The fifth episode of Bates Motel does not have as much character and plot development, but there are a few things that happen. First, Norma is bailed out of jail and the cop she is dating destroys evidence. Then, Dylan grows closer to a work friend who is later shot by someone we do not know. Dylan hunts the shooter down and runs him over. Finally, Norman and Emma find the girl who was chained up in the basement.
Probably the most character development in this entire episode is for Dylan. When he hunted down the shooter of his friend it left me wondering "does the murderous streak run through the whole Bates family, and not just Norma and Norman?" That will be an interesting plot point to be used in future episodes.
Then Norma has a lot of character development in this episode. She goes absolutely crazy on Norman when she finds out the physical relationship he is having with Bradley. And it is not like the concerned parent anger, either, it's more like she is so attached to him that anything that could take him away from her and the motel she sees as a threat. It's getting easier to see why Norman becomes the way he is in Psycho.
Most of the plot development of this episode is dedicated to Norman and Emma finding that girl from the basement. Emma thinks that the cop and the man who attacked Norma were working together so they go to investigate the man's boat. In it they find the girl from the cop's basement and it was revealed that the two were working together. Norman and Emma bring the girl back to the motel and Norma finds out about it. It is revealed to her that the man she has been dating is actually a psychopath who keeps the girl in his basement. She gives a look like she cannot believe this but the episode ends before I could read too far into it.
So all in all it was a interesting episode that had some good character and plot development, but not as much as the previous episodes. I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to episode six. What I really want to see more of is Dylan becoming more and more murderous because that would be a fun plot point to see expanded upon. Also there was some character development between Norman and Emma but it was so minor I didn't think it deserved a paragraph.
