THE MANDALORIAN: Jon Favreau's STAR WARS Series Reportedly Cost Disney Nearly $15 Million Per Episode

Disney is betting big on The Mandalorian as its flagship original programming for Disney+, reportedly spending roughly $15 million per episode for the upcoming live-action Star Wars series from Jon Favreau

Disney is sparing no expense when it comes to original programming for its upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, Disney+. According to the Wall Street Journal, the House of Mouse has opened up the checkbook for The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars series, which will launch alongside the streaming service this November.

Citing "people familiar with the matter," the publication claims the cost for an episode of The Mandalorian is close to $15 million. With eight episodes in the first season that's a hefty investment of $120 million for the series, not including any associated marketing costs.

There's a tremendous amount of hype and excitement surrounding the project and it seems Disney and Lucasfilm are confident in the series; Jon Favreau is reportedly already in the middle of writing the second season.

The Mandalorian made its highly anticipated debut earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, but much of the footage shown has been kept behind closed doors. Some promotional materials, like character photos and descriptions, have made their way online, but we've yet to see any official footage from the series released. That could change next month though, as Lucasfilm has already confirmed a sneak peek of The Mandalorian will be shown during the Disney+ panel at D23 Expo.

The Mandalorian will premiere on November 12 with the launch of Disney+.

Can anyone with a WSJ account tell me what the other "Shows Costing as Much as Big-Budget Movies" listed in the article were?

@tmp3 - It mentions Dune, Lord of the Rings, and See, but See seems to be the only one that they have a figure attached, also $15m/e. There's also a paragraph about how directors like Spielberg and Scorsese bloat TV budgets as well.

@Reeds2Much - Thank you. Looks like Apple's betting big on Momoa.

@toylled - I enjoyed that movie. But I'm not a Star Wars fan (I've never seen the olds movies).

@PeterCipher - I liked it too but it would have been better if Han and other OT characters weren't in the movie or at least took away the Rebels and Maul storylines.

@PeterCipher - They can't really do a Maul and Obiwan movie because of Rebels doing that already. Grevious would have been way better.

@OmegaDaGrodd - Too bad a lot of it has been subpar.

@OmegaDaGrodd - But the best parts of Battlefront 2 is based on old Star Wars content. I.E original trilogy maps and Clone Wars maps. What new maps have been any good? The Kessle one from Solo was pretty bad.

Off topic: On top of this being copyright infringement, is it really a good idea for "law enforcement" to use the logo of a murdering vigilante?

@Feralwookiee - You should make that an article. It would expose the racist [frick]s on the site.
