In the following interview with HeyUGuys, Matthew Vaughn sets the record straight in regards to his comments about Christopher Nolan, making it clear that he's a big fan of The Dark Knight Trilogy director, but that he still believes the likes of Spider-Man and Superman should not follow the same dark route as Batman. Talk of Nolan never winning an Oscar then turns to the Kingsman: The Secret Service helmer's love of Guardians of the Galaxy and his disappointment that the movie has received little in the way of mainstream awards attention. Nothing about GOTG is Oscar worthy. As much as I enjoyed it I'm not delusional about it

Batman can be dark and gritty....He's a dark hero who lives in a dark citt. The tone of his world is dark. Spider a d superman are more hopeful heroes. They epitomize light and hope. Daredevil is like batman, dark, Luke cage a little, Green Arrow as well

Well... I love First Class.. for me this movie is the best movie of the franchise...
is pop, has drama, humor, action... everything a super-hero movie have to be... for me, of course.

Days of Future Past is huge step back for me... all this drama queen thing that Bryan Singer like...

GOTG doesn't really need any awards after all the money they made, honestly. Their success with it is reward enough. Nolan deserves an Oscar, though the Academy usually gives precedence to biographical/true-story films and in general movies that are far more grounded in reality. I'm surprised Inception was even considered way back when

Every superhero is tragic but some use that tragedy and Transform it into something different t. Superman and spiderman filter that tragedy into hope. They're losses came with a level of support and care from adoptive parents who raised them and loved them. Always supporting them. No offense to alfred, but Bruce left and traveled the world alone always fueled by vengeance

Great interview. Haven't really listened to Vaughn in an interview before, but it seems like he gets the craft and has his head on his shoulders. Appreciate that he followed his gut, let someone else (Singer) take the helm on DOFP, and pursued his passion with Kingsman.

Completely agree with him on Superman and Spiderman. Everyone has tragedy occur in their lives, but that doesn't mean it has to dictate them being "dark". You don't have to be happy all the time to still be a bright beacon of hope.

@Christuffer Filmmakers (or at least those who truly love and care for the craft) don't care solely about the money; they want to be recognized for their accomplishments by peers and critics, as well. It's not that without the accolades GOTG can't be deemed successful; it's just that Vaughn thinks there was a level of achievement that Gunn reached with GOTG that deserved more credit than it got from a film-making standpoint.

There is a large proportion of films nominated for Best Picture that are dramas and/or based on true stories. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes you wonder if the tone or subject matter of a movie automatically creates a positive or negative bias about its merits among the academy. Well-crafted art can take many shapes.

How long are people gonna call GotG a 'dance-off' to defeat the villain?
It was a distraction to help defeat the villain, sheesh...haha
