DARK PHOENIX Concept Art Features A Fiery Jean Grey, Alternate Skrull Designs, And Plenty Of Spaceships

In this new wave of concept art for Dark Phoenix, we get to see a far more fiery take on Jean Grey, a variety of alien designs and landscapes, and even get to board the Skrull warship. Check it out...

Originally a two-part movie, Dark Phoenix underwent some major changes when Fox recoiled at the idea of committing to that, and when the finished product was rejected by studio bosses and test audiences alike, the entire final act was reshot. What was supposed to be an epic, cosmic X-Men finale turned into a ride on a train and the Skrulls became the D'Bari.

Now, new concept art from the Marvel movie has been revealed by some of the artists who worked on it, and it's clear that it was once going to be a very, very different type of adventure.

As well as alien planets, we get to see a fiery Phoenix who looked like she stepped straight out of the pages of the comic books and a glimpse inside the Skrull warship (not to mention different takes on the aliens themselves). While this wouldn't have necessarily made Simon Kinberg's movie better, it's clear that he once had much bigger ideas which didn't come to fruition.

These pieces are really revealing, so hit the "View List" button below to check them out!

@dragon316 - idk, for me, apoc was way better (still a bad film). The dialogue here was the worst ive ever seen. 'Your family is your weakness' - 'no, my family is my strength'. Or 'who are you?' - 'the real question is - who are you?'. And lets not forget 'shes not jean anymore' - 'no, she is still our friend'. Crappiest writing ever.

@dragon316 - In the final film, they are named D'Bari, after the species Jean killed in the comic. But that was only after Disney bought Fox and reshoots; originally, they were straight up Skrulls.

@DalekCraigWasson - err you do know that reshoots were completed before Disney bought fox right?

@DalekCraigWasson - Knowing Fox, and backed up by these various concept works, I sincerely doubt that they were ever “straight up Skrulls”.

Named Skrulls? Sure. But I have doubts that they changed much at all during the reshoots beyond dropping the name.

@CaptainAmerica - except that's not true reshoots were in September last year.

@Chewtoy - Tye Sheridan confirmed they were Skrulls when he shot his ending. I agree not much was changed beyond the design and dropping the name, but while not Captain Marvel accurate, I think "straight up Skrulls" still applies as they would have been reptilian shapeshifters named Skrulls.

@sickboy76 - you’re right it wasn’t announced till October but it was done before then. Marvel was already telling Fox what to do even though they’ve said they had nothing to do with it. Definitely not a coincidence that they were gonna use Skrulls but then changed it last minute, they were also gonna use Skrull Queen and changed that. The ending was also said to be too similar to Captain Marvel.

@CaptainAmerica - if you think Disney would be stupid enough to commit collusion over one film that would jeopardise a billion dollar sale you're crazy!

@sickboy76 - if you think they’d get caught you’re the one who’s crazy lol. I guess it’s just a huge coincidence then huh?

@CaptainAmerica - alien invasion, spaceship, all powerful character attacking them. It writes itself.

@sickboy76 - exactly, so why change the name and look of the aliens? What exactly do they do in the movie? They shape shift, hmmmmmm. Lol so the shape shifting alien race from the film was changed, the 3rd act was changed, and you think it was just that Fox felt like spending more money for no reason?

It definitely wouldn’t have saved the film, but I feel the lack of actual Phoenix effects was a poor decision. It’s odd considering they were originally fire effects but they changed them to look more ambiguously cosmic. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but if a character is called Phoenix I expect a lot of fire.

It’s really amazing to me that Fox could allow their anchor comic book franchise to go this far off the rails.

@Chewtoy - I would make sense if the X-Men movies were Bay Transformers-level popular, but why keep a creative team on when the trajectory is decidedly down like that? Everyone knew that Kinberg was a damp squib, yet he just kept amassing more and more control. Everyone could see the path toward a bigger box office was embracing comic aesthetics like Marvel and Miller's Deadpool did, but they just kept laser focused on Singerized generic costumes and civilian clothes.

Fox was a big part of what made the X-Men so popular, and they did it with this:

...Not with this...

Yet... here we are in 20-[frick]ing-19...

People were really so ready to give up on Fox-Men that Fox screwed up in the *EXACT* way everyone predicted they would and most of us don't even remember it happening until these articles pop up
