Last Week's "10 Must Haves..." Can Be Viewed Here

After Man of Steel became a huge box office success a DC Cinematic Universe is inevitable, but in order to have a Cinematic Universe, you must have more than one Superhero. I have done two of these articles and so far I have covered a Green Lantern reboot and a Batman reboot, but now I send my focus on someone different and not a reboot at all. One character who has been calling for a feature film for quite some time now is DC’s only female powerhouse, Wonder Woman. But the question that has been thrown around Hollywood for decades is “How do you make a Wonder Woman movie?” and here’s how you do it!

1. Respect The Character

Wonder Woman is one of DC’s best characters and one of the best female characters in all of fiction. Her story is both unique and diverse and still having a fantastic puncher. Admittedly I am not the biggest Wonder Woman fan in fact I have never read a Wonder Woman comic book. So I am probably the worst person to be writing this, but with a little thing called “the internet” I now know a lot (I think). If Warner Bros’ want to make a successful Wonder Woman movie they must respect the character as much as a movie studio can. The worst thing Warner Bros’ could do with Wonder Woman is to make a movie about a character that is completely different from the source material millions of people grew up with. I understand changing a few things about the character, but don’t change everything… I repeat do not change everything.

2. Warner Bros’ Should Be Confident With The Film

This is what separates Green Lantern from Man Of Steel. Warner Bros’ were incredibly confident with Man Of Steel and look how successful that was. While on the other hand, WB had no confidence in 2011’s Green Lantern. The marketing for the film sucked and you could see how the studio didn’t really care. If Warner Bros’ want to have another successful franchise with Wonder Woman the studio would really have to have confidence in the film. If Warner Bros’ does not care about the film, then why would the general audience care?

3. Find A Director Who Cares About The Character

This is the most crucial part of the film. If you can’t find a director who cares for the character, we’d have another Green Lantern. In comic book movies nowadays, the directors and staff behind the film usually care a lot about the character they are making the film on. Look at Sam Raimi, he had a Spider-Man painting in his bedroom when he was younger and over the course of his three Spidey flicks, his love for the wall-crawler was evident. Wonder Woman is the most popular female superhero, so it won’t be that hard to find a director who loves the character. One director I have thought of directing a Wonder Woman film for a long time is Sofia Coppola, she is one of the best female directors out there right now. Although she has never directed a comic book movie, I feel as though she will eventually and Wonder Woman might be the perfect one.

4. Update The Character

Wonder Woman was created in the 1940’s. Around that time women didn’t really have the power they have nowadays. You’d never see a girl in politics or running a country in the 40’s, but now it’s a common thing. So for Wonder Woman we have to make the character important and be true to the comics, while updating her for a new audience. Back in the original comics, Wonder Woman was a secretary for the Justice League Of America; yes that’s right a secretary. The more recent Wonder Woman comics have updated the character and still they are a fun read, which should translate well from comic to screen.

5. Wonder Woman Kills

One badass thing about Wonder Woman is that she kills, that’s the thing that sets her apart from the rest of The League, except the fact she is a woman… Anyway, Wonder Woman is a killer she isn’t looking for truth and justice she is looking to clean the streets and the way she does it, is kill. Gods trained Wonder Woman; she has been trained as though every situation is war. She kills for the greater good. She doesn’t battle criminals to bring them to justice, she battles them and kills them, and she is a killing machine.

6. She Is Confortable With Her Body And Sexuality

Wonder Woman is not like any other female on the face of the Earth, she is confortable with her body and sexuality. Most females nowadays get depressed from being “fat” or not having a boyfriend. Wonder Woman doesn’t give a shit about any of that, I think that’s something that females’ need. While us men have multiple superheroes to look up to, females need someone to look up to and Wonder Woman is the perfect superhero to look up to. Having a hero like Wonder Woman exist in our modern world would help so many girls, the way Wonder Woman is so strong and cares so little for her look and social life is something that females need. If Wonder Woman were to have a film, a lot of these depressed girls would turn to Wonder Woman as their hero and saviour.

7. A Good Villain

Wonder Woman’s rogue gallery sucks. Okay, I’m just putting it out there. Her rogue’s gallery is like Superman’s. The problem with Wonder Woman’s rogue gallery is that there is so much potential for awesomeness, it’s just the villains are made to be so boring. Wonder Woman really has one main villain, Ares. In the first Spider-Man movie, the main villain was Spidey’s greatest foe, the Green Goblin. So for the Wonder Woman movie, why not use Wonder Woman’s most popular villain? Ares is a badass character he has so much potential to be an awesome villain. Ares is a Greek god, so he can defiantly give Wonder Woman a physical challenge as much as a physiological problem. Of course you could throw in a villain who is a female to set up for the sequel or Justice League movie.

8. Costume Can’t Be Slutty

Well don’t say you didn’t see this coming. Wonder Woman’s costume in the comics is… pretty slutty. I mean, it’s sexy and hot but it won’t translate well on the big screen, and we don’t need any female rights people protesting against the movie. The costume in the movie should resemble a costume with long pants, I mean I love the short short look for Wonder Woman, but that’s something that belongs in games and comic books. In a world we Anne Hathaway in a full body suit and Scarlett Johansson in a full body suit with a zip can look hot as hell, I’m sure we can get Wonder Woman looking sexy without looking like a slut. I saw an argument the other day, where one user said "does that mean Olympians are sluts because of their short uniform?" Well, there's a difference between an Olympian and a goddess who is about to go to battle and could die.

9. Why Should The Audience Watch It?

Okay, so a Wonder Woman film is very unpredictable. It could either be a huge success or it could be the biggest failure of all time. Okay maybe not the last one, but the film could back fire. For Warner Bros’ and DC they need to ask themselves what would make the audience even want to see this movie? I mean a Woman who fights things, you could just watch MMA and not pay anything, but why does the audience want to watch this film? Why does the audience want to see this movie? Well, you have to give them a hook. Why did people see Man Of Steel? Because it was the start of a DC Universe… and the trailers looked badass. If WB want another success like Man Of Steel they need to give the audience a reason to go see it.

10. No Gina Carano

Alas we come to another “No inset actor’s name here”; one actress I am against playing Wonder Woman in the DC Cinematic Universe is Gina Carano. It’s not anything personal between Carano and myself it’s just that I don’t see Carano as Wonder Woman. Carano is huge, she is massive, and if you see the comics/cartoons Wonder Woman is not a massive figure. I mean she is quite slim. I have three actresses who I believe could play Wonder Woman.

Paula Patton:
The first is Paula Patton who was seen in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, now if we were to see a live action Wonder Woman, she would most likely look like she did in Injustice: Gods Among Us, Paula has that sexy but fierce look that Wonder Woman needs.

Adrianne Palicki:
Another actress I would pick is Adrianne Palicki, she was cast as Wonder Woman in the cancelled show from 2011, and nowadays she is hot. She was in the second G.I Joe movie this year and kicked ass in that. She seems to have a love for the character and would play a wonderful Wonder Woman if given the right script and direction.

Kate Beckinsale:
The final actress I would pick would be the gorgeous but badass action star, Kate Beckinsale. While Kate is in her late 30’s, last year’s Total Recall proved that she can still handle the action that would be required in order to play Wonder Woman. While all three of these actresses are much better actresses than Gina Carano, it bothers me that people still throw her name into the role as it would be complete and utter nonsense for her to play the role.

..........................................................................................................................................................

Sadly that draws a close to another “10 Must Haves…” you know I’m really enjoying writing these and I hope you guys are enjoying reading them! Now I’m stuck on what I should do next, I have two ideas and I’ll let you guys decide. In the comments below you tell me, either THE FLASH or AQUAMAN. As always you can find me on Twitter, so feel free to start a conversation. So thanks again guys, I’m Khan and I’m out for now!

You may as well have a stick figure as WW. I don't see anything wrong with Carano.

No to any of the actresses named... I would rather have a lesser known prove themselves like an up and coming actress with a theatre background. The same way Tom Hiddleston came to become such an icon, the less recognizable a face the better it is for the character portraying them as you associate the actor with the character instinctively whereas you see someone from one franchise to another you see the person as just another actor but when a lesser known/less mainstream actor/actress takes a role and just nails it and immerses themselves in the character, usually someone with a slight theatre background the character is the the character onscreen and not a recognizable face onscreen portraying a great character ex to prove my point: Joker in TDK, Loki in the MCU and Giovanni Ribsi or Ben Foster in almost anything they have done.

Examples of you seeing the actor portraying the character more than the character being the character onscreen are the following examples:(no offense I love the portrayal but many people find it hard to see it as the character)RDJ as Tony Stark (you see RDj playing him but you do not fully see the character despite him adapting the character so greatly), Harrison Ford in ALMOST anything after Indiana Jones or Star Wars..., Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow, etc.

I hope I got my point across. I would prefer for a much lesser known, unfamiliar face with a preferably theatre background were to take the role of Wonder Woman. I retrack any previous fancasting statements of who should play WW cause I reevaluated all the choices and the choices above and feel that it would be better for it to be someone like I described to give to the performance and do to the character what Tom Hiddlestone did for Loki or Heath Ledger did for The Joker.

The Amazonians would wear battle skirts.
This suit looks fine to me, just add a bit more metal and a few changes and it would look perfect. It does not look slutty in the slightest...

Something along the lines of the warrior princess XENA would be great make it look more Ancient Greek like and it would be perfect. P.S. the greeks and Romans were obsessed with flashy colours for everything from their buildings to their statures and sculptures. They would paint everything with bright, warm, vivid, flashy colours so WW's costume being red, white, blue and gold actually is pretty accurate to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome

Funny, you kinda contradict yourself when you say that she's "comfortable with her body and sexuality", which is true, but then you turn around and say that her costume is "slutty", that she can't look like a slut. The [frick] does a slut look like? I digress.
Sure, her outfit is revealing, but as I've said before, when drawn with dignity, she can still look like a total BAMF. However, the costume is pretty dated and silly. I agree that it does need an update.

Also, how about unknowns for WW? Thor was successful with that. I agree, no Carano, but also no Beckinsale (I mean- really?) and no Olivia Wilde (can't believe people are actually thinking of her as WW). We need an actress with the acting chops and physique. If Hollywood can find good actors with awesome physiques for Superman, Thor and Cap, they can find one for Wonder Woman.

Im liking Aquaman more in recent years but I dont think he should be in "phase 1". Go with Flash Barry if you use Hal, Wally if you use John.

The League should only have 6 members for its first movie: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman (The Trinity), Green Lantern, Flash and Martian Manhunter.

Really enjoying these "10 Must Haves"! Nice work..

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!

:)

MAC:Don't the Olympic competitors wear their outfits to help them, run faster, be more agile, that sort of thing? Doesn't Wonder Woman wear her costume so that boys can drool why reading her comics? Lets say for the sake of argument that no one cared about how it made her sexually appealing. It is still the worst battle suit ever lol. Arms, upper chest and legs are all exposed. Wouldn't a land of warriors shun this outfit , as its makes anyone who wears it a liability? I still think it needs to be updated.

Good List but she shouldn't be a murder kind of killer. She should only kill if its really necessary to save other lives. I would rather see a Wonder Woman movie than any other DC character actually. Swamp Thing an the Flash would be awesome.

Great write up, solid points and I'd love to see them characterised on screen!
I feel the only point to be adjusted would be the Amazonian attire, for whilst agree Wonder Woman shouldn't be overly sexualised, I don't feel an overly armoured look would justify her on screen. As much as she represents many values of feminism and equality, she is smoking hot.
Despite inaccurate depictions in films like '300', if WB/DC do their homework, they would find that the ancient greek battle armour for men would traditionally be along the lines of a breast and back plate, a helmet (often plumed), shin guards (greaves) and forearm bracers and sandals or boots, as well as a leather or clothen skirt (sometimes depicted as the bottom of their tunic), with additional equipment such as a sword, dagger and shield (seen below). The most relevant depiction of this armour can be found in the film 'Troy' (seen below).

In this fashion, it would not be too obscure to imagine that the Amazon's battle armour would be of a similar style, so I believe that Wonder Woman's on screen costume should fall mid-way between that of the traditional male armour and her comic depictions.

On the point of the costume. With Diana growing up on Themyscira (I never know how to spell it) she wouldnt feel out of place wearing something the rest of the world found sexy. She has an accelerated healing factor so any injuries she takes wouldnt last long. Wolverine fights mutants, monsters and mechs in a tank top all the time. I dont see the problem. I agree with an update but not because of it being too slutty. For suit ideas see @TheSonOfKryptons comment.

I don't see the problem with Carano. All the fancasts do with Wonder Woman, you cast these supermodel looking women, and warrior stature last. You can't have a stick playing a warrior. Gina can pull off natural beauty, but she also looks like she can kick your ass.

If not Casino, I gotta say Erin Cummings. I've only seen her a bit in Spartacus and in interviews, but she seems qualified.

I was pro Carano for Wondy, but I'm really digging Paula Patton for the character now too.

WB/DC's biggest hurtle to jump is finding the right combo for actress of the lead role and a director that actually cares for the character, everthing else should translate very well to film as THOR has proven.

If anything this will be easier to translate to film than a movie like THOR, seeing as most of the world is familiar with Greek mythology versus Norse mythology

Would like to see a Wonder Woman movie happen (outfit similar to the one in Injustice Gods Among Us) but, chances are they won't risk it until Marvel releases Ms.Marvel or something. I mean hell, that's why we're getting Justice League right? Marvel did The Avengers and it got success. Not trying to be a dick... I'm just saying

Antje Traue is Wonder Woman. She has displayed the best for an action actress that was on par or even surpass the men in MOS including Henry Cavill. She sold her lines well and even did great by just the way she walked and looked even badder and didn't have to say a word. Also she showed even more rage by displaying her emotional side when she saw krypton exploded and you she her crying, she sold that so well too.

Some people say she cant play it cause she was Faora but I totally disagree when she can totally different and she is willing to transform her body for the role.

She does not even look like herself in this one

I want a woman to play Wonder Woman. Not little beauty women to act like a woman. We need someone to embody all those aspect into be badass in the walking, talking, posture, fighting, still be beautiful enough to capture her sexiness, and enough range when she has something emotional happen, she can display it to were you can feel for her and Antje has done all those so well and better than any actress I have seen yet.

@Batmaniac
That is exactly how Wonder Woman body should be or at least something close to that. Have to find an actress that is willing to put their body in a transformation like that to add muscle tone.

@Crossbone
That would be true but they did try a Justice League movie before the writers strike so no they are not doing it just because Avengers was successful.

At least Marvel is trying. DC cant do anything noteworthy without Nolan and Legendary. I hope im proven wrong in the near future. I want a good GL movie along with Flash and Wonder Woman on the big screen.

Good article man !! For the costume, my choice would be like you the pant or the squirt would work too. On the killing a kinda agree but not always, she not a emotionless killing machine, she kill when she judge it necessary.

For the cast, my pick would be Emily Blunt. She just need to go true the same training Antje Traue went for MOS and she would be perfect.

@BatsFan
You made a great choice there too. I like Emily Blunt for the role. After my first choice Antje Traue, Blunt would be a more ideal choice for her at this time. She is a great actress. Agree she needs to do some training just like Traue did to make it more believable that she is a warrior that is about fighting and her body should display that.

So now there is only Traue and Blunt for the role for me.

They'll have to give her battle armor like Faora had in Man of Steel otherwise people wont be able to take the look of character seriously. Furthermore the actress who plays Wonder Woman has to look credible, some size 0-3 supermodel aint gonna work and isn't going to look credible and believable at all, womans got to have some damn meat on her bones and not look like a damn stick insect cough cough Zoe Saldana cough cough. Patton would be my choice.

As much as I would love to see a Black Panther movie its controversial and not one of Marvels top tier heroes. They are putting out 2 movies a year from MCU and at least one from outside. DC/WB might drop one a year. The comparison is still not valid. I think DC has the more profitable heroes too. Im not saying that one is better than the other but only that I wish WB would either drop DC or get off their @$$. Its like they are holding some of my favorite heroes hostage or something.

This is a great article. You have my unconditional praise, and believe you me, that is extremely difficult to get.

People need to get off of Antje Traue. She was without a doubt, my favorite part of Man of Steel - both creepy, beautiful, and strong. I had a hi-res photo of her hooking up the atmospheric helmet to Lois as my wallpaper for at least a week. But she's Faora, and she's got a thick German accent. It's a sexy accent, but that's not Wonder Woman.

Gina Carano - I'm not criticizing her figure, her facial features - she's beautiful, and she could DEFINITELY pass off as Diana if she cosplayed. But she's not an actress. She's an MMA fighter who likes to do her stunt work, and not much else. Haywire, unfortunately, is what we all have to go on, and all it told me was that she likes to get violent.

At the moment, I would encourage people to stay away from trying to find a proper fancast for her. It's less the actress and more of the direction that makes all the difference in the world. Is she going to be a warrior or a political symbol? Is she going to be a sex object or a personality? Is she going to be able to make non-fans like her, or will they not be able to get past her objectifying costume?

MAC, you've said it before, and you make a good argument, but Wonder Woman's costume *is* too slutty.

I'm not talking about her legs, I'm referring to her bustier. It is how she's been drawn since the beginning, but the fact of the matter is - her appearance makes her a sex object, even though her character is prone to breaking your finger if you called her one. There's a big difference between confidence and style, and the style in question is one that sets a bad precedent.

You've got all of these male superheroes, and ironically, the only one (other than Bwanna Beast) who shows just as much as Wonder Woman - isn't even human, and is shared between our avatars.

In Avatar, pretty much everyone is 90% naked - but they're blue, furry, and obviously alien.
In the Justice League: Zatanna and Black Canary wear fishnets, black jackets, and a top that either accentuates or reveals a good deal of their ample breasts. Put Wonder Woman's costume up to them.... THEN place them up among the rest of the Justice League, and you clearly have your sex objects.

It is what it is.

I'm more concerned with her personality. It's exactly why I don't want Gina Carano - she doesn't have one, or rather, she can't expand one.

Anyone watch Witches of Eastwick? Old movie, came out the year I was born... stars Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfieffer, and Jack Nicholson. You already know Jack is going to steal the show, but the surprise is just how LEADING and interesting those three actresses make their characters - three single moms in a small town.

I want Wonder Woman to have that kind of quality. To not wait until spoken to, to not abide by socially acceptable behavior, to be unwavering in her curiosity and determination. She needs to be intentionally but unintentionally funny in her interest, in her bludgeoning questions, in her unwillingness (and lack of understanding as to why she would) leave well enough alone. She needs to intimidate men, make women jealous, and keep everyone honest with everything out in the open.
