children, around 11 to 12 years old. It's said that inside Lucasfilm, "the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the '80s."

In the same report, it's noted that Andor will arrive on Disney+ this summer, The Mandalorian is eyeing a late 2022/early 2023 debut, and Ahsoka, as expected, will premiere next year.

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for updates.

I hope Kevin Feige's film is the old republic, I don't expect much from Jon Watts the spiderman films have been very average apart from the nostalgia bait in no way home.

The Acolyte is the only new Star Wars thing I'm interested in. I really hope I'll like it.

It would be great to see the Jedi Temple Guards in live action on the Show.

The gold and white attire of the guards could come from that time. Also, they can be men without face or name. Members of the order who have sacrificed everything to dedicate their lives to protecting places of worship.

I'm not that interested in ''Well, how did things get to this point?''. From the little we know, we can understand the Jedi went from powerful Jedi that drove the Sith to (what they believe was) extinction a 1000 years prior to the political lackeys that hand their Messiah over to the devil due to their ignorance they are in TPM.

How they got to that point, is something I think is best left to our imagination. Not everything needs to be explained. But maybe that's not the side of the story we're getting, and it's just gonna be focused on Tenebrous.

And do we need a coming-of-age story set so close to the Originals, when A New Hope is a coming-of-age story right there?

“ How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong?”

A question that actually should have been answered in Episode 3 had Lucas laid them out better.

The High Republic is Kathleen Kennedy’s unpopular baby, but they are doubling down on its unpopularity with a show.
And 100 years before TPM …..means Yoda will clearly be alive.
So we’ll have that again.

@SpaceParanoids - they turned into political lackeys that almost willingly handed their messiah over to the devil because they were so ignorant.

The Jedi's occupation with politics and ''peacekeeping'' is enough of an explanation for me, but I can understand why some would want more of that.

@bkmeijer1 - The problem was that Lucas didn’t flesh that out enough. It would have been interesting to have a contrary opinion, perhaps from Qui Gon and carried on my Kenobi, that the Jedi are getting too involved in politics.

@SpaceParanoids - true. I think it was noticable that Qui Gon was seeing the Jedi were too preoccupied with other stuff (and Yoda did start to see that later on as well), but not really how he came to that conclusion.

@SpaceParanoids - The High Republic is in fact quite popular if you step away from the idiot "Anti-SJW" crowd.

This sounds good so are we gonna get Darth Plaguis in live action ?!?!? The book is really good and he is one of the main reasons the sith were able to infiltrate the senate and take over

bkmeijer1 - 5/18/2022, 8:42 AM
@19Batman84 - could be. I'm kinda hoping we get to see some of that Tenebrous and Plagueis scheming, and maybe even some of Venamis too

I know many people cited political drama as one (of several) reasons they hated the prequel films. But I'm one of those millenials who grew up with the prequel trilogy and loved them. I too had questions and wondered how the republic was brought to war and how politics played a part. These are the things that made me also love game of thrones.

I'm excited that they're exploring this in this show

@Vigor - same here. The prequels are the Star Wars movie I grew up with as well, and from the start I always though the politics were really interesting. Especially that of Attack of the Clones. The whole conspiracy plot is great stuff.

The Phantom Menace's trade treaties were indeed a bit lame, but it did serve as a good vessel through which all the major players were introduced in my opinion.
