Wonder Woman 1984 isn't receiving a traditional theatrical release, so whatever it earns at the box office will need to be taken with a grain of salt. In other words, if the sequel grosses less than the first film, it will be important to remember that it's because of the pandemic and that simultaneous HBO Max release (not because this follow-up is a "flop").
In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins confirmed that she has a story for her threequel, but that it's likely to change thanks to the madness of 2020.
"I actually came up with a story, and Geoff Johns and I beat out an entire story for Wonder Woman 3 that we were super fired up about. But I’ve never felt this way before as much as I do now," the filmmaker explains. "I don’t think I’m doing it next, and so I sort of have to wait and see where we are in the world. It’s interesting."
"What I wanted to talk about in this film was very prescient to what I was feeling, and what you were feeling, was coming. So now? I’m not sure, So much has changed in the world. I still love the story that we came up with," Jenkins continues. "I’m sure that parts of it would come over to it. But I’m trying to say, ‘Don’t decide.’ Don’t fall in love with anything. See ‘What would Wonder Woman do now?’ What are you craving Wonder Woman to do in this world?"
There was only a three year gap between Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 (and it would have been two without that first big delay), but it's looking like we'll have much longer to wait for Wonder Woman 3.
What the film will look like is obviously going to depend what happens when Jenkins returns to the drawing board.
