WONDER WOMAN 2: Upcoming Sequel Will Have Select Sequences Shot With IMAX Film Cameras

In a recent earnings call, an IMAX exec revealed that director Patty Jenkins will shoot portions of Wonder Woman 2 with IMAX cameras, creating a truly larger-than-life experience for moviegoers.

Anticipation surrounding Wonder Woman 2 is already high following the commercial and critical success of the first film, and now fans have another reason to get excited. During a recent IMAX earnings call, just now starting to make the rounds on the internet, it was revealed that director Patty Jenkins will be shooting a portion of the upcoming sequel with IMAX cameras.

IMAX exec Greg Foster revealed:

“I’m excited to announce that Wonder Woman 2, which comes out in the second half of 2019, will be shot with IMAX film cameras in select sequences. This Warner Brothers DC production, the sequel of the global juggernaut from 2017, is directed by Patti Jenkins and produced by Chuck Roven and Rebecca Oakley Roven. And we couldn’t be more excited that IMAX has been chosen to be a part of the film’s design.”

Although Wonder Woman was released in IMAX 3D format, it wasn't actually filmed in IMAX. Stretching the film to IMAX format rather than actually shooting with IMAX cameras is a common, more cost effective technique used by studios; however, it results in lesser picture and sound quality. Granted, it still looks amazing to see your favorite superheroes on the expansive screen, but filming directly with IMAX cameras will surely be a step up.

Although parts of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises films were shot in IMAX, fans will get an even better idea with Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War (due out April 27), as that is the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

Wonder Woman 2 opens in theaters November 1, 2019.

@Solarkalel85 - It's not real IMAX though, it's an ARRI branded with IMAX so it's a digital camera as opposed to an actual 70mm print, so it doesn't really have the quality, the detail or the large aspect ratio. Basically the IMAX brand has now been diluted with the introduction of what's essentially a very good digital camera.

@Solarkalel85 - Nope, and it's not the same camera as this one will be shot with, nor the one Nolan's films were shot with, either. The camera used to shoot IW is a digital camera that have already been used in a lot of major blockbusters, over the years, most of which you've probably already seen.

The way IMAX have marketed IW as being "the first time a Hollywood feature film will be shot only using Imax cameras and its exclusive aspect ratio", is because they've formed a partnership with Arri, the company that makes that particular digital camera. This has allowed IMAX to stick their sticker on it and call it a "customised" version of the camera. It's basically branded as an "IMAX" camera. Nothing special.

Please take a look at my reddit post. It's very informative, and it'll explain a lot more:

@Solarkalel85 - Trust me, you would know the difference. 70mm on a real IMAX screen is unmistakable. I have a harder time distinguishing between digital IMAX and regular movies.

@Solarkalel85

Dunkirk, Batman v Superman, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, I think some of Transformers 3.

I’m probably missing a few. I think The Force Awakens had the Millenium Falcon escape shot with IMAX film.

I remember hearing the same thing with Black Panther and can't remember what scenes were actually IMAX. So far the only scene that felt like it really expanded was the airport sequence in CIVIL WAR

@OmegaDaGrodd

Black Panther’s arrival in Wakanda was IMAX. Maybe the car chase scene too.

I do wish Marvel would utilize film a little more. There’s quite a difference between 70mm IMAX and the IMAX Arri Alexa.

@regularmovieguy - Shooting an entire blockbuster movie in 70mm IMAX is extremely impractical, especially a Marvel Studios one. The major problem is, the way studios make their movies, they don't tend to shoot a lot of their action sequences on location, nor do these scenes have much practical effects. It'd be a huge waste shooting one or two people, in front of a large green screen backdrop, in a sound stage, with these cameras wouldn't it?

What the studios should be doing, if they ever want to utilise these cameras, is to prepare and plan for it, beforehand. Also, they'll need to be willing to pay for whatever needs to be done in post, as well as the printing and scanning process. If they're willing to do all that, then they can prepare for what the particular scenes they'd like to shoot would involve. Though, even if they wanted to, sometimes it may just be impossible for the scenes to be shot with IMAX cameras, because most of the scenes would need to be achieved with VFX.

I would prefer the scenes involved nudity, but I will settle for action scenes. Well, I mean a proper sort of action scene, not someone getting action... They should just involve nudity.
