THE WOLVERINE Producer Hutch Parker On What's Needed To Make Another Movie

The Wolverine producer Hutch Parker shares his thoughts on the possibility of a third solo film starring the most popular X-Men character, saying that there's "absolutely" room for more stories and that the right one is what would justify another movie.

Hugh Jackman will not only be returning as The Wolverine later this summer, but will also reprise the iconic role in next year's X-Men: Days Of Future Past (the latter of which will be his seventh time playing Wolverine). Currently, he isn't signed on for any more outings as the clawed mutant, which makes some wonder if he will return as Logan yet again. Speaking with Screen Rant, producer Hutch Parker says that there is "absolutely" more room for storytelling despite The Wolverine being a stand-alone film, and he says the biggest obligation for a third solo film starring Wolverine will need the right story (of course) to be developed.

"This is a standalone piece. You guys know the story, it lives really neatly off by itself and doesn’t preclude anything else. It doesn’t preclude reconnecting. It doesn’t preclude other standalone stories. I think part of what makes Wolverine such an iconic character is that it’s an irresolvable conflict. His immortality and the emotional conflicts he has surrounding those issues are limitless in terms of where that character can go and where they would live and become an issue and engage so that, I think you’ve got – To Tom [Rothman]‘s credit, to Bill Mechanic’s credit – this is a well that can be mined for a long time. I think the challenge will be the obligation on the part of the filmmakers and the studio to make sure the stories are worthy of going back to the well. Certainly, Hugh’s been a good sport about it over the years he’s done this character. He clearly loves it to death but I do know that it becomes a storytelling obligation to make sure that this one will be a hard one to top, so that we can continue to serve up opportunities for him as a performer that warrant ‘yes, I want to put the claws back on and grow out my mutton chops and do my thing.’"

Of course, Fox will likely make many more X-Men movies in the future, and with Wolverine as the franchise's flagship character, they'll likely want to continue using him as much as possible. Would you like to see yet another solo film starring Wolverine? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Wolverine will claw his way back into theaters July 26th. You can also check out Hugh Jackman in action as Logan in X-Men: Days Of Future Past on July 18th, 2014.

There is so much more you could do with the X-Men franchise. New Mutants(which they said was in development), X-Force, or X-Factor. Hell, even other solo character outings(Cable, Deadpool, and even Gambit)smh.

I wonder if Logan never gets his healing factor back and becomes the Ultimate Cable in Days of Future Past.

Thoughts?

yeah, Fox needs to keep making movies to keep the rights. And they'll do it even if they have to replace Hugh.

If they do another Wolverine story they should take him to Madripoor and crack some heads down there!

Too bad they have the license set up that they have; I would love to see Wolverine team up with SHIELD

idk how long hugh really wants to be wolverine(i hope he does it for the rest of his life lol) but its going to get to a point where he physically cant do it. he puts wolverine on such a high pedestal physically and with age its just going to become harder and harder to achieve. if theres gonna be a crossover movie(avengers/xmen) its gotta be with hugh at his prime. so i dont want to say "they should get it done in the near future" because i believe it should be made when marvel and fox are ready but at the same time idk how long hugh can keep doin this. or any current character really.

I won't say the X-Men movies have bad story or whatever is being said. I just don't enjoy them (aside from First Class). This and DOFP are HBO viewings for me.

I say let them reboot Wolvie and put him in the costume. Let Hugh rest for ten years and then bring him back for Old Man Logan with Mark Ruffalo in on it as well.

I think with Tom Rothman gone, things have or are starting to change at Fox. If anyone remembers or have been paying attention, Fox didn't earn it's bad reputation regarding interfering with films until Rothman took over the studio in the late 90s. He was known for wanting to be directly involved creatively in their films, whereas most studio heads don't explicitly get hands on with their films. He was notorious for altering scripts, mandating their films shoot for a PG-13 rating and re-editing R-rated films in order to get a PG-13 rating, shutting directors out of the editing room, pissing off directors and just generally taking control of productions instead of letting the writers and directors do their job.

Rothman finally resigned last September, much to the delight of film-goers and people around the industry. I believe they're now trying to turn the studio around, in regards to the reputation gained during Rothman's rein.

I think hiring someone from the comics like Mark Millar to have input in their comic book films was one of the first steps. This was announced after Rothman made his resignation. I'm not sure how much of The Wolverine's production was still under Rothman's guidance, but he was gone before Days of Future Past went into production. So, we'll really see how things now work without his involvement. Days of Future Past will be Fox's first comic book film without Rothman at the helm. Should be interesting.

"This is a standalone piece." - really? Cause it looks extremely connected to X-Men 3. "You guys know the story" - Yep, this movie looks NOTHING like the story its based on, other than the fact that Wolverine is in fact in Japan. You will not get my money on this one Fox (paid to see X-Men Origins in the dollar theater, still not worth it).

Yeah, 'Enemy of the State' would be badass. Throw in Omega Red too. He was resurrected by Matsuo and the Hand anyway, so he'd fit right in with the plot.

There's a lot of Wolverine stories that they could adapt to the big screen, but I want other X-Men characters to have their own solo outing.

I want to see Gambit get his own solo movie!!! And not the half-assed one in XMO:Wolverine. A brand new and well adapted Gambit!
