'Mass Effect 3' is an RPG Sci-Fi action shooter due to be released early 2012. It is the final installment in the Mass Effect series, and is planned to be the biggest and most epic of all three.

First, a little background.

The original 'Mass Effect' came out in 2007 on Xbox 360, and was released on PC in 2008. It has been described as a "hardcore Sci-Fi RPG", and is widely regarded as a modern masterpiece. Game Informer magazine said, "[Mass Effect is] the next big franchise for science fiction junkies to latch onto... a huge step forward for video games," and that it "rings in a new age of interactive storytelling."
The premise is as follows. Commander Shepard (first name customizeable) is humanity's last hope to save the world from certain destruction by an ominous adversary. This enemy is a common enemy of the entire known galaxy, and is one who's mystery is only exceeded by its power...like the Continuum Transfunctioner! (Let's see who gets the reference, +Bonus Points)

In the games, you play as Shepard, who has been officially elected the new James Bond. Shepard has been awarded the priviledges of Judge and Jury, having been deemed a 'Spectre', who works independently. Your job is to make and break rules across the galaxy to complete your mission. Without giving away too many spoilers, let's just say that you're pretty much facing something thats larger than life itself.

'Mass Effect 2' was released in 2010, and boy was it one hell of a sequel. It spans two discs on the 360, bled the franchise onto Playstation, and kicked tons and tons of butt. Fans of the series can vouch for this, even though some will tell you that the game featured less in-depth RPG elements. It's a bit noticeable, but the game is still amazing. For all the info you can bear, Google it or check out the Wiki page. Better yet, go buy both of the games!

After the second game seemed like it couldn't get any better, the threequel will be here to wow you soon enough. Game Rant has oodles of info about the game. Here are the biggest highlights.

"BioWare is taking their time to make improvements to every element of Mass Effect 3 and this is a big part of the reason the game was pushed back to 2012. Yesterday we spoke about how the RPG elements have a far greater impact on gameplay and today we’ll talk about how players will be able to experience more meaningful relationships with Commander Shepard’s team.
In both Mass Effect 1 & 2, Shepard is able to recruit a large number of characters to utilize during missions and fill out the empty spaces of the Normandy. The problem however, is that for the entire game, most characters do nothing and in terms of story, they aren’t given that much screentime. Mass Effect 3 aims to bring back all of the (surviving) characters of the series but will limit the amount of playable ones."

Concerning the weapons and gameplay, Game Rant's screenshots can be seen at this link.

"For those who haven’t been keeping up to date on the story and plot details of ME3, let us remind you that Shepard won’t just be dealing with random mercenary groups this time around, but highly trained and highly deadly Cerberus operatives. The new enemies will be changing the pace of the game considerably, with BioWare already promising far more fast-paced shooting and melee combat.
While the screenshots can only give a sense of that speed, we don’t have any actual gameplay footage, so they’ll have to do. Even in these brief glimpses of combat, it’s blatantly clear that the combat will be far more dangerous.
Aside from offering another look at the Cerberus Assassins and Commandos that will be tracking Shepard across the galaxy, these Mass Effect 3 gameplay screenshots clearly show that the moment to moment combat of the game could be vastly more expanded than fans may expect. With the addition of customized weapons and powerful melee attacks, players may feel far more involved in each skirmish, as opposed to sitting on the sidelines."

Also, rumors were started ages ago about a movie possibly in the works. A movie would make it officially a comic book movie. All of this info and more can be found by Google, and the CBM search bar.

And before you ask...yes the game WAS delayed. That trailer is offically out-of-date. They delayed the game so they could have extra time to fix it. The official statement said they wanted it to be the "biggest and boldest".

I would love a movie based directly off the games but people are always bitching that it would ruin the experience because it wouldn't be their shepard.

What most people don't realize is that the default shepard is a male paragon soldier, i for one would love to see commander shepard and the crew of the normandy in a live action space epic.

and i really hope with that extra time they put in multiplayer because that would be awesome.

Commander Shepard FTW

This has to be one of the BEST games ever, however I dont think a movie would work once the studios get there hands on it, better keep it in the gaming franchise as games designers have more creative freedom than the writers in films

@GrandWrex -- Yeah, that's also why a 'Fable' movie would be difficult to pull off as well. You have to use the default look, and the default "good guy" actions. Which, there's no problem with that, but ubergeeks who are immature wouldn't like it :)

Mass Effect would make a totally badass movie. It would be epic on a Watchmen or The Dark Knight scale.
