In the article over at Deadline about 20th Century Fox production president, it has also been revealed that studio closed the deal with director Matthew Vaughn to helm a sequel to his criticially acclaimed film X-Men: First Class:

"Fox has just closed a deal with Matthew Vaughn to come back and direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class, with Simon Kinberg writing the script and Bryan Singer back as producer."

Many thought this won't happen and that Vaughn will move on and direct something new, but I'm really glad he decided to come back. And even though the production on the first film was rushed, Vaughn and the whole cast managed to make a really good film. Hopefully we will get more updates soon. Simon Kinberg is writing the script and Bryan Singer will also be back as producer.

waiting for someone to say "If it isn't the original five [from the comics] don't bother."

Loved the first one, hope the second is as good or better!

A good movie starts with the script and Kinberg wrote X-Men: The Last Stand. However, he also wrote Sherlock Holmes so I will remain cautiously optimistic. Say what you will Jane Goldman is a fantastic writer.

Thought First Class was dreadful. The most infantile, self-indulgent, clap trap I've ever seen.

Doesnt really matter if he wrote X3, there were way too many things wrong with that film you can't just blame it on the script. Vaughn and Goldman will probably be doing re-writes anyways. All that matters is that Vaughn is returning and Singer is still producing. Just make sure you get the main cast back and it should be epic.

Awesome sauce.

@Ryguy that's way too soon, IMO. I say shoot this next year and have a summer 2014 release date.

Meh. I am so tired of Magneto. Another First Class without the First Class? I'll shut off the brain and rent it when it comes out like I did the first one. Decent flick...awful comic book adaptation.

They keep bringing back that hack Bryan Singer to interject his moron-vision of the X-Men Universe....who is he blowing at Marvel? He's terrible. He was the one who decided not to use the original first class in First Class. He just takes all of the X-Men and villians on index cards and throws them on a table and then picks a few random ones and says "use these"...its stupid. I wish he would get hit by a car or something so we can see Vaugh do the movie right.

Sounds like they're going with ideas that came up from the first film...that means none of the 'original five'.

And I guess Darwin wont be back either - no room for him in their master plan.
