EDITORIAL: VENOM Teaser Trailer - The Fine Line Between Spoilerific and Satisfying

Many fans aren't happy that the first teaser for Venom didn't actually show, you know, VENOM. Some have defended the teaser for showing restraint, but can we really consider a glimpse of Venom a spoiler?

Last week, the first teaser for Sony Pictures’ Venom was released to a collective shrug. While the film’s stellar cast makes me optimistic that we’ll finally get a good on-screen version of Venom, there is still a general sense of apathy towards this movie. This can be attributed to its vague connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as Sony’s inconsistent record of making superhero films without the help of Marvel Studios.

This meant that the film’s first teaser was under some pressure to get fans excited. However, our first look at the upcoming movie didn’t exactly wow people. In my opinion, nothing looked terrible, but it was certainly lacking the jaw-dropping moments that the best teasers in recent memory have included. Think the Hulk bursting into the gladiator pit to face off against the God of Thunder in the teaser for Thor: Ragnarok, or Georgie shouting “You’ll Float Too!” in the It teaser.

Not only was the teaser lacking a proper money shot, but it was also lacking the titular character. Fans have been vocal about their confusion and displeasure over not getting a look at Venom in the teaser, but those defending it have been quick to point out that fans would complain just as loudly if the trailer showed too much. However, since the movie is called Venom, can a glimpse of Venom in the trailer actually be considered a spoiler?

We can’t fairly answer this question until the movie comes out, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it better not be. If Sony Pictures considers a shot of Tom Hardy in the symbiote suit a spoiler, then one would assume that we’re not going to be seeing Venom until relatively late in the film. If this is the case, the movie will be a full-fledged origin story where we don’t really get to see Venom kick ass—and lots of fans are going to be underwhelmed.

Perhaps Sony is being overly cautious since they have been criticized in the past for revealing too much in their trailers. This happened with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, so there’s a chance that the studio would rather err on the side of caution. But with reaction to the teaser being not quite as glowing as Sony would have hoped, it’s likely that we’ll get a look at Venom in the film’s next trailer.

While this movie is going to have to sell itself to win over skeptical fans, I definitely understand why the studio wouldn’t want to show its cards right away. Even if we ignore Sony’s spotty history of producing trailers, there is something special about saving a big reveal for the actual movie. Going back to the Thor example, I couldn’t help but think how awesome it would have been if Hulk’s appearance was kept secret while I was watching the movie for the first time.

Of course, the realities of film marketing don’t allow for a fully-realized mystery box approach to cinema. Since we haven’t actually seen the movie yet, it’s hard to say if keeping Venom’s appearance a secret is the right move. However, it won’t be easy to sell a Venom movie to audiences without actually showing them Venom. While the character is very popular, Sony doesn’t have the luxury of getting the general audience to buy tickets without knowing anything about it.

Marketing pressures are likely going to force Sony to show us Venom at some point, so let’s just hope they don’t spoil the movie in the process.

If by "Spoilerific" you mean "Generic" and by "Satisfying" you mean "Disappointing" then I agree with you 100%.

Teaser is supposed to get you excited for the official trailer.
This was bland. Maybe not a glimpse of Venom but if Tom Hardys voice started sounding like Venom at the end that would've been something to talk about.

This movie has A LOT of work to do to convince fans this will be good. You can't be vague with your trailers. Show us Venom, get us excited.

Cause right now, ain't no one gonna see this, lol.

@KWilly - It's a horror movie. This is a common technique of not showing the monster in the trailers or even much in the movie.

My thing with the character of venom itself is that it's only interesting when we see what it does bonding with Peter Parker. Eddie Brock is cool and all when he gets the symbiote but I need to see it attach to spider man first. Also the symbiote gives you telekinesis now?? That said good article and agree with most your points.

I don't understand why Sony is forcing this spin off. They literally have Marvel making them money. They could sit back let marvel handle all the production on their spiderman properties and just collect the check, life couldn't be easier for them. They have a whole plethora of films they could focus on. SMDH!

It was just a bad teaser. Generic and boring. They couldn't even make it exciting knowing full well they wouldn't showcase Venom even in a small magnitude.

Besides that, I think we should've seen a legitimate TEASE of Venom. We all know Venom is in the film and it's what we all want to see, so why not tease it in some capacity? Why not entice audiences with a taste of what we're all yearning to see?

It's like a Superman teaser, but all it showcases is the Clark Kent stuff.

i didn't mind the spoiler at all. definitely communicated that this isn't gonna be just another marvel movie, which is a welcome change of pace. still, not placing any bets on quality.

Venom teaser trailer showed more of the Symbiote than the Batman Begins teaser trailer showed of Batman.

@IronGenesis - Its too soon to see Venom!!! I like the mystery of not knowing yet. If we got to see Venom this early then we would want more. The comes out in October. There's plenty of time for another trailer. And Batman begins has to be my favorite CBM. Nolan started a new trend in the genre.

@IronGenesis - Wrong.

BB's teaser shows a glimpse of Batman in the very last shot, after Bruce says "Me".

Venom teaser on the other hand, didn't show even a single shot of Venom.

Get your facts right before commenting.

Devil's advocate here.

In 1925 when Universal was teasing "The Phantom of the Opera," there were no images released of the unmasked Phantom. No reporters on set, no sneaky photographers lingering around to leak pictures of Lon Cheney's messed up face. The poster didn't reveal the Phantom's face, the advertising didn't reveal the Phantom's face. The producers didn't want to show it, the director didn't want to show it. The only way to see the deformed Phantom was to see the movie in the theater.

I think "Venom" does have to prove to a lot of people that it's worth seeing, since so many people, particularly the people who care most about the character, remain to be sold on the movie. And maybe the studios' method of creating intrigue isn't working, but the studio gets to decide what they show, and when; a lost privilege in cinema today, with so many aforementioned people leaking photos of actors, costumes, sets, props, etc.

I get that movies and trailers have evolved since the 20's, and we're used to being shown outright what we want to see in a movie before we even see the movie. "Venom" is taking a different approach, and there's nothing objectively wrong with that. We're all going to see the movie, anyway. You will see Venom eventually.

Also, the movie doesn't come out until October. It's February. If you have this hard of a time waiting to see a CGI rendering of a giant dude in a black, alien-dinosaur suit, it's not because the movie will be bad, it's because you aren't a patient enough person. The solid chance is that Venom hasn't been finished being digitally created yet, so there's nothing to show.

I am disappointed that this movie is so far-removed from Spiderman. I don't understand how you can do Venom without Peter Parker.
