We’ve been anticipating major release date delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and, unfortunately, they have begun.
Kraven the Hunter, which had been set for an October 6 debut later this year, is now moving all the way back to August 30, 2024. That’s a surprise considering a poster and trailer have already been released, but Sony Pictures clearly didn’t fancy its chances promoting the movie without that A-List cast.
There’s more bad news as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has shifted from next March to "TBD." We’d expected the threequel to be postponed even before the strikes, but with actors unable to record dialogue, this was inevitable.
Madame Web is now going to swing into theaters two days sooner on February 14, while Venom 3 finally has a release date: July 12, next year. Will it be able to meet that date? We’ll see.
In other news, Bad Boys 4 is being taking aim at June 14, 2024 where it will go head-to-head with Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Unfortunately, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has shifted from this December to March 29, 2024 due to the cast being needed during post-production (presumably for ADR and the like).
Weirdly, Gran Turismo is also shifting gears. While preview screenings will take place during its planned August 11 opening weekend, it won’t open wide until the 25th. According to one Sony exec, "The stars can’t promote the film, but the audience can."
Unfortunately, we expect more delays like those you see here, especially as we head into the end of this year and the beginning of 2024. While it's good to see some movies get dated (and even brought forward) we've reached a point in Hollywood history which is surrounded by as much uncertainty as the pandemic, so it's probably best not to get too excited about anything yet!
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
