VENOM's Rotten Tomatoes Score And "Critics Consensus" Have Been Revealed

Love it or hate it, a movie's success often hinges on its Rotten Tomatoes score so what's the outlook for Venom right now? Well, it's going to be interesting seeing if it does break records this weekend...

October isn't usually a particularly competitive month for blockbusters so it's no great surprise that Venom looks set to have perhaps the largest October opening of all-time in North America. However, the reviews for the movie could put a dent in the Spider-Man-less spinoff's box office haul because the Rotten Tomatoes score is in and things aren't currently looking particularly good for the Marvel movie.

As of right now, 29 reviews have been counted with 8 Rotten and 21 Fresh. That means with an average rating of 4.3/10, Venom's current Rotten Tomatoes score is a lowly 28% putting it firmly in Suicide Squad territory but well above Fantastic Four. A lot of reviews still need to be counted so this score could change over the coming days but it's likely to increase or decrease significantly at this stage.

As for the Critics Consensus, that says: "Venom's first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways - chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man." Ouch. Are you guys still going to check out Venom this weekend?

yep. Venom can have a solo movie... After he's been introduced in Spider-Man. He's my absolute favorite anti-hero/villain... And Sony manages to [frick] that up royally.

@csims1885 - marvel studious will never make a solo movie ever even if they were to own the rights

Still have free movie passes that expire tomorrow, so I’ll definitely check it out. Not because the reviews are great, but because I am a cheap bastard

Only willing can put a ratio of 21 fresh and 8 Rotten and get a sum of 28% positive.

At least put some effort on it...

@Jeight8 - 28% of all reviews is accurate. 21+8=29. 8/29=0.275 = 28% positive.

"It exists as a waste of time (although, one hopes, a sizable payday) for some very talented actors, and it’s proof that even Marvel doesn’t always get it right."

I bet Feige would love this review.

Since The Amazing Spider-Man, the Sony Spiderverse has only gotten worse with each movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man - 72%

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 52%

Venom - 28%

Yeesh. I hope Sony just hands over the whole thing to Marvel.

@Ragnarocknroll - They're not doing that. Spider-Man is too valuable for them. Outside of Spider-Man, they have James Bond and Jumanji, and neither of them can make the money Spider-Man does. Sony won't ever give up the rights, until Disney buys Sony (which may very well happen). What I don't understand, is why they don't get new blood to run their Spider-Man properties. If they had a Zack Snyder or Kevin Feige, they'd have a better shot at coming out with something decent.

@SisterSunday52 - They're gonna have to sell him at some point if they keep taking hits like this. Spider-man is their last standing franchise and if it isn't received well with both critics and the audience as well as not make enough money back, then they're in big trouble if they try to continue it

SisterSunday52
SisterSunday52 - 10/3/2018, 9:05 AM
@SuperCBMcritic - It's because Spider-Man is their last standing franchise that they'll let Disney buy Sony before they EVER sell Spider-Man.
SisterSunday52
SisterSunday52 - 10/3/2018, 9:19 AM
@blitzburgh - I doubt he'd even want to, but there were elements of "Man of Steel" in "Spider-Man: Homecoming", specifically a hero who is determined to help and protect others, even if it means not being there all the time for his friends and family. That's not what I mean though.

Zack Snyder shook up the Comic Book Movie genre. Instead of treating Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman like they were made of glass, he did things that hadn't been seen outside of the comics, and put them through the ringer. He challenged them on the fundamental level and showed they were more than willing to meet that challenge and come out stronger on the other side.

Sadly, Warner Bros. didn't know what they had, dismissed him, and laughed at themselves for hiring them, but if Sony can get someone like that, who defies conventions and shakes up the genre, leading to more creativity, and better films, they could be a front-runner in the genre.

Battabing
Battabing - 10/3/2018, 9:38 AM
@SisterSunday52 - What? Look, I like a few of Zack Snyder's films, and I like even more how professional the man is, but let's not give him all the credit for what happened with his DC films.

For starters, Zack Snyder is not a good storyteller. He can direct the hell out of a movie, but once you ask him to write and direct, things fall to pieces. It's like David Goyer; a great idea man and storyteller, but a shitty director. Some of these guys needed to be reigned in by their producers, one of whom (Deborah Snyder) admitted that they shouldn't have deconstructed these heroes. I can say that I actually liked the experimentation, but perhaps it should have been earned. You need to garner goodwill before you take risks.

What DC should have done is simply adapt animated films like Superman: Last Son of Krypton, Suicide Squad: Escape from Arkham, and the Batman/Superman movie into live action remakes. Adding a few flourishes here and there that we've seen in the DCEU would have gone over much better and still distinguished the brand from Marvel.

Wasn't gonna go see it anyway. Hopefully this mess will be used as a bargaining tool to get Spidey home for good. I don't want Sony to have anything to do with Marvel movies. They've done enough.

Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender were supposed to be the heirs to Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman and Sean Penn like they were the heirs to Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Hoffman and Hackman, but their choices are killing them, absolutely killing them, to be fair, I thought Hardy was good in Venom, felt he knew the kind of film he was in, but still a strange choice, Hardy and Fassbender's heirs are already knocking on the door in Timothee Chalamet, Lucas Hedges and Barry Keoghan, they need new agents.

@ARMUS - Daniel Day Lewis has more range in his left foot than Fassbender has in his whole body.
