VIDEO GAMES: MODERN WARFARE 3 Beats AVATAR's $1 Billion Sales Record

In 2009, James Cameron's 3D epic Avatar set records when it reached the $1 billion milestone in just 17 days. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has now surpassed that to become the fastest-selling piece of entertainment ever.

The following press release has been issued today revealing that hit video game Modern Warfare 3 has nabbed Avatar's record of being the the fastest-selling piece of entertainment, reaching the $1 billion mark in only 16 days. The full details are all below, but just to put it into context for you, the video game sold 6.5 million copies during its first 24 hours on sale in North America and the UK alone. Do you think any of the 2012 comic book movies will beat this financial milestone?

Santa Monica, CA- December 12, 2011 – Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare™ 3 crossed the $1 billion mark in sales since its launch on November 8, 2011, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information. Highlighting the trend of interactive entertainment gaining a greater hold of audiences worldwide, the game achieved this milestone in just 16 days, eclipsing the record set in 2009 by the feature film "Avatar," which reached the $1 billion milestone in 17 days.

While 2011 box office revenue is on the decline – down 4 percent this year at $9.4 billion, compared with $9.8 billion in 2010 — the number of people purchasing and participating in gaming is on the rise, with no sign of slowing.¹ With more than 30 million gamers, the Call of Duty community now exceeds the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.

¹According to boxofficemojo.com and PricewaterhouseCoopers’Global Entertainment and Media Outlook

Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.

Call of Duty® as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences are now valuing interactive experiences over passive experiences.

Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like "Star Wars", "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings" and the National Football League (NFL) that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.

Our Call of Duty Elite is one of the fastest growing new online service ever with more than six million players registered since its launch November 8, 2011 and over one million premium subscriptions sold to date. By comparison, the premium subscription services of Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM and Xbox® LIVE®, each reached one million paid subscribers after approximately one year.

"Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre. Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "And while the franchise continues to set records, our fans still seem to want more, demonstrated by our record setting start on Call of Duty Elite. We are committed to helping everyone connect, compete and improve their game, Call of Duty style."

First Person Shooters are a dime a dozen these days. I can barely tell one from the other. The only FPS franchise worth owning is Half-Life!

At a fraction the price the movie, dvd, rentals and rights for broadcast will outdo the game by a mile. And that's at a fraction the price of the game.

Btw, did I say it was at a fraction the price of the game

Why is this news? This game is for kids, of course it's gonna sell well, BF3 is WAY better than this MW2.0 garbage. My money's always going to EA.

$60 a person versus $6-8 a person, for a totally different type of product. Yeah, I could see that comparison. UGH.

I wish this wasnt so. MW3 has a load of issues, and it's not the best COD release we've seen - but since it's a franchise, people are lining up like lemmings for it.

At about 60 bucks a pop that means that roughly 16,666,666 people bought the game, which is impressive but no where near as impressive as the 100,000,000 people who saw Avatar in order to make that billion. So while it's as great feat for a game it's really not in the same league as a movie like Avatar.

I've noticed that most of the the people that bash MW3 are the ones who aren't very good at it. I stopped playing the storyline in COD games right after WAW because of the lack of 4 player co-op, which is what I'm really into. Zombies is the bomb diggity and is why I bought Black Ops. MW3 IS pretty much a DLC of MW2 which is why so many people buy it. Haters gonna hate, but why bash some that's made a billion dollars? It's like saying 30million people are dumb. I would normally agree with that and add a few hundred million more if I wasn't one of the ones that owns it. I bet if it had light sabers and wizards with magic balls fanboys would be praising this game as the redemption of modern gaming.

And Avatar was a 7.5 out of 10 at best. It made a grip cause of 3D. The three times I've watched it I've fallen asleep during the part he first gets to know the tribe..... The last samurai but with blue aliens..... White fang with floating rocks.... It's been done before and all will be done again.

@rodimus9 Actually im pretty damn good at it i was Ranked in the top 20 players in the world at one point during MW2 mainly because along with most FPS they have all been pretty much the same since "doom"!! The only time i will play these games now is if i have a killer hangover and don't want to use my brain!!

Such a shame. Battlefield 3 is far superior in every way imaginable.

CoD has become the Madden of FPS's. Same game every year, and people continue to buy it.

At least Battlefield brings something new to the table with every release.

Again, stop buying these half assed CoD games and go buy a real game...Battlefield 3!

CorndogBurglar - 12/13/2011, 8:49 AM
Also, yeah, comparing a video game's sales to a movie's sales is kinda dumb. You might as well compare CoD's sales with hamburger sales from McDonald's. They're two totally different products and VERY different prices...

@ theamazingbatman, I assume he put this on here because most cbm lovers are also interested in gaming.? But, yeah..the comparison is apples and oranges. As a player of the game I have to say it is nothing better than a map pack of previous games.Graphics pale in comparison to battlefield, but people love familiarity.
