In a press release today, 20th Century Fox has just announced that Mark Millar has been tapped as the studio's go-to-consultant for their Marvel comic book film properties such as Wolverine, Deadpool, The X-Men and Fantastic Four. Read the press release below.

PRESS RELEASE

Marking an expanded commitment to some of its most important franchises, Twentieth Century Fox has brought on comics superstar Mark Millar to serve as a creative consultant on the studio’s upcoming projects based on Marvel Comics properties.

Millar wrote several celebrated Marvel books such as The Ultimates, Civil War and Wolverine: Old Man Logan, before moving on to found Millarworld (millarworld.tv), where he continues to develop existing film franchise titles Wanted and Kick-Ass, as well as newer comic properties The Secret Service, Superior, and Nemesis — the latter also in development at Fox. Millar will work with Fox on developing new avenues for its "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" tentpoles.

Commented TCF production president Emma Watts: “We are excited to be working with Mark. In addition to his groundbreaking Marvel work, he is simply one of the most original voices in comics today and will be an invaluable resource to us and to our filmmakers as we look for fresh opportunities to innovate within our shared Marvel universe."

Upcoming for the studio is THE WOLVERINE, starring Hugh Jackman, directed by James Mangold; X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, helmed by Matthew Vaughn; and a reboot of “FANTASTIC FOUR, to be directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle).

“As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic-books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it's a unique combination of both,” stated Millar. “I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema's biggest talents. James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn's one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone-call I've ever had.”

About Mark Millar
Mark Millar is the writer of Civil War, Marvel's biggest-selling series of the fifteen years, Ultimate X-Men, Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Spider-Man, Ultimate Fantastic Four and The Ultimates (described by Time magazine in 2010 as the best comic series of the decade). His Millarworld line of comics boasts a roster of creator-owned books such as Wanted, turned into a blockbuster movie starring Angelina Jolie; Kick-Ass, which starred Nicolas Cage; and Nemesis, which Fox is presently developing as a theatrical feature. Kick-Ass 2 is currently filming in London and Toronto, starring Jim Carrey and Chris Mintz-Plasse and Universal is also developing his War Heroes series with Mike DeLuca producing. The Secret Service, co-created with Watchmen legend Dave Gibbons and X-Men First Class director Matthew Vaughn, is also currently indevelopment. In his native UK, he's the editor of CLiNT magazine, an advisor on film to the Scottish government and managing director of his film and television company Millarworld Productions."

While i severely dislike Mark Millar, i think it's a good idea to get somebody so well acquainted with comics on board with the Movies.

TRAITOR! :P Just kidding. Seriously though he did write some good stuff, so I'm not terribly against this, but I don't like Fox still. Even if they hired Joss Whedon I still wouldn't approve of their films.

They need to make a deal with Marvel so that they can at least have creative control over them so we can actually have some good adaptions, no I need to correct that, at the best Fox could make good adaptions. What we need is fantastic adaptions! And I doubt Fox no matter what will ever do that.

Fox has a shared Marvel universe?

He may not be Whedon, but he has just as much influence on the Marvel movies now as anyone else

I'm ok with this idea. After a few movies, perhaps he'll be on board with the idea that they can work with Disney here and there to share some characters back and forth to tell stories.

The X-men universe is shitty, don't know how they will make another FF movie after they screwed up Galactus, Daredevil won't be all that successful, and I say just give up on the Deadpool movie

Honestly I hate the bullshit that Millar spouts constantly but I can't deny I have enjoyed a lot of his work I absolutely loved Old Man Logan and Red Son. They could have hired some one worse like Rob Liefield. No mention of Daredevil so I am guessing that more or less confirms Fox letting the rights revolve back to Marvel then.

well if it improves fox's comic book adaptions i.e more faithful to the source then i see this as a good thing.

@ TheAlexLynch

wolverine old man logan & civil war are good reads.

I honestly have no idea how there going to make a shared Universe I mean the timeline and shit for X-Men movie is god damn confusing but Vaughn might pull a Star Trek with the FC sequel.

He did do Civil War and clearly, he has a good working relationship with Marvel and understands the characters.. They are publishing all his Millarworld stuff under the Icon name.

What stands out is that part about their "shared marvel universe." Do we have another mcu in the making. With FF and xmen they have some core ingredients for some onslaught. They can also take it to space and have some Kree/shair/skrull space epic. imagine Gladiator vs Ronan, with some sufer for good measure. What am i talking about, this is foxup, and theyll definately fox it up. Unless millar can tame the beast.

I say reboot both and start from scratch. Franklin can link the two franchises. Since it doesnt look like we are ever gonna see scarlet witch or quicksilver in the avengers, maybe we will see them in the fmcu.

i'm glad they're doing this, it shows they're actually committed to getting these movies done properly. and hey, it might mean that its becoming increasingly less likely that we'll ever see these characters in the Avenger's shared MCU, but they may at least lead towards a shared FOX movie universe.
thats a scary thought.
now Warner Bros. just needs to hire Frank Miller or Grant Morrison for this job and i'll be able to rest easier

I'd rather have him over there at Fox then at Marvel Studios where he would try to make Ant Man a wife beating psychopath and Cap a total douche.
Scuzz

He tells the simplest stories and goes for cheap shock value, except it comes across as ridiculous instead. He would fit in perfectly with 90's EXTREME!!. Absolutely no substance.

If you like his writing then you are either 13 years old or are probably not that smart.

also, he is a liar and one arrogant sumbitch.

so in conclusion; Bad move Fox.

I really don't want fox setting up their own universe. The only reason they want to is to make $ and odds are it's going to suck. The only thing it'll succeed in doing is killing the novelty of the REAL Marvel Cinematic Universe.

i have a real love/hate reaction to that guy. mostly hate. yes he has written a few great things, but i don't think i'd ask his opinion about much of anything ever. a little worried here to be honest

i do agree it's a good thing to get a consultant LIKE him moving forward with Marvel's future film/television dynasty

Fox's shared universe?! Ugh.

I wish these properties were back at Marvel already. This is just getting ridiculous...

Good. He'll drive both franchises straight into the ground and make it so Fox will have to sell the rights back to marvel.
BruceLeroy
BruceLeroy - 9/27/2012, 12:42 PM
It's pretty obvious Fox wants to be like Marvel studios.

They never cared about the comic aspect of their films before. Now they're bringing in somebody who worked in comics to oversee their movies like Marvel recently got Joss to do. The writing is on the wall folks. They want some of that Marvel Studios success.

Plus the fact that they actually stated they have a shared Marvel Universe says a lot about their plans going forward. Don't be surprised if we see the Fantastic Four cross paths with the X-Men in the future.

TheAbomination - 9/27/2012, 12:42 PM
Good move. I can definitely see him becoming their Whedon. Fox finally realized that Marvel's Cinematic Universe worked because they gave plenty of creative control to artists who understood and respected the source material. I still wish they would give Marvel Studios the rights to use Galactus and Silver Surfer, but this is a step in the right direction.

The ball's in your court, DC.

I hope WB gets their shit together soon. They need a comicbook geek in their staff like Whedon or Millar. Of course keeping Nolan as far away as possible.

LMAO. So FOX is Trying to emulate what Marvel Studios is doin? Smh. Cause i think they're well aware how the fans want the Marvel properties back where they belong, especially with how successful the MCU is. So this is there way of saving face. Epic Fail!
